It seems like an appropriate time of year to begin to consider the topic of what comes after our current lives, if anything. It is thought by at least a fair number of pagans I have met that the walls between the worlds become thin at Samhain and contact with the other side is more possible.

I know I have incorporated this belief into my previous Samhain celebrations, celebrating those who have left during the previous year, reaching out to them for messages, asking for guidance from the other worlds. Samhain is one of the times for divination, looking forward even as we look at what has gone before.

..............................................
There are two main currents of thought I follow, and strange enough, I'm sure they are not so contrary:

1. Death is a door to a diferent existance, one where we'll be less conscious of ourselves, and more of our surroundings. We'll be like forces of nature, doing a diferent job for the God and Goddess.

2. We come back. I do believe in reincarnation, but I see it as a stage. The way I see it, when we die, our souls are somehow measured, wheighted. The weight, is our knowledge. If we still have things left to learn, we'll come back and have a diferent try at this life, where we might find more wisdom. If our souls are ready, we'll pass to the other side, where we'll fuse with the mother, and be a part of her, as part of her helpers.

I find your views compatible with my own. In keeping with my belief that all Gods and Goddesses exist, however, there are options to existence after going through the door of Death, choices to be made.
I, too, believe that our hearts are weighed and our wisdom assessed. We cannot step off the Wheel too soon. A close acquaintance, who is now gone, had a prophetic moment when she said she was tired and was thinking it was time to take her rest in the Summerlands. She was definitely an Old Soul.

I am reminded of this thread, having attended the funeral rites for my aunt yesterday. This lady was held dear in my heart, though at a distance, because of things that happened when we were all much younger. Anyway, she had a stroke 12 years ago, when in her early sixties, and quickly descended into Alzheimer's dementia. I really have to wonder about those folk whose souls wander away while the body lives on. Perhaps the string that connects their spirit to the corporeal somehow gets severed and they cannot come back? Perhaps they inadvertantly get too close to the door, become enthralled in the dream state, and go into a stasis. Maybe they go on a journey on another plane of existence.

I wonder.
