Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade’s worth of proof that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.

PETA’s “Animal Record” report for 2008, filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, shows that the animal rights group killed 95 percent of the dogs and cats in its care last year. During all of 2008, PETA found adoptive homes for just seven pets.

Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. PETA just broke its own record.

Why would an animal rights group secretly kill animals at its headquarters? PETA’s continued silence on the matter makes it hard to say for sure. But from a cost-saving standpoint, PETA’s hypocrisy isn’t difficult to understand: Killing adoptable cats and dogs – and storing the bodies in a walk-in freezer until they can be cremated – requires far less money and effort than caring for the pets until they are adopted.

PETA has a $32 million annual budget. But instead of investing in the lives of the thousands of flesh and blood creatures in its care, the group spends millions on media campaigns telling Americans that eating meat, drinking milk, fishing, hunting, wearing leather shoes, and benefiting from medical research performed on lab rats are all “unethical.”

The bottom line: PETA’s leaders care more about cutting into their advertising budget than finding homes for the nearly six pets they kill on average, every single day.

The Virginia Beach SPCA, just down the road from PETA’s Norfolk headquarters, manages to adopt out the vast majority of the animals in its care. And it does it on a shoestring budget.

Years of public outrage has not been enough to convince PETA to eliminate its pet eradication program.

Now the death toll of animals in PETA’s care has reached 21,339, including more than 2,000 pets last year. That’s not an animal charity. It’s a slaughterhouse.

PETA is a bit extreme. I mean I love animals and I don't want them tortured and such, but PETA is like....too extreme O.o

I know it's very popular to hate on PETA, but in all honesty most people who go veg*an do it in part because of the work and information PETA has put out there. PETA has exposed alot of the evils that go on in the meat industry, along with the fashion industry, pet food industry, and all the big corporations out there that still test on animals.

Also, I know a LOT of people aren't willing to see the difference between the way PETA euthanizes animals, and the way your average animal shelter does it. PETA doesn't gas or "heartstick" it's animals....I know it's easy to pay the blame game here, but the fact is that there are MILLIONS of stay animals in this country, and not enough homes for them all, even under the best of circumstances. I mean, how many people do you know that are willing to take in a sick animal that requires constant medical care and thousands of dollars in vet fees?

PETA does euthanize, and nobody likes it. but a humane and painless death is much better than being crammed into a box with a dozen other scared animals and breathing carbon dioxide for 20 minutes.

If anyone would care to actually find out a little bit more about what PETA does, this link is a real eye opener, coming from someone who actually deals with these animals firsthand, and not getting second hand anti-PETA propaganda.

Why We Euthanize - Link!!

Anyway, point is, you don't have to like PETA, but it'd be nice if people actually knew what they were talking about before they started slamming them. They have done SO MUCH in pushing the animal rights issue into the spotlight.

I agree with most of the responses. PETA is a grey issue, but luckily, they are only one of MANY animal organizations. I personally prefer getting involved with and donating to humane societies and rescues in my area that I can visit personally. If someone is able to go and volunteer at a facility run by PETA and stay involved, I think it's a good thing. If PETA is not up your alley, find another shelter.

Euthanasia is another issue completely. I'm willing to guess that most of the deaths cited were due to either injury or severe temperament issues. Not every animal picked off the street or rescued from abuse is going to make it, and having a program that is willing to deal with that tough issue is good. I used to work for a wildlife rehabilitator, and our success rate was less than 50%; most of them we euthanized immediately due to their injuries. And that ratio is good for that line of work.

In addition, the higher the influx of animals, the tougher standards of adoption a shelter has to take. If there are too many animals, the shelter may be forced to put down healthy animals with severe (but potentially fixable) behavior issues (such as aggression) to make room for the more adoptable and safer animals.

Most shelters (not just PETA) have temperament tests that animals have to pass before being deemed adoptable. Ever watch Animal Cops or some of those similar shows on Animal Planet? Animals that don't pass are humanely euthanized because the shelter can't afford to invest hundreds of hours and dollars in a case that they can't guarantee will ever get a home.

Thankfully, some sanctuaries only take in animals like this so the shelters don't have to make that decision. I know PETA does tend to ship their animals off to other shelters right away for these special cases, and others, such as breed specific rescues.

Overall, in short, if you have any concerns about a local rescue or shelter - get involved! Learn how to train animals, learn how to take in tough cases, become a foster parent, something! They all need the help.

I agree with the other posters. Petakillsanimals.com is a ridiculous website that has been around for some time and attempts to sort of skew the truth. Like some of the others have said, PETA does euthanize. But it's not because they want to, or because they have fun doing so, or because they want to roll around in the money that is donated to them.

PETA is not a regular animal shelter where little old ladies bring in their perfectly healthy cats when they can no longer care for them. PETA is an organization that gets a huge number of severely injured, sick, abused, and disabled animals. Most of the animals are about to die on their own anyway but are put down to end their suffering.

So if you do not want to support PETA, that is fine. A lot of people do not like them for various reasons. But make sure it's for real reasons.

I do not support everything that PETA does. I don't agree with everything that they say. I don't send them money. But PETA has done a lot to raise awareness and spread the word, and I do appreciate that. So I wouldn't say I am against PETA, but I would not say I am 100% for them either.

Main Word :
Disgusting!
May I Ask If The Site Is False?
Because Peta Killing Animals Seems Outrageous Don't You Think?
If Peta Is Killing Animals What Other "Sourse(s)" Would Be Killing the Same Or Far Worst More Amount Of Inocent Animals Each Day Year und Decade ?

This Seems A Tad Too Un-True Because If This Is So Called True Why Were Or Are We Supporting It For The Other Due Causes Fur Other Discusting Places Or Farmesies Of Harming Killing und Playing With Lives Of Animals?
Fur Example: disgusting KFC???

That Puts PETA Supporters To Shame Or Also Embarrassment with disgussting Shame Why We've Been Supporting PETA ?

So Main Idea Is This A False Or True Site?!?

Read the posts above yours. As a few us have said, PETA does euthanize many animals. But it is not for the reason stated on petakillsanimals.com. It is usually due to extreme injuries or sickness. If you want to know more, see the link that moon posted

I support petas killing. better they die quickly, the only pain being the p***k of a needle, than live out a live of misery.
On the same note, i support assisted suicide.
