When I think of heaven Deliver me in a black-winged bird I think of flying Down into a sea of pens and feathers And all other instruments Of faith and sex and God in the belly of a black-winged bird. Don't try to feed me 'cause I've been here before And I deserve a little more
I belong in the service of the queen I belong anywhere but in-between She's been crying, I've been thinking And I am the Rain King.

Cloud Whales are notorious shape-shifters, legendary and valued for the rural mountain Ga'lee people. They are said to inhabit the sky and bring good fortune to those with a kind heart who hear their song. Often they are associated with wisdom, happiness, and stability. Their teeth are said to bring wealth and power to any man who wears at least one tooth, though misfortune if the tooth is stolen. Unfortunately, the latter myth has driven many whales into hiding for fear of poachers who would do them harm.
Cloud Whales appear as large, transparent, toothed sperm whales. They maintain some degree of similarities to the Orca, but are primarily square and incredibly large. Their bodies are often tinted a particular color, thus they are visible creatures. They are liquidy to a degree, squishy to the touch, the membrane proving quite thick in protection of internal vitals and skeletons. They are said to generate a heavy wind when moving, which may simply be because of their massive size and the nature of their motion. A Cloud Whale's ability to fly is a matter of scientific fact: they are inflated with gasses in particular pouches that lift them. That does not stop the mythology surrounding them, but they are certainly a biological species and known to exist despite their small numbers.
The level of intellect maintained by the species is debated by those who do not believe in the human-like status of the Cloud Whale, which often leads to various abuses on behalf of those who do not believe they have a brain. Cloud Whales are a secretive race and do not typically unveil themselves in human form to other individuals, perhaps for privacy's sake, perhaps for cultural sakes. They are quite paranoid of danger, and like to blend in with their human peers. They have limited abilities, such as their shape-shifting. Their song is said to generate euphoric and physical feelings of happiness and pleasure, though extensive scientific study has not led to conclusive evidence that this is true for ever individual.

Though Liwanu is born of a Cloud Whale, his association with the species is contaminated for unknown reasons. Unlike his father, Liwanu can not shape-shift into another form, therefore is devoid of the true physical status of a Cloud Whale. An ordinary Cloud Whale does not truly fly, as their 'ground level' is placed in the air due to natural gasses their bodies produce to lift them. In other words, the air is the sea, and the whale have difficulty coming down or going higher than their body's natural limitations. Liwanu, on the other hand, can fly despite not having these natural gasses filling his body (as he can not take that form). He is not held to the boundaries set by a Cloud Whale's biological structure.

Though Lokni is born of a Cloud Whale, his association with the species is contaminated for unknown reasons. Unlike his father, Lokni can not shape-shift into another form, therefore is devoid of the true physicality of a Cloud Whale and its benefits. He can not fly, nor float, nor reach the sky at all in any way other than that of a casual person. Similarly, Lokni differs from his twin in that his serum-brought power is visible and involuntary. A small storm cloud acts as an extension of his mind, following him around wherever he may go. His mood determines the size and weather-outcome of the cloud, though it never shifts from an ominous storm gray.

[ t h e g a ' l e e t r i b e ] T e r r a i n
Mountainous, with sloping valleys. The Ga'lee inhabit the grassy valleys. Rivers weave through the mountains and into a lake; the land is good for agriculture in particular areas.
C u l t u r e
The Ga'lee are very spiritual and naturalistic people. They inhabit the lower regions of the mountains outside of Barton Town, residing on land specifically set aside for their needs. While migratory, they rarely move far from one camp site to another, ten miles being the greatest distance at best. Most moves are for customary or hazard purposes.
They are agricultural, farming crops and caring for livestock amongst their small numbers. As the result, animals are increasingly important to them, particularly those which may offer them materials to construct their clothing and their homes. The Ga'lee do not wear clothing purchased from chain stores, and while they indulge in many of the treats of modern society, on their reservation these items are generally prohibited as it is sacred and 'old'. The elder members of the tribe tend to be far more traditional and like to keep the two worlds separate from one another. Thus, while a member of the Ga'lee tribe may be wearing band t-shirts and bling outside of the reservation, before they set foot back inside, they typically return to cultural garb - which consists of woolen garments, leather garments, garments of soft cloth, and fur. Sheep are especially important to the Ga'lee, being a favored food. Goats are adored in a similar manner. Having originated from the region they possess, mountain goats and sheep were original staples, and as such have enjoyed such status and fine-treatment with the people. They certainly herd and have a number of shepherds to attend their vast flocks. They often hold festivals for their sheep, the notable one being the Yaught-Frow Seam in the Spring. The Ga'lee utilize everything from the bones, teeth, and organs of animals. They are not wasteful and can be quite strict and self-righteous when it comes to utilizing every part of something.
The religion of the Ga'lee could be described as secular. Its broad-based and welcoming without firm definition, and certainly its origins appear more culturally based than in terms of actual belief. The Ga'lee love their folklore, love their fables, and these stories are often told and passed down to young children with the insinuation that once upon a time they were true, though now they may not be as true or as likely to occur. In that respect, it may be said that religion as a whole to the Ga'lee is dead. Once upon a time there was a bringer of magic, and all things were born of this magic in the world; they grew like seeds until they were as they are. They do not believe in an omniscient god so much as an accidental and passive creator, who perished some time long ago as all magic things do and would, for nothing is perfectly immortal. The Ga'lee believe in cycles. Everything cycles through. Life has stages, which often leads to various celebrations for birth, adulthood, marriage, and death. Likewise, the same held true for the bringer of magic, who more or less is a character in a story for the tribe rather than an actual being. They acknowledge this as a story explaining what they do not know, and claim they hold very little interest in the actual origins of anything as no one truly knows anyway.
As an agricultural community, the rain is important to them. A time known as the Ha'lawera was ingrained within their culture early, and, as such, they took a fancy to the Cloud Whales who would fly over head and bring with them sweeping winds that would carry the rain clouds and force the rain to come. It can be said that this is, undoubtedly, the most eventful time of the year for the Ga'lee people.
When children are born a ceremony known as the Tawan'tut is held and children are awarded the names and titles they will carry for much of their young lives. At the age of thirteen, children may attend the Uluk'makotai, or a rite of passage into adulthood, though they must complete several tasks to rightfully call themselves adults and enjoy the full privileges of their adult counterparts.
I m p o r t a n t E v e n t s
* Tawan'Tut - A simple ceremony vested immediately after the birth of an infant into the tribe. It may be described as a celebration in which young children are adorned with titles that will follow them through much of their young lives. It is a cultural custom that the parents of children do not name those children. Rather, the task is rewarded to the central leader and to old customs and family lines. It may be described as a large party simply celebrating new life.
* Uluk'makotai - When young Ga'lee boys and girls have reached a certain age, they are allowed to attend the Uluk'makotai, another celebration of sorts. Similar to a bar mitzvah, the Uluk'makotai is a rite of passage and a series of trials that children must face in order to one day be considered adults in standing with the tribe. Typically the tasks are attributed to occupations and necessities, although a journey up the side of the mountain alone with nothing but a flask of water and a knife is regarded as a traditional portion of the rite to passage, as children must learn to become 'self reliant'.
* Yaught-Frow Seam, Festival of the Sheep - The Ga'lee value their livestock. Mot notably, they value their sheep. Every spring, a festival is held to honor the animal. Sheep are sheered, wool is exchanged, children don masks as songs, food, and festivities fill the air. It is accompanied by a large feast.
* Rombus'Tai Griv, Mourning - When a member of the Ga'lee tribe has passed, the Ga'lee gather and mourn. As a small community of people and very close knit, it is an enormous and somber ordeal. Bodies are cremated and ashes are scattered amongst the fields and dirt, a rock wrapped in fur being buried beneath the ground in the center of the tribe's land. The Ga'lee do not mark the graves of their dead with anything more than a stick that signals where the rocks symbolizing the deaths of their ancestors are buried.
* Ha'lawera, Time of Rain and Wind - When the winds begin to grow strong about the mountains and the rainy season comes, the Ga'lee call the time the Ha'lawera. It is a time for agriculture. The Ga'lee love their rain, and, importantly, they love the wind, for the wind brings the melodious songs of the Cloud Whales who fall its current to the tops of the mountains for their mating season. Similar to the Festival of Sheep, it is a celebration in honor of the winds and rain. A large feast is served, song and dance fills the reservation.
* Jip'hawen - A Jip'hawen is similar to a wedding in that it symbolizes a union between two individuals, be they man and man, woman and woman, or man and woman. It is a simple ceremony and blessing of the central leader acknowledging union between two individuals, and could be called the final rite of passage into a new stage of life.

[ r e e d s i n t h e w i n d ]
Poei The Ga'lee Tribe's central leader. He is an old, unorthodox man who waddles along with a slight hunch backwards to his back. His body is plump and delightful, jolly in nature - and his face may be described as a lighthouse in a horrid storm. He's happy, pleasant, and rather easy going in personality.
Kyte befriended Poei long before becoming one of the resident shepherds, Poei being the only man to truthfully know of Kyte's status as a Cloud Whale (at least within the tribe). After a horrid incident which led to the massacre of a large number of whales during the Ha'lawera, Poei adopted Kyte into the tribe. He is a guardian-figure, if not a stern father.
Ura A second leader to the Ga'lee Tribe, comparable to a vice president minus the election. Ura is an old childhood rival of Poei's, or rather his older sister. While generally calm and bearable, she easily proves herself a snake in the grass and somewhat more traditional than her younger brother.
Miae A young woman who behaves as a teacher and babysitter for many of the parents in the tribe. Kyte met Miae when she was nothing more than a small girl dragging along toys and pleading he let her tend to the sheep. He himself was no older than twelve years when he met her, Miae having been nine. From those days of childhood, there exists a connection of mild respect and tacit friendship. Miae often scolds Kyte for being lax and withdrawn; she's often the sort who offers up her advice even when it was never requested. She's nosy, boisterous, and hard-headed. Known as the girl who loves crows, she often feeds them in their gathering places.
