Rex Thorne worked missing children but today his intentions were not in investigate a case of a missing child but a new adoption center. He'd received a letter from the place and as was his style he'd driven over intended to check it out and make sure it was on the up and up. Many were fine but some were like the last one where children were in cages being fed some liquidity protein goo that was cheap and barely nutritious enough for dogs.
Regardless of the place's quality he always ended turning down every offer he got. Rex's heart had never been ready to accept another child into his life.
Today was another routine follow up based on the invitation he'd gotten just the day before. As he arrived the the building in question and put his car in park The brunet took a calming breath and prepared to give this place a fair look around. It did no one any good when his judgment was biased.

Inside, the building didn't look like many sets of labs. It wasn't as 'omgclean' as them - not dirty, of course but much more decorated and lived in looking. The main areas weren't necessary for testing or anything, so they could be friend looking and carpeted.
Behind the desk was a young woman, large brown hair and black glasses obscuring her eyes as she wrote some notes. However, a small boy with a hooked beak and blue skin was attempting to sneak out and get into things.
"Heeeeeeeeey. Not for you." she laughed, picking up the toddler. "Silly boy."

Rex paused to watch this, curious to see how the boy reacted, if nothing else the woman seemed to be handling him gently. So far from what he saw the place was nice looking, they'd clearly invested money and time into it.
The small boy gave a soft whine and made grabby hands towards the writing utensils on her desk.
( lol if that isn't meant to be Gus just edit that part out.)

(Don't worry, it is)
Apoxi laughed a bit, bouncing the boy. "no, silly, I need those." she cooed, pulling a pen with a kitty eraser top from a jar on her desk and giving him that. About this time, she noticed Rex. "Oh hi. You here about a letter?" Apoxi inquired, kneeling a bit and shifting the boy - who was almost as big as she was - up to a better position.
"I'm Apoxi and this little troublemaker is Asparagus." she said, turning to snuggle him a bit. Unlike most of the kids there, who minded their own business, Asparagus tended to like leaving his room to investigate things. And as such, Apoxi was fond of him and tended to have to keep him out of trouble.

The fin tailed boy began a very thorough examination of the pen and eraser, very happy to have it even if it wasn't the ones she had been using.
The brunet nodded " I see, yes I received a letter, my name is Rex." Okay so far so good, they were guilty of nothing but unusually names for children. It made the muscular male visibly relax a bit more as he wondered if the boy was hers and what was why she was so nice to him "Did you adopt him?" he asked curiously.
Gus stared over at the strange man then back at Apoxi " Yours?" Did having a name make him hers?

Apoxi blinked. "Huh? Oh, no, Gus's one of the kids up for adoption too. He just happens to be one of the ones who is actually the most social with us." she laughed, patting the boy's head. "Most of the littleuns tend to just stay in their rooms or in the back with the playground and such when they're let outside but he tends to come out and try to get into our stuff so I named him." she explained. "We try to avoid naming the kids so we don't get super attached and so the families can give them a name that suits them and such." it was a sort of odd system but one they worked with.
"Did you want to see the other kids? I need to take Gus back to his room anyway."

" Yes please." He did still need to how the other children were kept.

She carried him towards where the rooms were. They were of reasonable size for children and there was a playroom they could borrow toys from. "We don't give them any permanent possessions besides a few small ones since we don't know if they'd be acceptable in any new homes they're taken to." the woman explained, "They're given meals three times a day, plus if they come out and ask for anything. They're also allowed exercise in the daytime and I take them out for walks sometimes on decent evenings. I can't just let them run around willy nilly though since we don't want any fights if kids can't get along just yet and they are generally picked up for homes in under a week."
Another somewhat awkward and strange system but it worked for them and it wasn't necessarily cruel or unusual. The kids were being treated well and carefully - they weren't just experiments but actual living creatures that the people happened to need to study. And as children who were awaiting their first homes, they had to be a bit careful with them.

"It sounds like you're running a very nice place here" Rex admitted with a small smile " I'm certain the children are happy" and clearly interesting and adjusted enough to be taken so quickly by people who saw them it tugged at his heart and yet.. did he really have room for another child in his life with his daughter still forever lost to him?
"Very happy" Gus piped up, he was happy here with all the things to see and look at even if his natural desire to collect things was a bit stifled at the moment.

Apoxi pat the boy's head. "This is one of our more social cases. Most of the others don't talk to me much - I think it's cause they're scared of Kayen or of my hair, personally." the woman laughed. "Care to hold him?" she offered to REx.

The man nodded, "sure" Asparagus didn't look too intimidating though a bite from him could probably break a finger.

Apoxi held the boy out and let Gus crawl into Rex's arms. "He's a sweetiepie. Waaaaaaaay more curious than is good for him in a place like this though. He wants to keep all sorts of stuff but we can't give it up."

Rex was about to reply when the blue skinned boy began to rummage around in his coat pockets as if his hands belonged there. It seemed so innocent though that he couldn't help but laugh even when the horned child pulled a package of gum out and held it to his chest. The werewolf couldn't bring himself to try and take such a small thing away from him.
" Can I ask what exactly he is?" This was dangerous territory he was getting emotionally invested in a child he'd barely met. Still the officer couldn't help but be curious.

Gus paid little attention to the adults brief discussion more focused on trying to get a piece of gum out of the wrapper. "Can I keep him?" The man was nice and curious .. like him.
Rex's gaze shifted between the woman and the child, interesting and now he was being.. requested. It felt strange but heartwarming to be being adopted in a sense and no part of the man could deny a child that was consciously asking for him. " I have no problems with it" he replied quietly.
