Anxious Prophet

The hunger was overpowering.

Even when it consumed his mind, he made certain he remained within the trees so as to avoid attacking one of the survivors. Gray would have loved to still be counted among the humans, but since he wasn't, he was going to do his best to protect them from, well, himself. While it might have seemed noble, and it was in a way, he was also protecting himself. If he gave in to his body's new needs, he would be no better than any other monster, and he wanted to be better.

He so desperately wanted to be more than a monster.

Even so, he had to eat. The desire for live flesh was too much; the need to have warm meat in his hands, to drink heated blood straight from a dying being... it startled him, and it sickened him, but there was no denying the thrill of killing something with his bare hands and feasting on it. He hadn't known he had it in him, but the evidence was all of his hands, wrists, shirtfront.

Even his face, where bloody smears made a mocking beard.

He couldn't remember, exactly, how he'd managed to capture the bird, he only knew that when he'd come to himself, he was already halfway through the thing's carcass. Even now, when every bit of him revolted against it, he brought the bird to his mouth, biting down hard on what remained of its soft meat.

Feathers were all around him, one sticking to his chin, when he heard branches snap.

Fear doused him in equal parts with shame, and he threw the bird aside, falling back to cover his face with his hands. Whoever it was - whatever it was - he didn't want them to see him like that. Not when he still had the face of Grayson Graves.

"Who's there?"

Avalon was moving around in the woods. She frolicked like one of those Elven beings you heard of in stories. Really though, she was pacing to and fro, in circles, going over the horrific urges that plagued her mind.

That dream she had has while alive had scared her then. Why now, did Avalon hunger for human? Why? Cannibalism was wrong! Avalon knew that all too well. Yet, the stink of flesh and blood called out to her and she was torn between being a good little zombie and a horrible monster.

Avalon ventured forward. Head lulled in deep thought. She continued that way, away from the school and deeper into the woods, until her nose perked. She flopped onto all fours, mimicking that of a werewolf and howled into the air. She smelled it. BLOOD!

Avalon booked it straight ahead, branches snapping and leaves fluttering behind her sprinting frame. She spotted him then, Grayson. She had seen him around the school while she was alive. Now, she was a zombie and he was too... with a fleshy treat!

Avvie peered up at the boy with large, puppy-dog hazel eyes. She curtsied her brown ruffled peasant skirt.

"I am Avalon. May I have a bite?" She cocked her head cutely to the side and bared her zombie fangs.

He didn't immediately recognize the girl, but that was really nothing new for Grayson. Outside the immediate sphere of his interests, he paid little mind to all else - a fact that could have greatly contributed to his early demise, actually, considering he'd been kidnapped from his bed and thrown into a veritable torture chamber. Regardless, he knew her face, and it put him a little at ease to realize that she was no longer one of the living.

If he had to be caught with blood all over him, he supposed he'd rather have it be by another undead. Though it might provoke them to attack him - and wasn't that just a pleasant thought - at least it wasn't someone who would be truly revolted by his appearance. Despite everything, Gray didn't want to be seen as a monster, even if he was technically just that.

"Oh." Shoulders relaxing, he drew the back of his hands across his face, trying to clean himself off. The terrible hunger still wasn't completely abated, but at least he could think clearly again. Clearly enough to realize that the girl - Avalon! That was her name - that Avalon didn't quite have her zombie feet under her.

He felt for her, and so he smiled, reaching for the discarded bird. His stomach flipped a bit at the thought of handing such a cute girl something so grotesque, but she had to eat. He'd learned that the hard way.

"Here you go. There isn't much left..." He sighed, walking on his knees to her. "We can find you something else, too."

If he couldn't do much else, at least he could take care of Avalon for a bit. He'd feel better helping someone else out, anyway.

Avalon reached out gratefully for the dead bird and then sunk her fangs immediately into it. The blood spurted from the carcass up onto her face and sprayed over one of her eyes. She was not alarmed by the sudden makeover and only beamed at Grayson as she devoured the remainder of the bird that had been handed to her.

She patted her tummy happily. It had ceased it's ridiculous growling and Avalon's hunger was practically quenched... but she could go for another snack.

"More to eat would be lovely." Avalon nodded. Human Flesh.... hissed a voice in her head. Her eyes flashed viciously to red for just a moment before returning to hazel.

"Another bird?"

He wondered if she'd been this child-like when she was human, but he couldn't remember. Still, it didn't look like she was in any shape to take care of herself, and he couldn't just leave her to her own devices, zombie or not. She'd probably do something really terrible, like attack any survivors that might exist (though, not having seen any, Gray was beginning to wonder) and it didn't sit well on his conscience.

"Sure." He placed his hands on his knees, kept smiling. Avalon didn't seem too perturbed by his appearance, nor the wound on the side of his head, so he felt at ease around her. "Though, I'm not sure how I caught that one... I kind of blanked out."

He scratched the back of his neck, glancing around. "But we'll figure something out."

Avalon had always been cute and cuddly and hyper as a human, and as a competent zombie, she kept her personality. The only differences now were her hideous appearance and the wicked voice that snapped off terrible things in the back of her head. She certainly was not built for fighting and did not really fear any of the other students, living or dead.

She had not made many cliques while at Barren Pines, she typically stayed holed in her dorm doing schoolwork, or studying in the common areas, away from the eyes of the others.

Since being dead, Grayson was the first being she had come in contact with and it was a welcoming sight, not only because he had food, but because he seemed safe and nonthreatening enough. Until he mentioned blanking out.... Avvie had not yet experienced such an event, but if he was able to catch a bird, as a rabid cat would have, then what else could a blanked Grayson manage?

But, Avalon didn't show her discomfort with the prying thought and just smiled at the other zombie.

"K." She cooed and shuffled her feet on the ground as she moved forward into the woods in search of the rest of her feast.

It bothered him, a little, how easily she seemed to have adjusted, but he pushed it to the back of his mind. After all, there were many other things to take the forefront.

Not only did he have to manage himself, now he had someone to take care of. Grayson had never been particularly nurturing - he was too lazy for that, too irresponsible to have someone depend on him - but this was different. She was functioning and aware, didn't require supervision at all times, right? So he could help her out and it wouldn't be too much of a change from how he'd already been functioning.

That, and she was a welcome distraction. Alone, Grayson had little buffer between his rational mind and the dark thoughts that had plagued him since he'd awoken a zombie; with Avalon to occupy his thoughts, he figured it would be a little easier to compartmentalize his new life, for what it was worth.

As she was already heading into the forest, he followed, keeping a careful eye out for anything that would harm her. He wasn't a fighter, no, but if he could, he would keep her safe.

He'd given his word, hadn't he?

Avalon continued forward with a hop-skip-jump to her gait. She turned only when she noticed the silence coming from Gray. She looked at him with large... sunken, dead... hazel eyes. She cocked her head to the side and gave a faint half-smile.

"It's ok. Don't be sad..." She stated, clueless to all the goings on in Gray's head. The only thing that bothered Avvie most about being dead was the fact that when she 'woke up' Barren Pines was gone up in smoke with all her belongings. That had to have Gray in a depression also. She was sure he had lots of cool possessions.

"I lost all my stu...."

A rustle from beside her made her head snap over to the side in a ridiculously inhuman fashion. Her hazels turned to a fierce red and her fangs peeked over ashen lips as they curled into a freaky grin.

"SQUIRREL!" Avalon shouted and was off the path in an instant and after the furry critter. Her zombie self had taken over.

Before he had a chance to respond, Avalon was off, her instincts having taken over. He wondered if that was what he'd looked like during the period he couldn't remember. It was troubling, but no more so than waking up after a blackout, sitting in the midst of deep gouges in the ground, his front covered in blood and bits of animal strewn around him. His only comfort had been that the still-warm meat he'd been eating wasn't human - but he knew that was a luxury that was bound to expire.

If there were even any more humans around. Something told him to keep looking for them, something promised warm blood beating underneath tender, fresh skin, but he couldn't say what.

He also couldn't keep the thoughts at bay, no matter how much he'd like to.

Taking off after the pink haired girl, lips pulling back to reveal something like a snarl, he desperately fought the urge to join in the hunt. He'd just eaten, hadn't he?

But it was no use. He scented something alive, and he wanted it.
