Name: Donovan Lau
Occupation: Personal Assistant (Ex-assassin)
Age: 29
Date of Birth: November 25th
Race: Human
Personality: He has a bit of an acid tongue on him sometimes. While Donovan has mellowed over the course of his marriage he still likes to push people’s buttons, and generally would like to just spend time with his family. If he likes to bother you, it either means he really likes you or really hates your guts.
Clan Information: Donovan comes from one of the many clans that still exist today, by tradition they are assassins and bodyguards who practice particular rune magic to make their jobs easier. His clan can choose either gender for head; it simply depends on whether or not they have the right qualifications for the job. One of the unique aspects that had come out of the assassin business was the large amount of medical knowledge acquired over time about different races. As a result the clan also sports one of the best multi racial doctors.
History: Donovan was born to Mi and Long Lau. His mother had been formally an informant from the Ito clan before her marriage to his father and in her retirement had become very politic savvy about clan politics. When Donovan was two, his father ‘stole’ baby Kara from the sky city where she was born after the council there refused to grant her mother’s request to have her human friends Daemon and Yume raise her. He never remembered this meeting, but it was the true first meeting between the two.
The first meeting he did remember happened when he was around seventeen, when he was set up on a false job to be ambushed. By this time Donovan had already been working as a professional for a year, and had been running candidate for the next clan head until he had made a tactical error with another clan politically. Some say he did that on purpose to get out of being clan head. The fact he managed to do so without starting a feud strengthen that rumour. It didn’t help that everyone knew that ‘Van’ liked to keep things simple. Unfortunately for him ending up beaten up in an alleyway only to be found by an angel threw all simplicity out of the window.
Donovan wanted a simple life, and he knew what life in the clans meant for him. He had initially expected that he would go on with his life doing jobs, only to retire when his (busybody) mother found him a good wife. This idea was also thrown out of the window on their official second meeting. While Donovan was not fond of ‘body hunting’ as the term was called, he accepted the job to hunt down an Earthbound Angel to harvest parts. Many claimed he did so out of morbid curiosity because the person who he was to harvest from was the woman who had saved him years previous. Instead of taking the quick way, he made himself her personal assistant. Simply by showing up at the school one day and taking over her office duties which included pestering the headmaster Tracy Scott into doing his work.
Eventually Donovan found himself a part of Kara’s world. He took great joy in tormenting Scott (though he would never admit it). His greatest pride was helping Ryu and Feng two of Kara’s children by sending them to the Ito clan for training. Donovan even, as much as he hated to at the time began liking baby Jin. Most of all Donovan found himself loving (even lusting sometimes) after the woman who he was supposed to kill. After six months of pretending everything was alright, he confessed to her, and then promptly told his to be wife to stop helping strangers in dark alleyways.
Three months after that, his mother gave him the ultimatum of marriage or face her wrath. Two months later he finally got the item needed to proposal, one month later Kara beat him to it. From there Donovan realized, his life was far from simple.
Due to unusual circumstances Kara it turned out had inherited a position and land upon being married. Since her father had no sons, she stood to be clan head, but it also meant that Kara could not claim his last name. She needed to keep her last name in order to past it along to the sons she already had. It was agreed then by her and Donovan that they would keep their respective last names, even though Donovan was in the unusual position of being part of her clan. Not only that, but Donovan was now forced into the position he wanted out of. Politics.
Still, Donovan could not complain, he raised several more adopted children with her. The two had toyed with the idea of having children on and off. In fact Donovan had hired one of his distance cousins to torment (help) Scott for him. The deciding factor though, was knowing that their children were growing up, and on Kara’s part realizing her husband needed something to keep him busy before he got empty nest syndrome.
The two decided to go to Dai, a cousin of Donovan’s who served as one of the doctors for the Lau clan. It was through Dai that they got the referral for the clinic, knowing how hard and possibly dangerous it would be to convince a hybrid child. There are times Donovan wondered if it was a bright idea…
