It's 2543, and the world's resources have been completely dried up aside from surplus resources stored by the government. It's a man-made apocalypse. NASA has created a shuttle to take a select amount of people- the Hopefuls, they call them- out to space, in hopes of them landing on their desired location of Mars.
Why are they call the Hopefuls? Well, it's simple. The hopes of the entire human race lay in their hands. The Hopefuls will be the last humans in existence.
How are the Hopefuls chosen? If they're between the ages of 13-19 and certifiable geniuses, their families were notified that they were chosen for a "special boarding school" and kept in a facility until needed. As the world begins to collapse, they'll be sent off.
