it is not necessary in the way that it is a waste of human life
but it is necessary in the way that as a fairly primitive species, killing is almost the only way we can resolve our problems on a large scale

It depends on the situation. If your country is threatened then, yes, you should go to war to defend it, but if you are just going to start a war for gain in land, etc. then no, war isn't the answer
