Id just like to discuss this trend Ive noticed. In most modern day novels, a lot of authors like to stick at least one homosexual character in ex. City of Bones series (Not Sure Of The Name), Harry Potter (Wasn't Really In There, But The Author Did Confess To One), Marked Series and the list goes on. So is it trendy to put a gay character in nowadays? Tell me what you think (P.S I am gay and no I don't find it offensive but a little weird honestly)

Presumably, most Twilight characters are just gays trying to make people think they are straight.
I don't think homosexual characters are a new trend, though. Most writers who count (aka not people who write poppy garbage for tweens) don't use gays as a major plot point or anything of the like, and don't do it any more (or less) than usual. Of course, there is a slight upward trend in gays in literature, simply because homohsexuality is slightly less of a stigma now than it was in, say, the 50s.
If there is a trend I'm not aware of, or if there were to be one, it would be more along the veins of recent trend in movies about homosexuals - it's not trendy because being gay is cool, but because talentless hacks use the controversy to cover up bad acting/directing/writing/whatever.

I don't think that having gay/bisexual characters in and of its self has become a trend, but I think the current popularity of paranormal romance lends itself to this. At least that's what I've noticed.
Plus, as fatal_GRACE said, it's not such a stigma to be gay/bisexual anymore.

There's also one in the first of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, Lafeyette. He's an awesome character though, so we'll let Charlaine Harris off for that one. He makes for a pretty interesting second book in the series as well, lots of secretive things going on there!!
I don't think it's necessarily a modern day trend. If you look at the books of the modern era, there were homosexual or bisexual characters then as well, the authors were just more cryptic about it, considering at the time it was illegal. Take for example The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Dorian himself was bisexual, as was Basil (the painter), in fact it leads one to think how on Earth Wilde got away with it for so long at the time (of course there is noting wrong with it, but at the time I suppose it was frowned upon).
So no, I don't think it's a trend, its just that modern authors are more free to use homosexual or bisexual characters, as this is now accepted in society as being a natural thing.

Those are some really good points. I mean sexuality is part of a character, and shouldn't cover up all of them, but its just strange to me, seeing as some people still hate us homosexuals and all :/

To use Vogue's example, Oscar Wilde ended up spending two years in prison for 'sodomy'. You won't see that happening nowadays.

Yeah, back on topic, what do you guys think of authors who just go with the stereotypical gay? I mean most of the ones Ive read have been ok, but some have just been so bad that I couldn't stand it.

It's irritating to have to put with in my books (and in real life).

Lol I'm still wondering if there will ever be a mainstream gay character as in a very popular book
