"Silence finds distance And the distance will see us falter Violent condition Of a heart that always shames love."
In a world where material worth is valued above all other traits a social caste system has formed that has forced the lowest caste into slavery and made it near impossible for them to gain freedom. The government is controlled by an elite group of aristocrats known as the Nobles, and the Judges exist solely to keep true anarchy from taking hold.
Emmer Dartey is a naive, talkative, and blunt socialite; a black sheep amidst the whispered lies and well kept secrets of the noble class. His only saving grace is his older sister Charlotte's protection and advice. All that changes, however, when he meets and became intrigued by a strange young pleasure slave named Jade.
Jade is, as his name implies, completely jaded to the world around him. Mute by his training and his will, Jade witnesses the world around him but refuses to let it touch him. He refuses to let anyone get close to him... despite how much Emmer may try.
A simple mistake made by Emmer, however, has devastating consequences for Jade, who finds all his carefully created walls crumbling around him and his tentative relationship with Emmer destroyed.
Eight years later, Emmer thought he'd moved on and forgotten the mistakes in his past, but mistakes have a way of finding their way back. When the two meet again unexpectedly, Emmer has the chance right all the wrongs and reunite a family that never should have been torn apart in the first place.
But Jade may not be so ready to forgive...
All that's said, all that's left unsaid, and all the things that never should have been said. Some truths are better left unspoken.
"Just say that it's over all we've become Just say that it's time to lessen the sum To tear down a bridge and build a divide Erase all the memories drawn inside."
"Just Say It" by Sleepthief

In coding, we'd say bad_movie != bad_music (bad movie does not equal bad music), so that's why it's there. Plus, "Decode" pretty accurately explains Emmer and Jade's relationship with each other. It almost replaced "Just Say It" as the image song for Unspoken, but "Just Say It" is a much better breakup song. XD **Not available anywhere online, but if you like harp music or new age, you should buy the song. I'll try to upload a sample if I can. Anyway, it's on there because one of the characters plays the harp (it's either Shell or Rose, but I can't remember off the top of my head. I think it's Shell). Also, listening to David Micheal reminds me of my home, because, believe it or not, my family's home is less than a mile from the Keystone Passage. Close enough that I used to wake up to the sound of the Ferry's Fog horns. sweatdrop *** Leala's theme! From the translation: Don't cry, little girl, don't cry anymore // Someday you'll know // Life always has a reason // And even sadness is worth something // What puts tears on your face // Is the kindness in your heart // And a girl who knows this kindness // Will be a most beautiful, beautiful woman This is the vocal version of one of the best songs from Final Fantasy VI, "Kids Run Through City Streets". The lyrics very closely match the journey that Leala takes in coming to accept the mistakes of her parents, and realizing that she is loved, no matter what the circumstances surrounding her birth were like. More soon. You can tell I like the Enya sounding stuff...

Introduction Table of Contents Bonus Features Misc Setting"Unspoken" takes place in a society that is on the same technological level as our own, complete with automobiles, aircraft, and mobile phones. Culturally, the society is built of three rigid castes, with a looser class system interwoven. At the bottom are slaves, who fill a variety roles from menial laborers to researchers, but who are essentially cheap labor. Next is the middle class, who make up the majority of the working population. The highest class, the lawmakers and rulers, are called the Nobles. They are the executive businessmen, the governors, and the judges. There is no gender bias, so men and women make up equal parts of the ruling body, which is primarily clan-based where a parent's occupation has a large influence on the child's. However, parentage is considered less important than sponsorship, and since it is not an uncommon practice for one parent to take sole guardianship of a child, cross caste relationships do frequently occur in secret and result in . Modesty is a valued trait, as it shows that one is intelligent as well as cunning. Nobles rarely wear jewelry for this reason, as more subtle displays of wealth are seen as more tasteful and fashionable. The nobles know they are wealthy; it is intelligence with that wealth that determines a noble's cunning. I'll add more on setting and culture later. Main CharactersJade: A beautiful but mute Companion (personal slave). He does not trust the world and lets very few people get close to his heart. Once, when he was younger, he allowed Emmer to get close to him, but when Emmer made a mistake that cost Jade his one chance at a comfortable life, Jade vowed never to let another person that close to him again. Jade is the Amber's brother, Leala's father, and paramour to Saffron, Rose, and Shell. Emmer: A brilliant businessman and a member of the ruling noble class. As a young man, he was no good at the political intrigue that is the norm amidst nobility. He is intelligent, but quick to miss small details, which is what caused him to make the mistake that destroyed Jade's life. Emmer is Charlotte's brother, Leala's uncle, and the son of Grace and William. Charlotte: A prominent and promising Advocate (lawmaker/lawyer person) and a member of the ruling noble class. She is quick witted favoring logic over emotions, and has no desire for romance in her life. As such, she has chosen not to disclose who the fathers of her two children are. Charlotte, however, is a kind and compassionate person with a lively sense of humor. She is the daughter of Grace and William, older sister to Emmer, and mother of Leala and Ivan. Amber: A too-smart-for-her-own-good Bot (academically based slave). As a child, illness left her disfigured and ruined for work as a Companion, so she was hastily retrained as a Bot. She is shy and quiet, with a strong sense of justice and a peacekeeping attitude. She is Jade's twin sister, the former paramour of Carmine and Dove, and current paramour of Katty and Lee. Leala: The daughter of Charlotte and Jade, and a member of the ruling noble class. She is mild-tempered but inquisitive, and is fascinated with stories about faraway places she has never seen. Leala does not know anything about her father except that he was of a lower class, which is why he isn't able to be part of her life. Still, she wishes she could meet him at least once. Leala lives with her mother, grandmother, uncle, younger brother, and her attendant Dove. Minor Characterswill be done eventually.

Hooray, Readership! Prologue up! Follow the ToC link or this link here. Unspoken Prologue “I'm worried about you.” She said, twining one of my ringlets around her fingers. She liked to play with my hair, because hers was so short. A Bot had no need of beauty as a Companion did, so Amber's pale hair was cropped short, with messy locks framing a scarred face. It was the scarring that ruined her face for training as Companion. She smiled, though, and a shadow of her former beauty shined through. “Maybe I'm just being the overprotective big sister, but I'm honestly worried for you. Nobles are a nightmare, and you'll be intimately involved in their conflicts.” I wanted to communicate to her that I would be fine. We were trained to deal with Nobles and their politics. I was more concerned about how kind my master would be. I thought that maybe I could deal with a harsh one-- one who would treat me unfairly and punish me for the smallest reasons. We'd been trained to potentially deal with that. But I wanted a kind one. I wanted. That, in and of itself, was important.

Yay! Thanks. You can also leave a review here, if it's easier. :3 Chapter One up! Check ToC or click me!!! Unspoken Chapter One “I was asking if the rumors were true about you not having a Companion. Are you simply uninterested?” The younger man shook his head. “It is true that I have no Companion. I've found that Companions are not nearly as trustworthy as everyone thinks. In fact, I have decided that I simply cannot take the risk of keeping one at my side, especially not when I am so newly into the world of politics. However, I would most definitely not describe myself as uninterested.” “Excellent! Then I'm sure you'll find this club to be of interest. Decadence is truly one of the finer establishments in the area. All the slaves here have received some training as Companions, and a few are so well trained that you won't even know the difference. Please, as my gift to you, you should indulge yourself in one of the slaves.” Lockheart pulled his slave against his chest for emphasis, the girl curling around him like a luxurious and spoiled cat. “How do your tastes run, in that case?” “I'd prefer a male, smaller than me. I must say, I never knew such a place existed in the Northern District.”

Chapter 2 is not finished yet, but I figured I'd go ahead and post an excerpt from what I do have written. Current Word Count: 7,172 (Not bad for a super busy Monday!) Unspoken Chapter Two Charlotte minimized the game screen and pulled up the file containing Lilya's proposal. She glanced over the title, Concerning the Legal Age of Consent for Tier One Minors. A fancy title for a relatively simple and important idea; to raise the age of consent for slaves and enforce harsher penalties on those who broke that law. “I'm sorry Lilya, but I have to reject the proposal. It will never hold up in the Court of Lords.” There was silence on the other end of the line. Finally, Lilya sighed. “I see. I suppose I was wrong to get my hopes up. May I ask why, in particular, you have decided to reject the proposition?” A click, she pulled up her email system. No new mail. Charlotte minimized the screen. Then, she said, “I understand where you are coming from, and on a personal level, I would like to say that yes, your proposition to raise the age of consent from fourteen to eighteen for slaves is an admirable goal, one that should be passed, but I cannot see it being terribly popular among the nobles who keep Companions. It would drastically reduce their functionality and increase the cost of training them.” “I see your point, Charlotte, but this is about more than money. Have you seen the conditions of these training centers?” “Lilya, please.” Open the inbox window, check messages. None. She switched over to the proposal, before deciding it was too depressing and closing the window again. “This is not Kokia. The conditions of the training centers have absolutely no bearing on this matter. If you can't present a logical reason on how raising the age of consent for Tier Ones would benefit the Nobles, then I cannot give it my support.” “Tch. I don't suppose I will ever understand the way you alientes think. It is not a matter of money.” I really need to come up with a name for the country this story takes place in...

Didn't get as much written today as I was expecting. I spent a good three hours of my free time trying to revise my Resume so I can go to a career fair tomorrow. College sucks, then you have to apply for an internship. I asked my boss why I can't just intern as a teacher (since I'm already a student teacher, why not?) and she just laughed at me. (We can't all have internships a NASA, you know!) But anyway, that's the real reason Chapter Two is taking so long to be finished. Depending on how the fair and my hunt for a job goes, I may finish the chapter and post it tomorrow. For the time being, have another excerpt! Unspoken Chapter Two Charlotte checked her computer clock. 10:30 AM. It was time to feed Ivan. “Come in!” She called, and the door opened to reveal her oldest child, her seven-year-old daughter Leala, dressed in a floral print robe with the sleeves pinned back and her long blond hair tied up into pigtails with pink ribbons in them. Charlotte wondered absently how long that must have taken Dove to do, considering how active of a child Leala was. “Hello Leala. Was there something you needed?” The little girl shook her head, but darted over to Emmer's side anyway, hugging her uncle around the waist. “Noooooo. Shh... I'm hiding from Dove. He doesn't know where I went.” She looked up at the man, blue eyes bright. “Hide me Uncle Emmer!” Emmer chuckled. “I don't know how well I can help you there. Dove's awfully good at finding missing items like toys... homework... books... misbehaving little girls.” He teased. “Speaking of which.” Charlotte interrupted. “Why are you hiding from your caretaker anyway? Aren't you supposed to be going to the park this afternoon?” Leala giggled. “Sure! As soon as he finds me!” Charlotte shook her head. “I will never understand the way you think, Leala.” Leala just giggled. I am literally just paragraphs away from finishing the chapter. I swear! 8,397/50,000 Wish me luck in getting an internship!

Chapter Two up! Sorry it took so long! The next chapter is a very brief (1,500 words or so) interlude into Jade's thoughts regarding the events of Chapter One. It should be up tonight, I think. Unspoken Chapter Two “Good. Glad I'm not the only one. Because I was kind of hoping I wasn't just being paranoid. He didn't even give me any real challenge trying to convince him to offer his assistance on the Noreya Protocol. So... yeah... now I've just spent the last four hours trying to figure out what it is he could possibly want from me so I can decide if it's worth continuing this alliance. Other than that, how was your morning?” “Fine. I guess. I think my girlfriend just broke up with me.” Emmer thought for a moment, wracking his brain to see if he could remember who his sister's current (well, recently current, now) girlfriend was. “You mean the Kokian one? The short dark girl with black hair? You weren't that serious about her anyway.” Charlotte glared at him over the desk, but it didn't hold any heat. “Thank you oh so much for your kind and sympathetic shoulder, Emmer. I should just kick you out of my office now and save myself some trouble. Why, oh why, do I bother putting up with your idiocy?” “Probably because you love me oh so very much.”

Your wish is my command, Catherine! I actually finished this chapter at 2 am last night, and posted it then, but I was too lazy to do the Gaia update. Leala's awesome. She and Dove are two of my favorite characters in this story. I'm glad you thought the chapter was cute. I need to write about 5,000 words today, so chances are good that the next chapter will also be updated today. Unspoken Interlude One Once, a long time ago, there was a man I loved very much. He was the brother of my mistress, and she had no qualms about sharing me with him. I could not tell him that I loved him, even had I the voice to do so, but affection was there between the two of us. He was an interesting man, this man that I loved. He talked too much, and said too much, and his sister always confided to me that there was a great many things she never told him because she knew the whole court would know if she did that. He couldn't keep a secret. I had few interactions with their mother, who was a very high ranking noble as well as the head of the household, but I knew that she worried that her son would never be able to obtain any rank of his own if he could not learn to play the games of the noble court. Yet, to me, this man's conversations filled up long gaps in what had become a silent life for me. I'd lived my younger years during training amidst my sister and her two paramours, who were prone to the sort of vibrant loudness that didn't allow for echoes of silence. I missed the liveliness of that life, but I found the replacement in that man. For hours on end, I would lie beside him and listen to him talk about everything and nothing at all. He told me he loved me, and I believed him because I was sixteen and naïve, and I wanted him to love me so much that it hurt. I never wanted anything more than that.
