Alright. Last night I read my first New Avengers comic book and my second Wonder Woman comic book. Yesterday I also finally found time to read the 4th comic in the latest Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
I am underwhelmed by Wonder Woman. I can't exactly say why. There is certainly enough going on, plenty of plot twists but, for some reason I just don't find myself involved with the character. I think I will keep reading though. As I said there is enough going on and it is interesting, perhaps I'll find myself drawn in and actually caring about the character as I continue to read.
The New Avengers, on the other hand, drew me right in. I was immediately deeply involved with some of the characters. Captain America, Spiderwoman, Spiderman and Echo were the four that seemed to get my attention. Silver Samauri too for some reason. I'm actually looking forward to the next issue.
As for the BPRD, It was clearly a connecting comic book meant to bridge from what has happened already in the first three and get us to the fifth one where things will start to come together. Having said that. It was still pretty good. I've said it before and the analogy is still not too bad but the BPRD is much like the X-Men meet H. P. Lovecraft. I was glad to see Abe Sapien stop moping and start taking action. Of course getting himself killed seems a bit extreme but that was only heavily hinted at. I'll have to read the next one to see what actually happened. I fully expect they'll find some way to bring Roger back.

lol I'm roleplaying Wolveriene in an rpg online. It's really a stretch for me because I'm generally very wordy and Wolveriene doesn't say much. It's fun to write him though.

I read Marvel 1602 this weekend and I must say that it was well done and very interesting. They took many of the familiar marvel characters and put them in the year 1602. The changes in names and how they interacted with their world was very well done. I could tell that a lot of effort had been put into getting the time frame right. For one thing Jean Gray was masquerading as a boy so that she could function without the draconic restrictions that were put on women at that time. Dr. Strange played a role that to me was very reminescent of the legends of Rasputin, although Dr. Strange was far more benevolent than Rasputin ever was.

SUPERMAN: GODFALL
Firstly allow me to say that this is the first Superman comic/graphic novel I've ever read. Most of my admittedly limited acquantence with The Man Of Steel has been from the rare guest appearance in some other comic book, The Justice League of America or the movies and occasional cartoon I might have caught.
Superman is by his very nature a difficult character to make empathetic. I mean the guy is invulnerable, invincible and handsome as a greek god. Add to that the fact that he is the ultimate 'boy scout' and you've got your work cut out for you to make this guy someone that your readers can relate to. That being said, the writers of GODFALL did a masterful job, and there wasn't so much as a whiff of kryptonite to be found.
You know, Kryptonite, specifically green kryptonite the only thing that Superman is really vulnerable to on Earth, the stuff they give you a complimentary 55 gallon drum of when you declare yourself a villan in the DC universe.
Now technically Superman has a few other weaknesses, red sunlight for example, prolonged deprivation of solar energy from our humble yellow sun, oh and mind control type things, magical attacks...you know little things like that.
Most of these are unimportant to the plot of GODFALL. One becomes very important though, and I'm not telling you which one, neener neener neener.
Anyway, in GODFALL, Superman aka Kal El of Krypton becomes a very sympathetic character. He's a low level government worker on Krypton. The destruction of the planet never happened, instead his father Jor El has discovered a way to keep the planet from litterally shaking itself to pieces. He doesn't have any of his 'Super' powers, but he does have a lovely wife. An alien immigrant named Lyla.
He also can't quite seem to shake the feeling that there is supposed to be something more, that he is supposed to be something more but political upheaval are in the wind and a group of gurilla aliens attack him. These 'illegal' aliens have been hunting down low level government employees and killing them in retaliation against the government which has mandated that all non Kryptonites live in 'camps' and register. These aliens are not allowed to marry or have children or any other things that they want, like hold jobs and live normal lives.
And that's just the begining. Things first go down hill from there. Then they go way downhill for poor old Supes. I don't want to give away the major plot but let me tell you, it's wonderful. It's well thought out and it shows a more human side of The Man of Steel. It also shows a courage in Superman that has nothing to do with being very nearly a god and everything to do with the willingness to take a chance to uphold an ideal.

Alright, my beloved soulmate, KilgoreSometimes got me the first New Avengers graphic novel: BREAKOUT.
Firstly, the action is intense and they don't waste any time getting you into it. There is suspence, mystery and amazing character interaction. I'm rapidly becoming a Spiderman fan just because he is so sarcastic. I may also be developing a fangirlish crush on Captain America. Scary no?
Ok, so BREAKOUT picks up 6 months after the break up of the Avengers. Some mysterious group, we know not who, is aware of the disbanding of the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D is busy and The X-Men are also doing something so this group decides that now is the time to strike *cue dramatic music*
So the mysterious group hires a mysterious (for now) villan to break into a super maximum security prison for superpowered evil types. Then the hired villan decides to put his costume on and...Voila! Electro
Now the Mystery Group of Villans (MGV) Expects that since all the known groups of super heros are either disbanded or busy elsewhere, their operative will be able to go about this very noisy prison break and get away without getting caught, without leaving a trail that can be followed and without leading any grief back to them.
So naturally Dare Devil and Spiderwoman are in the facility to see an inmate and tagging along with them is Luke Cage.
Peter Parker is loosing a debate about what movie to watch with Mary Jane when the power goes out, due to Electro making his move in the prison and so Spiderman gets out of watching some chick flick but gets a quick dip in the fridged Atlantic in exchange. Seems as though the aircraft he chose to attach a web to so that he could get out to this prison, called The Raft due to it's location I presume, not only got shot down but was also carrying...Captain America. Iron Man shows up too but not until after Spiderman gets thrown to the wolves (escaping and rioting criminals) and looses his mask just to make it that much easier for them to track him down later on.
So much for not attracting too much attention.
Anyway the day after this little shin-dig, Captain America decides that Fate meant for the heros who were at the prison break to form the core group of the New Avengers. To that end he fast talks Tony Stark into the idea. Stark repeatedly mentions that he no longer has unlimited funds since the disasterous break up of the Avengers. So the heros who do agree to this idea won't be getting paid and they won't have a lot of neato cool gadgets...or at least won't be expecting them. Stark is a gadget guy and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he keeps them in neato cool toys just as a way of justifying his hobbys (inventing, desiging and building advanced technology gizmos).
It's amazing the amount of content they've managed to cram into this short graphic novel. I'm not even going to tell you some of the more fascinating plot points because I don't want to give too much away.
One of the things I find most interesting is the friendship between Captain America and Iron Man. They are philosophical opposites yet they are a potent force when they team up and they compliment eachother nicely. Steve Rogers is an idealist, he thinks of how things should be and how they should act; Tony Stark is a pragmatist, he understands how things are and what needs to be done to get to the end they require.
At the end I was almost disgusted with Tony Stark but then...then I thought about it a little bit more and was actually very intrigued. The moral dilemma is one that I felt would be very realistic (if such a word can ever truly be used in a fantasy/psuedo science/sci fi format) for characters coming from their background and in the situation they are in. And granted I really don't know much about their background but still I could see it.
You see...Captain America is adamant that The New Avengers don't kill. But sometimes there are things so bad and so dangerous that you have no choice and Stark understood that. But...the New Avengers don't kill...so what to do? Get yourself a designated hitter. I was so hot about that (angry, ok? I get emotionally involved when I read). They don't kill, but it's ok to use someone to do your killing for you. And yet...what else could they do? In that situation, knowing what they know, would there be a better solution? Probably but I can't think of it. I think it's gutsy of the comic to take on this moral issue and I'm interested to see what they do about it.

Ok I read both of THE FUTURIANS graphic novels tonight.
Sapphi says...Meh.
They're ok but they fall just barely short of really drawing me in as a reader. I find several of the characters quite fascinating but they never get around to developing those particular characters and the other characters, who they devote time to developing, I just don't find very sympathetic or interesting for that matter.

Four of my comic books were in today: The BPRD, Wonder Woman, Infinity Crisis and The New Avengers.
Three of the four were excellent and the fourth one was good.
The BPRD was the fifth of six issues and so many things started coming together that I was terribly dissappointed when I came to the end of the issue. Liz seems to have figured out something of importance with Johans help but we didn't get told what it is yet. I will say that H.P. Lovecraft would be proud of the monster Mignola has come up with.
Wonder Woman: Now this issue was superior to the other two I've read and made me glad I'd kept reading it. I hope that further issues continue with this type of emotional involvement.
Infinity Crisis: this one was the one that was good. A lot happened in this issue but you never spent enough time with any one character or group of characters to really get involved with them. I get the distinct feeling they are building up to something amazing. Plus, I must add, whatever they're doing with Animal Man seems inspired. I was also glad to finally see Batman react to what his OMEC technology is doing. It seemed a little strange to me, and out of character if you ask me, that he would see this technology of his pretty much destroying everyone and everything and just sit back and watch it.
The New Avengers: I've saved the best for last. Wow does Captain America get the truth out of SpiderWoman, and what a truth it is. Nick Fury is back in the thick of things. The Sentinel is there (out of nowhere I might add, although that's a minor pick on my part). Things are hotting up for the new team and the plot is thickening rapidly. Now the question is...are the men, which is pretty much the entire rest of the team, going to pull together and try to help SpiderWoman or...are they going to withdraw from her, isolate her and treat her like the traitor she is? That is an important question and it will, if you ask me, be a pivotal one for the team.

I have read the first two issues of R. A. Salvatore's adaptation of his novel EXILE into the comic book format. Firstly allow me to say that there is finally good art for Drizzt. Mmmm...Drizzt.
I'm really enjoying these comics. True you can't get the depth of emotion or darkness that so marks the novel in a comic book. But as an illustrated suppliment to the novel it's fantastic. They are holding true to the novel, no big surprise since Mr. Salvatore himself is involved. It's wonderful and I'm very much enjoying this adaptation.

I read the latest issue of the Infinity Crisis. It's very interesting. I've actually enjoyed this last issue. Of course I have no idea how they're going to tie this in with what the others are doing but I'm certainly looking forward to finding out.
Lets see, The Phantom Stranger showed up so you know right away that strange things are afoot. The Rock of Eternity was reassembled, the 7 deadly sins recaptured and Nightshade kidnapped. They need someone to sacrifice themself to the Rock of Eternity to keep it from falling apart again and they've chosen their sacrifice.
lol and I still haven't given the major spoiler away. Busy comic book.
