So, here they were. Home. He'd got a few odd looks, and a lot of friendly greetings. News that he was back seemed to be rushing away ahead of him, but Diego saw no need to chase it. He knew what was being said anyway, the ripples that mention of his name caused in his mind were strong. Mostly people were glad he was back, that the hunt was over. Some were less pleased, had been hoping never to see him again. Well, you couldn't be universally beloved he supposed.
He had yet to mention to any of the people he'd seen that he was now a mystical, magical sort; he wanted Bastet to be the first to know that. He didn't hold out much hope that it would avert her wrath, but it might calm her a little to know he'd told her first. A little ego stroking could do amazing things.
Smiling faintly to himself, Diego turned to his companion. "The whole area is buzzing," he told the Bae, "so many minds turned onto me... There's a few thinking about you too; some people remember you, and fondly. The ones who are thinking of you are glad you're back, they liked your singing." It was nice to be able to pass than news on to the shy Bae, perhaps knowing he was well liked would help his confidence a little. It was worth hoping for, certainly.

Lyric followed closely behind Diego, his eyes moving back and forth between all the onlookers he saw. It had been quite a while since he had been around so many other Nequus, in fact, it had been since the last time he was here. He noticed that Diego was sightly unnerved, but when the Jala turned and told him those things Lyric gave a soft smile, and in returned smiled at a few of them that had been gazing upon him. "I- umm... than-thank you." He whispered softly back, he hadn't wanted his comment heard by those watching them. Still however, as he gazed around he hadn't seen Bastet. He hoped Bastet wouldn't be angry, perhaps he could help Diego in that way, to still the Jala a little in Diego's honor. At least he hoped.

He hoped she wasn't angry either, but didn't hold out much hope. Still, he could deal with her temper, he was used to it by now. He just hoped that she didn't flare up so much that she frightened Lyric; the Bae was jittery enough as it was. "Here," Diego came to a halt under a shady tree, just on the bank of a stream. "This is our usual meeting spot," he explained, "as soon as news reaches her I'm sure she'll come rushing to see me." And to kick his backside. Ah well...
She was coming. He recognized her voice from among the masses easily. As he had expected, at first it was relieved, and then it was about as happy as a Rit that had just had its fur covered in mud and its tail trodden on. "Well, here comes trouble," he murmured. She must have been closer than he'd realized for no sooner had he spoken, he spotted her racing towards him from a nearby copse. Diego was back, and in one piece. He was not going to stay that way for very long. She could see him standing there by the tree looking all sleek and smug... Oh! That Bae, what was his name again? Lyric, of course. Spotting the friendly stallion cooled her ire a little, and the striped mare slowed to a trot as she drew near to them.
"Lyric," she smiled at the little bard, "good to see you again! And who's this stranger you've brought with you?" she went on, turning to Diego, smile fading to a dark scowl. "I'm not sure I recognize him, but he looks a bit like my no good mate who ran off without a word some time ago."

Lyric had stayed where he had been told, waiting until he heard Bastet's voice, a small smile on his maul until she appeared looking rather peeved. He smiled, but it was rather weak. "I.. f-found him in Yisiiii... He- well... uhhh..." He wanted to stand up for Diego but he felt useless at this moment. He supposed the fight was between the two of them and he really had nothing to do with it, Diego had his reasons, but Lyric was completely sure of them and to get in the middle could cause more problems than help, couldn't it have? But what kind of a friend would he be if he let Diego get the brunt of Bastet's fury without at least trying to cool her down?
"Noowww.. I-I'm surre he hasss his reaons." He nodded, trying to at least muster up the point of defending. "Bessidesss... aren't you-you g-glad he's home?" He eyed Bastet with an expectation of her answer.

"Yea," Bastet allowed reluctantly, choosing to keep looking at Lyric rather than Diego, "I'm glad he's back. His daughters have missed him, and everything's been in chaos since he vanished... Whatever his reasons," she turned to glower at the golden stallion, "well they'd just better be pretty good reasons, that's all." She'd missed him too, and been worried. She might not love him in the romantic sense but she loved him as a friend, and their children made them inescapably connected. Why had he left? The urge to kick him until he squealed was almost overwhelming, but she didn't want to upset Lyric a show of violence. If Diego had reasons, let him explain them.
Diego shot a grateful smile at Lyric, feeling pretty sure that he'd be being attacked right now if the Bae wasn't around. This hunch didn't come because he was reading Bastet's mind - he was avoiding that for now - but because he just happened to know her pretty well after all this time.
"I had very good reasons," he replied eventually, he told his mate calmly. "I wouldn't have run out on my duties and my family over something trivial." Unlike her. Did she even remember how she'd run away when they'd first been betrothed? There hadn't been foal involved back then, but that wasn't the point. The point was that when she'd returned he'd allowed her to explain herself without snapping, and even though her reasons had turned out to be stupid and selfish he hadn't questioned her. That was Bastet though, self-righteous to the end.
"I thought I was going mad," he continued when the striped mare gave an impatient snort, "I didn't want to disgrace our herd... Anyway though, Lyric is going to be staying here with us for a while, we must introduce him to the girls." If she was going to be huffy, he was going to take his time over explaining. He didn't hold out much hope that it would teach her patience - nothing in life so far has managed that - but he thought he might as well try.

Lyric mused as he listened to the two. He shook his head back and forth and let out a reluctant sigh, though he tried his best to keep it to himself. He didn't need to add more on to their troubles. He continued to sit quietly to let them work out their problems, a little disgruntled that Diego didn't at least try to explain himself more, until he heard the statement about him meeting the girls. To that he couldn't help but smile a little, nodding his head in enthusiasm. "I.. wo-would love to meeeet themm."

A more pleasant subject, good, she was just about ready to kick Diego for being mysterious. Going mad? Well he seemed fine now, and she wasn't going to be bated into asking for more details, let the drek tell her when he felt like it. "Their named are Sabina and Alejandra," she said with a smile to lyric, turning her back on her mate pointedly. "I'm sure you'll get on with them. Alejandra's full of energy and optimism, and Sabina's a sweet girl if a bit obsessive about dirt. They both love stories and songs like all foals do, so I bet they'll attatch themslves to you in now time!" It would be nice for them to be told stories by somebody who was actually good at it, she'd never had the knack herself...
Drek. She really wanted to know the rest of Diego's story. Ears flicking in annoyance, she turned back to the golden Jala and scowled at him. "Have anything more to say for yourself?" she demanded through gritted teeth. He was better at stories than she was, the girls had kept asking for him while he'd been away and all she'd been able to say was that trie would be back soon. She hadn't known that, and she was pretty sure they they had both been aware of that. They'd all been so scared for him, and now here he was being flippant. Golden Diego, always had to be the wittiest, always had to have people hanging on his every word. Gids but she wanted to kick his pretty face in.
Diego allowed himself to relax a little as his mate spoke to Lyric, and to drink in the familiar sights and smells of home. Yes, he had missed this place, and his girls, all his children for that matter. The elder ones didn't often visit, but he had gathered from the minds of the populus that Udi, Etain, and Aquila had been searching tirelessly since he disappeared. Yes, he felt bad for them, for worrying everyone, but what else could he have done under the circumstances?
"I have pleanty to say for myself," he repiled calmly as Bastet rounded on him. "Suffice to say, to begin with, that I was mistaken. I wasn't going mad, just developing magic." There, that ought to stop her in her tracks. Smirking a little internally, he felt he deserved a few jabs at the striped mare for the welcome she was giving him, he turned back to Lyric. "I'd like to listen in on your stories if I may," he smiled, "it's been a long time since I heard a good story."

Eh. All this bickering was beginning to get to him. He was going to go mad. A big part of Lyric wanted to run away. Run, far away. The argument was making him remember his mother and his grandfather, and that was the last thing he wanted to be reminded of. So when Diego finally broke the argument, he sighed a breath of relief. "Perhaps..." He stated quietly, deep in thought. "Bbbuuuttt... I'd-I'd rather re-re-re-laxxx firrrrsssttt.... if that's-that's nottt a prob-prob-lemmm." He gave a sheepishly look in their direction. He had lost all will to tell stories now, but maybe he'd get it back over time...
