In your humble opinion, how long do you think it should take (at a minimum) to reach 1st Black?

I feel that for someone with no martial arts experience, it should take a minimum of 4 years, depending on the system and how hard one trains. In my art, Tracy's Kenpo, they say 5-7 years to 1st Black, but I think the average is around 5 years. There's quite a bit of material to learn.

In Brazilian Jujitsu, it usually takes 7-9 years to get a black belt.

It took me 4 yrs to get my shodan in goju, and i feel that is a reasonable amount of time.

we don't use belts. being alive is your reward wink
(i know this doesn't really help you)

i think taequando is about 4 years and as someone allready said BJJ is 7 or 8.

however unless your training under a real micky mouse instructor this will obvously depend on you abilaty.

I have to say that it takes as long as your instructor thinks it will take you. Time is not a matter when you can learn so much. I know this doesn't help much, but I think that how long it takes to get to black belt is not a matter, then the path that was taken to get to that rank. Going to black belt, everyone should learn that there are reasons to why we get promoted at the times we do. Whether it be because we are not ready to advance or because we haven't gotten to be the rank we are isn't the issue. Rather, what we do as martial artists about that. If you really need a time....I can't give you one simply because it varies from person to person....
