Hey guys, I'm currently in the process of joining the Navy, Heading to Kansas City for MEPS on Monday(19-10-09) and was wondering what all I'm in for in my first few year's as a member of the USN. I'm aiming for Aviation Warfare System's Operator, no real back up plan right now.

Boot camp and your first year or so will be an eye opener to how the Navy really is. It's hard for me to say, because I've gotten past my 1 year point, and I'm still not out in the fleet.

Your bootcamp is just two months of waiting, staying awake, and ******** ******** games. A-school is like high school all over again (at least corpsmen A-school was). But, I've with Marine attachments since, so I haven't been to the real Navy yet.

lol I'm not too worried about the schooling side of any of it. If i can score an A in 2D Video Game design, Dont see any of the stuff the Navy is going to throw at me as something that will really stump me for too long. lol I can remember the day before i dropped my classes, sitting there looking at the 3D game code(2D was first semester, 3D was second), and thinking "... I think I would rather go in to the armed forces." lol

... and soon you'll be saying, "I should've stuck to videogame programing..." Nah, it's not too bad once you get over all the stupid s**t.

It'd be hard for me to say. Navy schooling is like nothing you've ever seen before. I know for us Nukes, the only people who could be fully prepared for the pace the schooling is at is the people who've been through MIT's Engineering Program. No one at my command went through that.

Sorry I haven't posted, been working on getting old court records and that kind of stuff for the guys at MEPS.
On the bright side, I scored high enough on my ASVAB that i can go in to any job field but the ones involving Nuclear reactor's.
I cant find the sheet with all my scores but i got a 76 overall.

No kidding. You get lost in this lifestyle (and I mean lifestyle. This ain't no job! Pardon the double negative but you get my point), it's weird to go back home, and try and play civilian again. Well, for me it is lol.

Boot camp (from my brother's opinion) is just waiting. He said it was an eye opener for him of how the Navy really is. A-School is something you really want to work hard on. Read a lot about what you study and you should be fine. If you do well, you'll be an E-4 in no time after you deploy... unless you do something to piss off your officers.

There is absolutely no way to tell you. You really aren't mentally equipped to understand until you've done it. The Navy is totally unlike what you're expecting. There are awesome times, and you'll see things you wouldn't have otherwise. There are also crappy times, when the only way you'll get by and keep your sanity is to take a big bite out of your bullsh*t sandwich and comment to everyone how nourishing they are for character. If you're not saying "F*ck the Navy!" after the first year, you're doing it wrong. If you're not saying "I love this crap!" after the first four years, you're doing it wrong.
