For my husband, it's knowledge. For my brother, it's being "right" (Even though he's wrong about almost everything but knowing God's real), for my dad, it's understanding the state of the dead.
For me, it's being able to see God in everything. Like fantasy books, regular fictional movies/books/stories, and stuff like that. It's also God's Grace and knowing He loves us undeserving sinners so much.
Anywho: what brings YOU closer to God? Let's talk.

Every thing in my life brings me closer to God; the trials, the hardships, the blessings, the debates, every thing. I am thankful to my Heavenly Father for the truths He has revealed to me through the Holy Ghost, I am also thankful to Him for His Son and the example that Jesus is in my life.
I am greatful to be Heavenly Father's daughter and I am greatful for the fulness of the Gospel of Christ. I am thankful for my husband and my daughter. They are two of the greatest gifts Heavenly Father has blessed me with.

When I am weak he is strong in me.
Quiet moments to recall his mercies and grace alloted in my life.

I find the enoucragement for my faith a lot in the bible, particularly the gospel. When I can deeper discover God's immense love and mercy. What also helps me are some books on Christianity and the bible; some of them are very helpful for encouragement and inspiration.
I am also inspired by people who have genuine faith and live by it.
Not sure if it's the kind of answer you're looking for.
I have always believed that Christianity is true, except for some periods of crisis and doubt. In those periods, what helped me was reading about how the bible was written and perserved, things that supported its credibility. Because to become devout in religious faith, I first need enough real basis and support for it's validity. Which I believe I have now.

hmmm what brings me closer to God is his over all compassion for me .. no matter how i have fallen he takes me back its incredible.. Besides that i comfort in knowing he want's to know me personally instead of just rule over me (which by they way i have no problem with). Other than that.. i can't imagine knowing someone so perfect, so humble to put aside the kingdom of heaven and put on our flesh to suffer.... its like a real popular guy has a huge party and he sees all these real nice people having a good time and he notices the loner, the out cast in the corner all alone and takes the time to know him.

Other than that.. i can't imagine knowing someone so perfect, so humble to put aside the kingdom of heaven and put on our flesh to suffer.... its like a real popular guy has a huge party and he sees all these real nice people having a good time and he notices the loner, the out cast in the corner all alone and takes the time to know him. again I'm sorry if i ramble What you said reminds me of the man that was healed of Leprosy. He was not allowed to be around others, was contagious, and had to announce himself so others would flee from his presence. Then one touch from Jesus not only healed him it changed his life he knew his was loved and accepted. Now thats enough to draw you and others closer to GOD, some kind of love. smile
