Let's see if we can come up with at least 101 things to do with a classic European-based fantasy setting that are both original and workable within the tradition. I'll start.
(unless otherwise noted, these ideas are up for grabs)
1) You know "the Ancients?" That long forgotten, sometimes non-human civilization that preceded the people of about a third of all fantasy stories? What if it turned out they were evil? What if they were more evil than whatever threat is currently being delt with?

(Oh, fun idea.)
2) Take the idea of Privateers from the 16-19th centuries and apply it to land battles. I think several groups of bandits sanctioned by a certain kingdom to attack merchants from an enemy kingdom would be an interesting frame for a storyline.

3) Introduce dragons and their logical effects on the economy, politics, etc. It won't be pretty.
(This is harder than I thought it would be!)

SilverSongSword (This is harder than I thought it would be!) (especially if we're the only two posting!) --------------------------------------------------- 4) Maybe this has been done and I just haven't read it yet, but I've always wanted to take a fantasy timeline and put the dawn of some technology in the middle of it. Example: I've seen tons of stuff that makes steam power a part of there world, but how interesting would it be to actually deal with the development of steam power as something that is just newly coming into play, rather than being already established? I guess I'm also thinking of this in a somewhat RP setting, because I've always wanted to set up a persistent character RP and once it's already been rolling for like a year, suddenly pick one or two lucky players and let them discover/invent a new technology and see how that effects the game.

(The Wheel of Time introduced fireworks early on, and one of the main characters has recently made use of gunpowder in a military context for the first time in the series. See? Hard.) 5) Use the old "trial by combat" tradition, in which legal disputes could actually be settled by a sanctioned fight.

SilverSongSword 5) Use the old "trial by combat" tradition, in which legal disputes could actually be settled by a sanctioned fight. Used prolifically in the George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series. (Possibly the best fantasy series I've ever read.) Several times throughout the books guilt and innocence of important characters is decided via a fight between two champions. You're right, this is hard. xp 6) Remove currency. Force an entire organized and civilized medieval economy to operate on the barter system.

7) The un-savior. (Your north star thread made me think of this.)
What if we took the idea of the "chosen one" and turned it on its head. What if there are all these prophesies about a savior. And someone comes along and fulfills them all. But then, at the crucial moment, we find out "oh, s**t, the prophecies were bullshit, you're not special, thanks for playing, please try again." And suddenly the characters have to manage to go on and find a way without their savior.
(Kinda like neo in the first matrix, only we won't take it back later on and say "jk, you really are the chosen one!")

8 ) Correct me if this makes no sense.
Make a "modern" community revolved around magic cultures full of mythical aspects. (Its what I do anyways)

9) Why does it have to be a classical fantasy setting? WHy not set the technology level at something closer to the Renissance (1600s)? Or the Enlightenment (1700s)? It hasn't really been done to my knowledge (yet, if I find a book coming out that's set like this and it doesn't have my name on it as author, i'll find you.).

Samurai7e7 10) Even better, bring something like Call of Cthullu into the mix, give it that "inscrutable terror" aspect? I approve. 11) The old "hero summoned from Earth" plot - only it turns out at the end that there's no way to go home. Then, several years later, people from Earth find a way to enter the Magical Land of Whatever. Let culture shock, divided loyalties and d**k Cheney in league with evil mages ensue.

Dicky Cheney doesn't need to be in league with evil mages.
