Final Fantasy XIII - Face Your Destiny IntroductionHey, this is lorinator_lionfish, soon to be recorder for the Final Fantasy Fellowship Guild. SLJ has been kind enough to give me a sticky to post information about upcoming games. So why am I writing here instead of there? Well I'm still trying to get my act together and figure out how I want to post the information so that I can keep on updating it as well as allow people to comment on it. So if anybody has any ideas about how to work the sticky out or help collect info, it would be really helpful.
So anyways, I created this topic because XIII's coming out soon! March 9, 2010 is the planned date for the North American release (and of course its being released in Japan on the ubber earlier date of December 17, 2009). The first multi-platform Final Fantasy, being released for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 (besides re-releases), there has been some controversy between die-hard fans who believe the games should be released only on their mother consoles (Playstation and in the case of the older games Nintendo), which cultivated the game, and more open fans, who say that the different consoles allow the game to be widely received and acknowledged more. According to Yoshinori Kitase (Producer of XIII, as well as X and Dissidia) in the latest trailer on the official website (I'll find out exactly which one), this is also the first Final Fantasy to use HD for the first time, making what seemed amazing graphics, even sharper.
I plan to create four posts associated with this one for the storyline, a nother for characters, a post for stats, systems, and technical information (mostly taken from Wikipedia, since the official website strangely lacks this information), and the last for any other information and news that I can dig up (taken from various sources if I can find them and the official website does carry scant news updates). I’ll try and update them regularly as new stuff pops up. Hopefully these posts won't get too dry and long, but I'm including them to stimulate discussions and any ideas people might get from them (and I sound like a teacher now). This will be kind of a test run on if I can pull off this recorder thing or not (and what better game to start with, than one that fortunately has a lot of information). Thanks and expect more in the future!
I also want to put up a spoiler announcement. I won't put up anything that I believe to be a spoile, but my idea of spoilers may be different from somebody elses. It's your choice whether or not to keep reading.
And I just noticed as I was posting this, that I know pratically nothing about BBCode and HTML, so if anybody knows any way to make this more pretty or has some cool gizmo to throw in, just let me know and I'll change things/implement the ideas. Thanks again!

Story
The easiest thing to do now is just post what the official website has given us and then work with that. Wikipedia also has some interesting insights into the game which I may include. The best way though to get a real feel for what Square Enix has given, story-wise, is to see the trailers. That may be a bit harder to explain on here, so I'll try and find them on youtube and post the URL's here in case anybody's interested. I also highly recomend (and probably will over and over again) the official website as it is the only place that has truly reliable information (albeit extremely slow on updating, and ironically has the least amout of info).
Here's what Square Enix posted:
Cocoon – a utopia in the sky.
Its inhabitants believed their world a paradise. Under the Sanctum’s rule, Cocoon had long known peace and prosperity.
Mankind was blessed by its protectors, the benevolent fal’Cie, and believed that tranquil days would continue forever.
Their tranquility was shattered with the discovery of one hostile fal’Cie.
The moment that fal’Cie from Pulse – the feared and detested lowerworld – awoke from its slumber, peace on Cocoon came to an end.
Fal’Cie curse humans, turning them into magic-wielding servants.
They become l’Cie – chosen of the fal’Cie.
Those branded with the mark of a l’Cie carry the burden of either fulfilling their Focus or facing a fate harsher than death itself.
A prayer for redemption. A wish to protect the world. A promise to challenge destiny.
After thirteen days of fates intertwined, the battle begins.

Characters
Seven main characters have been included on the official website: Lightning, Snow Villiers, Oerba Dia Vanille, Sazh Katzroy, Hope Estheim, Serah Farron, and Oerba Yun Fang. Out of these characters Serah is the only one that hasn't been confirmed as a playable character.
Lightning This solitary young woman speaks little of herself – even her true name is a mystery. She is known to others simply as “Lightning.”
Snow Villiers An irrepressible, fiery young man, Snow dives headfirst into danger using nothing but his powerful physique as a weapon. Easily swayed by emotion, he is prone to rash words and actions. Nonetheless, many are won over by his outgoing and optimistic nature.
Oerba Dia Vanille Vanille is an endearing young woman with a relentlessly sunny disposition. Her bright personality gives no hint of the dark resolve that lies within.
Sazh Katzroy Sazh is a friendly, cheerful man who is never without his curious companions – a chocobo chick and a pair of pistols. He is quick to banter, but also keeps a mature perspective on matters. Uncontrollable events have set him on his current path, but another purpose compels him to walk it.
Hope Estheim Hope has enjoyed a markedly uneventful youth on humankind’s haven of Cocoon. His life is turned upside down at the hands of the Sanctum’s Purge.
Serah Farron Serah is Lightning’s younger sister and Snow’s fiancée. Always showing concern for Lightning, she has an inner fortitude that allows her to make her own decisions without relying on her older sister.
Oerba Yun Fang Fang is a mysterious woman who is working with the Sanctum military despite bearing the mark of the detested l’Cie. She has a strong-minded personality and is unconcerned with trivialities.

News and Other Information
December 1, 2009 - The package art for Final Fantasy XIII has been revealed. I would paste a picture of it, but I think it might take up too much room. So we'll go with my attempt at a description. A white box with the XIII logo in the top right corner, it contains a picture of Lightning with no background. Relying on it's lead heroine and the words Final Fantasy, Square Enix is making a controversal move from the beautiful backgrounds of X and XII.
December 17, 2009 - Final Fantasy XIII came out in Japan today for the PS3 (it's not going to be released for the X-Box 360 in Japan) and the hype has already started. According to finalfantasy-xiii.net the first review results have been leaked early, a whooping 39/40! Praises have been sung about it's highly strategic battle system, detailed graphics, and speedy tempo. It's pre-dominate weakness is its linear storyline until about the midway point of the game. Close to a million games were sold in Japan on the first day of its launch, half of what Square Enix shipped.
- Okay this has no specific date, but I just wanted to let the music connoisseurs know that the Japanese Final Fantasy XIII page on the Square Enix official website has started to upload demos from the official soundtrack. Scheduled to come out on January 27 in Japan, this four disk collection was composed by Masashi Hamauzu. The main theme of the game was originally supposed to be composed by Uematsu, but instead it was given to Hamauzu when Uematsu was selected to be the composer for XIV. The Japanese main theme is "Because You're Here" sung by Sayuri Sugawara and the international theme is "My Hands" sung by Leona Lewis. So go ahead and check out the demos on the website. The easiest way to find it for those that don't speak Japanese is to google something like Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack. Once on the page, there should be enough English words to make it through. The track names are unfortunatly in Japanese so its hard to tell whats what, but its still pretty interesting. Personally I think that the battle music for this game is amazing. It's the background music for the website and some people might recognize it from the E3 trailer. Happy listening!

And a randomly reserved post, just in case I forgot something (which is extremely likely) or I come up with something else. It helps me sleep at night.
