In your humble opinion, how long do you think it should take (at a minimum) to reach 1st Black?
I feel that for someone with no martial arts experience, it should take a minimum of 4 years, depending on the system and how hard one trains. In my art, Tracy's Kenpo, they say 5-7 years to 1st Black, but I think the average is around 5 years. There's quite a bit of material to learn.

I think it largely depends on the person and the art in question. For instance, one can achieve black belt level proficiency in most amalgamated combat martial arts in a couple of years without focusing on them. It took my brother-in-law two very, very intensive years to achieve his TKD black belt.
For a traditional art, if one is training a couple of times a week and their master is taking the time to teach all of the traditions and history of the art, I concur with the 4 year minimum idea.

Is should emphasize that, if one doesn't count the downtime I had finding a new teacher (4 years, far too long!) I managed to attain the L5 black belt of Krav Maga in about three years, consistent with a modern, military-style martial art practiced by someone who trained and tested at every opportunity to do so.

Well, I know a few instructors who won't give black belt unless your a certian age, unless they say differently but I've only seen that once and it hasn't really happened......yet. But yes, I would agree that at least 4 years would be a good time.
