Prologue
Celes

Prom night. My sister Rose is the only one that ever enjoyed prom…

Oh, right. I should explain a few things, shouldn’t I? Well, first, I’m Celes. Celes Chere. I’m one of three triplets living in the tiny town of Allagash. Never heard of Allagash? Of course you haven’t. It’s a small, insignificant seeming town in Maine. Well, um…anyway…

I’m a normal girl in freshman year at high school. Except for one thing, that was sarcastic. I’m not normal at all. The exact opposite, actually. Allagash is a hideout for people like me, my sisters, and my mom. It also just so happens I’m the most powerful person in the history of the world. Of course, no one knows about my fifth power. If anyone found out…what would they think of me?

Well, other than that, I’m the most normal person on Earth………NOT! In appearance, my triplets and I all have amethyst eyes, although mine have a certain brilliance to them my sisters’ don’t have. And, well my sisters are completely different from me. My hair is long, dark brown, and curly, and I have fragile seeming, pale skin, like a porcelain doll. At night, my skin seems to gleam like moonshine, my eyes seem darker than they really are, and my hair seems even blacker.

Enough about me. Let’s get back to prom night.

Well, our mom knows all about our plans, because she can control time and find out. See, this is where Rose’s and Alice’s problems come in. They try to sneak out and such, Alice being the strange one and Rose the popular one. So, my mom walks into my room while Rose and Alice are behind a mahogany wood screen, getting ready. I was sitting on my bed, coming out my hair, out of boredom, mainly. I don’t go to prom, ever. I never was in love with anyone, and never will be, and I hate dancing with boys. Still, my mom and I usually go do fun things on days like this, so I had on a long white dress, which looked rather delicate and reached just above the floor.

Rose chose that moment to pop out from behind the screen. She wore a knee-length soft blue dress, with a black, short, velveteen jacket that really only covered the fact she had a sleeveless dress on. Her eyes widened when she saw mom standing there, and, scared, she teleported off somewhere, and three seconds later, was back. Thankfully, not dripping wet, but her short, curly, blond hair was all messed up.

“There was a bad windstorm where I went…thankfully, it wasn’t a desert…” Rose said in her soft, but lightly loud, voice.

“Really? I thought you landed in the Arctic Ocean!” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Really? Rose landed in the Arctic Ocean?” and that’s when Alice came out. Her black, shoulder-length hair was casually thrown about her shoulders. She was wearing a really short purple dress, with long black leggings. Thankfully, for her, her dress had short, puffy sleeves. She saw our mother and gulped, and I grinned.

“And just where do you think you two are going?” our mom, Denise, asked. Her short hair was currently at the color of her roots, dark brown, and her milky, almost pink, eyes regarded Rose and Alice.

“Um…” Alice and Rose started, but I answered for them.

“Hmm, let’s see. There are thousands of possible places they could go, but only a few seem likely. Those three choices are the prom, the diner, and the dance club, but I’d say they look too dressed up for dinner and the dance club, so I’d personally guess the prom, not like you need me to tell you that. Of course, for all we don’t know, they could be hitching a ride to Chinatown or something.”

“CELES! Why’d you tell her?” Alice and Rose yelled.

“I was merely thinking out loud, and there really isn’t anything she doesn’t know. So, the real question is, why did I state the obvious? Well, really, I just felt like being mother’s “angelic little daughter” as opposed to “the hellish others”, but that’s just me. Either way, she still knows,” I said, smiling again.

“So, Rose, Alice? Why are you going to the prom?” Denise asked.

“Because I can,” Alice said, followed by Rose’s, “Because I want to.”

And then they teleported away. Well, Rose grabbed a hairbrush first, and then left.

“What kind of things are we going to do while they’re gone, mum?” I asked.

“Well, I thought we could go introduce ourselves to our new neighbors, and then go to the diner or something…” Denise said, and I shrugged.

“I guess we can go visit the neighbors…not what I was thinking of, but why not?” I shrugged again.

So, that’s where we’re starting, now.
