http://seanbonner.tumblr.com/post/252364222/defensive-omnivore-bingo I found this in one of many animal rights/vegan blogs I follow. I read through the little boxes and was laughing. They are VERY common things that omnivores/carnivores like to throw at us veg*ns. xp It'd be funny to start dabbing away with this.

I've gotten all of these before, but mostly "Do you eat fish?" and the one about the extremely unlikely scenario where I'd "have to" eat meat.

rolleyes Exactly. I get the first one, and I tell them that I would eat plants. Then they say the last one I say I would eat humans. lol.

These scenario things make me think about how funny it is that very, very, very few veg*ns know that animals like deer (yes, deer) will eat songbird hatchlings.
No, I'm not kidding.

I fail to see what that has to do with veg*ans, but....okay?
besides that, in most cases where natural herbivores end up occasionally eating another animal like that, it's usually because they're deficient in certain nutrients. And I'm inclined to believe that those nutritional deficiencies are most likely caused by human activity. Deer aren't known for regularly eating baby chicks. it's not a normal part of their diet, and it happens very rarely.

I guess we could always just reproduce madly and eat out own babies, though. xd

Hatchlings (both reptile and avian) provide a superior source of nutrients that is easy to obtain (defenseless hatchlings, no protection) and provides a huge source of protein and amino acids necessary for life. It's also been observed in some species of squirrels. It's basic foraging ecology; why spend time and energy foraging for plants and other materials with the necessary nutrients when a great source is right there, ready for the taking and easy to obtain?

I still have to disagree. until just a few years ago, deer and other similar animals were thought to be exclusively plant-eaters. There are only a handful of times when this behavior has been documented. And of those, it is generally agreed that it happens because of mineral deficiencies. They believe they eat them for the calcium, not protein.
also, from what i've read just now (this reply has actually taken me about 20 minutes, so that I can look this information up and not appear to be talking out of my a** XD) They aren't eating the meaty parts of the birds. They eat the legs (not much meat there), the wings, and the heads.
apparently they also eat eggs sometimes. Even so, I still fail to see what this has to do with the topic at hand.....

It doesn't directly relate to the topic at hand, just what some people have been saying and just reminded me of that little tidbit. I'd also like to compare our sources to see what's going on, because your information doesn't corroborate with mine. http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/news/press/ontape.htmQuote: When she first recorded a deer eating nestlings, she wondered if they would eat eggs, too. She incorporated the help of a captive deer at the research center to find out. "We presented it with a few quail eggs -- just to see what it would do -- and it munched them right up." Also, some peer-reviewed, scientific journals with the same information, nothing remarking on nutrient deficiency: American Midland Naturalist, 2000Bird-Banding, 1978This article indicates that deer consume the flesh of the birds caught in mist nets and leave the skeletons behind, mostly eliminating mammal predators as the culprits. It is also evidence that the deer are eating the meat. If you can't see the articles (I pulled these from JSTOR using my college's access to the articles) I'll be glad to either save them in pdf format or take screenshots for you. smile
