Hello everyone. I'm in need of some assistance. I have been given an assignment in my English class where i have to write about the sterotypes that Buddhists face. But, since im not Buddhist, this has been sligtly difficult since Google has failed me. Could anyone here be willing to share some common misconceptions and sterotypes that your religion faces, or share a link that gives said information? If so, i would be much appreciative.

One thing that I run into constantly is that people seem to think that Buddhists worship the Buddha like a god, which we dont. The Buddha was just a person like anyone else. heart 4laugh

where i live, people all think that if you are buddhist, you are:
1. a bald man living in the mountains 2. vegetarian 3. you wear the traditional robes
so it can be hard to say i am buddhist when i dont fit any of those stereotypes.

I might be a bald man wandering in the mountains. Eventually. Lifetimes later. Or I might've already been. Well, my karmatic continuitiy might have been, anyway. If it was, it was a bad monk, considering I'm back in a lay follower state now. xd
I get a lot of questions about how I can be Buddhist when I'm whiter than wonderbread and was born and raised in Canada, nowhere near a temple, in a Roman Catholic community. I tend to just reply with "It takes all types", and smile. 3nodding

The stereotypes I am aware of for Buddhists are. .
Is a monk. Any form of media/electronics is considered a luxury and thus not used/accepted. Vegetarian.
So basically repeating what Raven said + the luxury misconception. I've seen monks with computers in their rooms before. Mostly its to keep contact with the other monks via email or translate their books into English for those that can't read the original texts.

Alot of people believe Buddhism immediately means you are a pasifist and won't stand up for yourself. I found Buddhism in the Military and used it to calm my nerves in the extreme situations but just because you are peaceful it doesn't mean you allow others to walk all over you.

My fiance thinks that if I follow Buddhism I will have no ambition to do anything.
Because you know, Buddhists just walk around, they don't actually do anything of their own volition. >.>

卍 The quieter you become, the more you can hear. I got this little bit of ignorance from my cousin: "Doesn't that symbol in your wallpaper [卍] make you a Nazi?" (Paraphrased). I sighed and told her what it meant. My mom also did the whole hold your hands to the sides with the middle finger and thumb touching while humming stereotype when I told her I was following Buddhism. I had to tell her that not all Buddhists do that. I know Zen doesn't, at least. May you attain enlightenment. 卍

I had to tell her that not all Buddhists do that. I know Zen doesn't, at least. I'm more a hands in the middle, palms up and thumbs touching person, but I know people who rest palms down on knees and one who only meditates while walking because the sitting puts him to sleep. None of us hum. xd
