What has been the most influential book on your practice?
The Kalevala, by Elias Lönnrot. Without it, I probably wouldn't be on this path. Actually, without it I might not even know about this path, so despite the fact that it can be inaccurate and somewhat misleading when it comes to religion, it's still one of the most important (if not the most important) book considering Finnish recon.

Is there any book you wish you'd never read?
Not really, at least I can't think of one.

What would you include in a book?
That's a difficult question. I guess it would depend completely on what kind of a book it's supposed to be, and what would be useful for its purpose...

What do you use from books?
Information. What they can tell about gods, lore, how things work and so on. Whatever is useful will probably be put to use.

1. It was the first Neo-Pagan book I've ever read. I never read Silver Ravenwolf or Buckland or Scott Cunningham or DJ Conway. It had a lot of information on the different religions within paganism.
2. I haven't really picked up any other neo-pagan books. I'm going to try and finish reading the two I got from the library on Saturday, today. I'll post my feelings about them later.
3. I like to learn and research all of the mythos really. I don't have a specific one to be honest.
4. In the book I got Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Centered Religions, there are a lot of writing exercises. Sort of to gain understanding on somethings I suppose.
5. Correct, accurate information on the different subjects, like Wicca.

It seems that all the traditions of witchcraft have slightly different mythos, though I wont learn the core mythos of the Temple Tradition till my second degree.

So most books on the market are out then as they motly have inaccurate information. Though I am learning that some of the books (like the Temple book series) have more to them that is not available to the public.

Not really. There are some books I wish I had read in a different order.

Ethics, history, interviews, discussions about value, truth, real, and metaphor, a lexicon, commentary on the roots of older practices and superstitions, and art projects.

What do you use from books?
Stuff that feels right. For example, I think some of the ideas for sympathetic magic in some modern fiction makes a lot of sense.

Not really. There are some books I wish I had read in a different order.
I agree. Every book I have read has helped me in some way shape or form.

Actually, without it I might not even know about this path, so despite the fact that it can be inaccurate and somewhat misleading when it comes to religion, it's still one of the most important (if not the most important) book considering Finnish recon.
I've always wanted to read that. I've seen the Kalevala listed as a type of Nordic mythology. Would you consider the Kalevala to be a type of Nordic mythology (if we include Finland as part of the greater Germanic ways)?

Arrowlake Riddler

Not really, at least I can't think of one.
Is there much out there on your path?

Arrowlake Riddler

That's a difficult question. I guess it would depend completely on what kind of a book it's supposed to be, and what would be useful for its purpose...
Say the book was meant to be about your path. If you were writing a book for someone who had no idea what Finnish witchcraft and finnish recon is like. What would you include?

Arrowlake Riddler

Information. What they can tell about gods, lore, how things work and so on. Whatever is useful will probably be put to use.
Same here. Hell I'll try most anything I read in the books. I figure if an author put the exercise in the book there is a damn good reason for it.

Personally I wouldn't include it in Nordic mythology. I've never seen it listed that way, and if I remember correctly, Finnish mythology and folklore is more closer to Russian than Nordic myths anyway.

Not so much. It's pretty difficult to find anything, but most of what you can find seems to be quite useful.

Well, I'd probably include things like some history, introduction to myths, gods, how things work in practice and everyday life and so on, what it used to be and how it can work now. If it was meant for someone who knew nothing about the subject, I probably wouldn't go too much into the witchcraft part, perhaps just give a short explanation on that (because witchcraft can be an important part of it all sometimes), but I'd concentrate more on the history and folklore. Those should give a nice understanding of the basics, and could go further from there.

What has been the most influential book on your practice? Magical Herbalism by Cunningham holds a place close to my heart as it was the first pagan book I ever read, thus my introduction to the whole concept. Other than that I don’t know as I was influenced more by any one book than another. Hedge Witch by Rae Beth, Crones Book of Spells by Valarie Worth, Sorgitzak: Old Forest Craft by Veronica Cummer and Nature Speak by Ted Andrews are all favorites and ones I find myself rereading.

Is there any book you wish you'd never read? Mind Light by Silver Ravenwolf and Witta by Edain McCoy. Both were factually unfounded and misleading.

What would you include in a book? I would include a section on what the signs of a magical hangover are and explain that that is why it is important to ground and center before and after magical workings. I would also include the importance of knowing one’s self, understanding and recognizing what you as an individual associate with this concept or that. I would also stress the importance of knowing the biology, botany, geology and spirit of the area where you live, and connecting with that.

What do you use from books? It depends on the book honestly. Some I use recipes, others I use concepts or ideas regarding simplifying or improving an area of practice, sometimes I am simply inspired to be more involved or more active or to rethink and refresh an element of my practice.

There is a book called Norse mythology: Talkes from the Kaleva (sp?)

I haven't heard of that book myself, so I can't really comment on what I think about it... Though I still disagree with the idea of Finnish mythology being Norse. There are similarities of course, and other things that might explain the connection. For example, there are historical Finnish documents that were written in Swedish (Swedish was normally used for all official papers) and those writings have often replaced the names of the Finnish gods with those of the Norse. They mention the Finnish name but "translate" it to Norse, so some used to think they really are the same, despite the differences in the myths...

But personally the only clear connection to Norse mythology that I can see would be the thunder god Ukko in Finnish myths. He's often said to be the same as Thor is, and he probably is, or at least is somehow based on the idea of Thor. He was added to Finnish mythology quite a bit later, so wherever he came from, he wasn't originally part of the Finnish myths...

Quote:
Do you think there is any cross over?

Might be. It's hard to say for sure, because I'm not very familiar with those myths, but I do remember books and scholars mentioning some sort of connection... I really should read more about that subject...
