Actions
Every Role Play ever created has actions in them. Every person goes about saying what their character is doing differently. What your character does should be set aside from what they say, somehow.
The Special Character Set Off
This is one of the most common ways of saying you are doing something. The action is set off by an asterisk (*) or some other character.
Here are a few examples:
*Walks to the counter and gets a glass of milk* (Walks to the counter and gets a glass of milk) ~Walks to the counter and gets a glass of milk~ {Walks to the counter and gets a glass of milk} And so on. There are many characters you can use, each one works just as well as the last.
The Color Code
I have seen someone off set their actions by using colours. This is effective, as your actions stand out; but be warned, it may cause headaches. I personally find this one to be a bit dotted for my taste, but that is because I post longer replies than just one line of text.
Well, here is the colour code example:
"I can't believe you just said that!" SLAPS
The in-Text Action
This is my personal choice. The In-Text Action is what most authors use. They just type it out in the paragraph. This gives your post a more formal look, and takes less time. It is more of a direct narration of what you intend your character to do.
Example:
I looked out the window and sighed, "Today is going to be a long day if it doesn't stop raining." Drops of water streaked before my eyes as I banged my head against the glass.
Ali walked into the hallway looking for her best friend, who was no where in sight. "Where is she?" she whispered to herself. "She was supposed to meet me here for lunch!" The lunch bell had rung five minutes ago, and she was getting worried. "Lori, hurry up!"

Point Of View
Yet another tip for you is what point of view to use. There are two that are most appropriate for Role Plays. Those two are first person, and third person. I shall take you through the ups and downs of both with the finer points and examples of each. Keep in mind that you shouldn't switch points of view.
First Person:
First person in when the character is the one who narrates the WHOLE story. It uses words like "I" "Me" "Myself" "Mine" "Ours" and "We" when referring to the character. The good thing is that you can openly display your thoughts properly, as I find it odd when third person states what the character's thoughts... Personal thing.
Example:
I wandered through the city with no intent to go anywhere. I just had to move. Some tried to talk to me, but I found myself ignoring them. I don't want social interactions right now. "Go away," I would snap, or would just think it. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I am not normally like this. I smile, and stop to chat with everyone who knows my name. Today I just feel like being alone.
Third person:
Third person is what I call the Stalker Point of View. It is as if someone else is narrating a person's every move. This is why I find it odd that people put thoughts in third person. It runs through my head as "how would a stalker know what they are thinking?" Anyway (though stating is alright though), this is the captain's choice of Point of View. The words used are "He/She" "They" "his/her" and their name.
Example:
Evan meandered through the field as though he were looking for something, scanning the ground for any sign of an object that is out of place. His mind was wandering, as well. He was thinking about a girl.
(Does it not make you wonder how the narrator knows Evan is thinking about a girl?)

Setting your Post Apart from the Crowd
There are any number of ways to do this. There is the colour stand off, there is the font size change, and then there is changing your post style. Each is unique, and each gets the job done.
The Colour Stand Off
I do this. You pick a colour and post in it when ever you are in RP mode. This sets what you are saying as yourself from what your character is doing. The colour I use is red. I use red because red is associated with my avatar's hair colour. You may use any colour you want (although I wouldn't use Yellow). Just highlight the text, go to the "Color:" drop down menu, and choose what colour you want to use!
Example
She walked toward the mall in hopes of seeing the guy she had a huge crush on. She didn't even know his name yet! All she knew was that he was gorgeous.
I wandered away from the scene in exasperation. I tried to mediate, but they seemed to want to fight! Nothing I could say or do would break them up. It's hopeless.
Changing your Font Size
This can either work really well, or look like your screaming/whispering. I must request you don't use X-Large or Tiny. It is a headache and I will change it. I am just that way about it. Anyway, to change your font size, you go up to the top (or side) of your screen and look for the drop down menu that says "Size:" and choose your font size. Simple and easy.
*Ducks from flying debris* "Hey watch where you're throwing stuff!"
*Ducks from flying debris* "Hey watch where you're throwing stuff!" (That is small. Imagine tiny. Hard to read.)
Changing your Post Style
Your post style is another drop down menu to the top or side of your text box. There are several options there, and each one gives you a different look. If you want to preview it, then look below the text box and press preview.
I can't example this without changing the style of the post, which would look out of place.
