Okay, first thing, my friend explained to me that what's in this book is that the Shadow realm is combining with the Prime Material plane. Does that not sound like a REALLY bad idea? I mean, that's going to SUCK for people on the regular plane. The next books are going to be so depressing.
Secondly, the afterlife, as described, sounds like it pretty much blows. I mean Regis, 'sets a table for guests who never come'? How depressing!
Plus, the fact that regis and Cattie-Brie are still technically on Faerun leave it open for them to be 'rescued'. What's with that?
Any thoughts? Or Clarifications?

First, I just finished the book. Second I'm so ******** pissed I can't think straight, talk normally to my family, or even be civil.
Some of my favorite characters were Cadderly and Catti-brie. I hate how Cat and Drizzt just finally got together (8 years skipped over) and then voila! Death. I'm happy that Jarlaxle was with the Companions of the Hall in this book because he made everything a little better; however, I hate this book. I adore the series, but I absolutely HATE the past 3 books. This one really got me and I don't want to wait for any more books. I mean Jarlaxle did silently promise that he'd look for Cat, but seriously, the whole Mielikki keeping Regis and Cat in the summery field and Cat DANCING!? That really bugged me.
The last 3 chapters were the ones that REALLY bugged me. I hated how Salvatore devoted like 2 chapters to Drizzt fighting, then 2 paragraphs to Cadderly chasing after the dracolith and becoming the Ghost King himself. They they all go back to Mithrill Hall and didn't really explain what happened to Cat and Regis, until Cat had good-bye sex and left with Regis on the freakin' unicorn. I'm sorry but how Salvatore treated and wrote Cat in this book bugged me. She wasn't really there the whole time! I was too pissed to feel bad for Drizzt losing Cat. I was screaming in my den and my brother just turned his music louder. >>;;
The two planes combining sounds HORRIBLE. He didn't really explain or say whether or not magic went sort-of back to normal. Also, the whole afterlife-field thing where Regis and Cat are? Pissed me off. It's like, was it really Mielikki or was it what Mielikki used to be? Is she now corrupted/broken/etc? Because Salvatore made it sound like Mielikki was too good to be true. Also, one thing I do hope is that Drizzt goes with Jarlaxle when he leaves because I don't want another mopey emo Drizzt. I'm really confused and I thought someone told me that Cadderly after the Weave comes undone is still alive but freakin' looney as hell. But apparently I misread/misheard/misunderstood. I really hope Salvatore has started on the next book because this, to me, was an unacceptable ending. I'm happy that he took Wulfgar out in the last book, and I know that it has been a good 30+ years that have gone through the book, but that's . . . it really bugs me on how he treated Cat. I know he never did a good job on her, but still. It seemed like he just threw her away. I think why it's really bugging me is because when I first read the series, I connected to Cat, so seeing her written this badly upset me greatly.
I understand that Salvatore was trying to get up to speed and present with the rest of the authors and world setting of that world, but this book seemed too hasty. This is the first book I read on my winter break (break started on Thanksgiving) and this book really soured my mood. I was going to reread the series this winter, but now I'm so mad at the author and series I don't want to read it. I have more to say, but can't think of it right now.

Amen. I think, from what the D&D nerdgroup has told me, the reason all this s**t is going down is that the guy who owned/invented D&D finally died, so all his b*****d underlings changed the way magic worked in the game. So they had to make up an excuse for magic to change, so they killed off Mystra and are replacing her with another god, who changes the weave or makes a new magicky whatever. SO, what happens in the game happens in any book series that's in the D&D world, including forgotten realms. Therefore RA is not to blame, however, someone has to own up to this failure.
I still don't understand why the two realms are combining.
But yeah he could have lengthened the book, and took his time.
And I also was miserable after it; I couldn't sleep and was depressed all the next day.
I wasn't fond of Cat, but I don't like how it ended. Cat's afterlife is GAY. And apparently, they go there because they don't really have gods they followed so if Mielikki didn't rescue them, they would have gone to this one god that takes all unclaimed souls. And his afterlife sucks more.
I think Jer-Jer (Jarlaxe) is going to travel with Drizzt (whether he likes it or not) because he really likes him. We know Drizzt will mellow because he's almost normal in the prologue of the first Transitions, which is in the future, but I am not looking forward to all-new psycho Drizzt.
And seriously, how many other people have lost people they love and Drizzt is all like wise and giving advice about moving on but he can't take his own medicine? What is this?

its like you said, what happens int he game-world, happens int he book...and my most hated 4e decided it was a good idea to combine the 2 planes together, so voila it happened int he books.
Oh and yes, if you are an atheist (i use this meaning one who worships no gods) simply become part of whats called "the wall of souls" a black and painful thing where you simply EXIST forever.
Oh and this brings me back to a story i heard once that when RAS wanted to write the Cleric Quintet back during 1e he wanted to make caderly a monk. But they had JUST switched over to 2e where monk were no longer a "core" class, so TSR (the company who owned FR before WOTC) specifically told him that he could not make a book about a class that did not exist in the game. So he was forced to make caderly a cleric instead.

Hey all, Long time no see =/ Sooooo busyyyyyy ToT
So yeah, all in all I am agreeing on the sentiments here. I read the book and was rather disappointed...
The good side -
I've always talked to my pals about how awesome it would be to see all of Salvatore's best characters, working together, fighting on the same side against some monstrous evil. Ghost King delivers. Seeing Athrogate and Pwent together was HILARIOUS. Cadderly, Drizzt, and Jarlaxle all fighting the same fight. Spectacular. Shear awesome.
The bad side -
The book seemed thrown together. The entire side story that he put in to coincide with the companions of the hall and the attack on Spirit Soaring ended up being totally pointless and irrelevant. Some characters we've never given a damn about before (other than pikel) wander around getting slaughtered by beasties half the book. To no real end. I mean I just don't care. How can you go from the awesomeness of Drizzt, Jarlaxle, and Cadderly, working together. to a bunch of nobodies fighting random stuff and expect the reader to give a damn. What ended up happening with Cattie-brie and Regis just seemed like some cheap way out to not have to deal with their characters the whole book or something... bleh. Thrown together. Bad form Salvatore, bad form.
And yes, the ending was s**t. Worst ever pretty much.
In the end much of it boils down to 4.0 D&D being horribad. So I'm not going to write Salvatore off or anything because of this book. It's not his fault the guys over at WotC decided to turn D&D in to a table top game of World of Warcraft, with a spell system so watered down and intuitive that your blind, deaf, and dumb hamster could play a wizard...
I'm not fond of 4.0. At all. And this is just another thing it has ruined on its path to being mainstreamed like every other game on the planet these days.

Epic, I was miserable the whole day after reading it and am still sadden, as it is the next day. I read it from 8 pm to 2 am then woke up at 8:40 and read until 10:30 and finished it as my sister left back home (4 hour drive away). I was miserable and watched 4 movies after it (Paranormal Activity, Swan Princess, Up, and District 9 - in that order).
I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of his best characters coming together. I squealed when I realized that was happening. After letting it soak in my mind, I've calmed down, but I'm still unhappy about certain instances.
I'm glad that I am a fan of RAS on Facebook. *cough* His status today was "working on the next Drizzt book" I squealed and jumped up and down on the couch. I scared my dad and dog. >>;;
I think (and hope) that Jarlaxle will stay by Drizzt for a while because I think he needs him, otherwise Drizzt might go splat on Cat's cairn.

Wow, talk about totally unrelated movies xd .
I think Jer-jer hanging with Drizzt is the plan.
And the day RA stops writing Drizzt is the day my imagination, and my teenhood dies. (My childhood died with Steve Irwin. Jk, I think it died when Sesame Street killed off the count and replaced the cookie monster with the veggie monster.)

WHAT?! They did what to the Count and the Cookie Monster?! *screams* scream
Yes, the movies did help me....keep my mind off of it, except Paranormal. o.O *shakes head*
I do hope Jarlaxle stays with Drizzt. It seems like he needs someone and Jarlaxle doesn't want to be in control of Bregan D'aerthe again quite yet.

All the characters are different: Bert and Ernie are rarely on, and if they are, they aren’t together, Grover is second to Elmo and Oscar isn’t quite as grouchy. But the thing that drives me crazy is that Snufolofogous can be seen by everyone, not just Big Bird. Now he’s even called just “Snuffy.” Remember when Cookie Monster used to have a pipe, then eat it? Gone.
Apparently, Bert and Ernie are too "closeted gay", Cookie monster is unhealthy, Oscar is too depressed.. read this article.

I cant believe that happened to sesame street scream wow...a veggie monster.... its just horrible! im already scared of vegetables.... The book disappointed me.... i mean i waited a year for it and then i get this piece of blah... i mean just randomly killing cat off made me depressed, and it seems like he just didnt feel like writing about regis anymore so he killed him too! However, i was excited to see pwent, athrogate, drizzt, and jarlaxle all fighting together.... i was kind of hoping to see entreri but then again it might have made the book worse... it kept hinting that the ghost king was looking for entreri, and since he gave up th life of an assassin, wouldnt that make him easier to track? hmmmm.... I was also kind of glad that the spellplague finally came into the story, but i wanted it to be explained more...
ugh i havent been on in soooo long. i seriously hate junior year... its screwing with my life.

I absolutely hated The Ghost King, but on FB today Salvatore announced that Wizards of the Coast has signed him on for 6 more books.
*grumbles* You don't kill off the character I attached to, damn it.

I was mad when i found out both Cat and Regis die. if you want to get rid of Regis just send him back to Icewind dalde like Wulfgar. Would have made total sense from what was said when Drizzt took him up there to visit Wulfgar. and killing Cattibrie doesn't make must sense in my mind. I also wish the fight with the ghost king was better. it was epic in its own right but it just seems like there could have been more to it.

I've said my opinion many times in this thread and I still agree with what I said. Though Salvatore is currently writing the next book for the series and it should be out (probably) in October this year. I'm mad but I'll still read.

Finally fixed the stupid posting bug (darn you GaiaArch). So....anyway!
I'm so worried about the next book! What if Drizzt is depressing the whole time?
And on another note, despite the target audience (preteens) What do we all think of the cute new books out about that one sailor kid, Maimun?
