Guild Rules

1. Follow Gaia's TOS.
2. Be respectful to fellow guild members.
3. No cussing. We are all writers and, therefore, are able to think of ways to say things that do not require cussing. Not even in our creative works.
4. Keep everything PG-13.
5. Make sure to critic others work. Criticizing is a double-edge sword. You get it and give it and vice versa.
6. You must post, at least, once a week.
7. You should try to write according to grammar rules. No chat-speak. No MiXeD CaPiTaLs. No walls of text.

Or Else Clause
For most cases, there will be a three-strikes and and you're out rule. The first time you break the rules, you will receive a warning. The second time you break the rules, you will receive a second warning and maybe a suspension. The third time you are kicked out.

However, there may be times were a break of the rules will be so severe where you will immediately receive a suspension or ban. All cases of this nature will be looked at by the Captain.

Exception: The warnings for not posting once a week are each member is allowed three warnings in a two month period.

Guide to Criticizing

This is concidered part of being respectful to your fellow guild members.

Getting Critics
1. Critic the work, not the writer. For example, you should never say anything like, "You suck as a writer." Instead say, "This piece has a very stereotypical plot line, the characters are one dimensional and are Mary-Sues, and there are lots of grammatical errors.

2. Try to say one positive things for every negative thing. However, there are newbie writers out there, and their work may not have any good points. You should end with some sort of encouragement. For example, "Keep practicing you will get better." This is overrode when the person specifically says, "Please be brutal" or "You can be as mean as you want" etc.

3. Try to give comments that are appropriate for the level of the writing. Good writers do not happen overnight, and there are steps to get to a certain level of writing.

4. Never just say "It was good" or "It was bad." After both of these sentences, there needs to be the magical word "because." For example, "It was good because the characterization of the main character is very strong."

5. You don't always have to give reasons behind your impressions. For example, "I felt very uncomfortable in the scene between the girl and the father. It seemed rather creepy."

6. Don't be afraid to let the writer know you are confused by a section. You need to tell them where ever you are confused or don't understand. They will need to know this so that they can correct the problem.

7. Don't be afraid to not give ways to fix the problems. Sometime this can be more damaging than helpful. Once reading your suggestion, they might not be able to think up of how to fix the problem in a way that is better suited for their goal.

8. A smile face is not enough. You are a writer; write something.

9. Don't be offended if they don't take your advice. It is their story not yours.

10. If the writer asks for input for a specific section of the piece, try to say something useful about it.

Receiving Critics
1. You should always thank the people that take the time to read and critic your work even if it isn't useful.

2. Do not get defensive of your work. If they didn't understand what you were trying to do, then the writing isn't clear enough, and you need to revise it.

3. If you feel that someone is especially harsh when criticizing your work, you should report it to your Crew Member containing a link to the thread (the specific post preferably) through PM. If they do not respond withing 7 days, then you may PM a Vice Captain with the same information and that you have already tried to contact your Crew Member. If you say that you don't care if they are brutal about your work, you forfeit your right to report the critic to a Guild administrator.

New Member Applications

Step One
If a person wishes to become a new member, they should click the join guild button saying why they would like to join this guild. If there is no reason given to join the guild, the request will be immediately denied. All applying members should have patience. Applications will only be reviewed once a week.

Step Two
After the application has been reviewed, the Captain will PM the applicant asking for a writing sample of a poem or 100-200 words of prose taken from a longer work, giving the applicant two peices of writing to critic for a critic sample, and a link to the Guild Constitution. All members should read the whole Constitution before replying with the writing sample and critics. The applicant will be held to the Constitution from that point forward. If the sample and critics are not sent back within two week of the Captain asking for them, the application will be denied.

Step Three
After the Captain has reviewed the writing sample and the two pieces of critic sample, they will accept or deny the request giving reasons for both. The member will have a month to PM the Captain after fixing the reasons given for a denial.

Member Requirements

Contact with Guild Administration
As a member, you need to follow the Guild Rules. If you need assistance concerning anything, you should contact the Crew Member assigned to you via PM. They will be your primary source of contact with the administration of the Guild.

All PMs concerning the guild should have "Guild" somewhere in the title of the PM. This is to help the Crew keep their Inbox organized. If "Guild" is not in the title, the Crew Member has every right to ignore and delete the PM. If it is a complaint about a specific post, there should be a link to the post or to the thread where the post is contained.

If you contact a Crew member and put PM in the title and the Crew Member does not respond within a week*, you can PM a Vice Captain. This PM needs to conform to the requirements for a Crew Member PM in addition to the following information: the name of the Crew Member you tried to contact and a copy of the PM sent to them.

If within another week the Vice Captain has not responded to you, you can contact the Captain or another Vice Captain with the same information.

*If you feel the matter is urgent, please PM your Crew Member and a Vice Captain at the same time and note that in your PM; however, if the matter is not deemed urgent by the Crew Member and the Vice Captain. You will be given a warning. You have five of these such warnings before action (suspension or ban) is taken. This is not to hinder true reports but to discourage false reports.

Weekly Posting
If you have prior knowledge that you cannot post a specific week (ex. your family is going on vacation), you should contact your Crew Member to let them know when you are leaving and when you will be back. You should PM them this information in enough time to make sure that you can receive a response. However should something happen and you have no pre-warning that you will be gone (ex. your computer crashes), you need to PM you Crew Member as soon as possible. If you let us know that there are extenuating circumstances, we will invite you back to the guild if you are banned.

Voting
Members are required to read all Guild announcements and to vote in all Guild Stickies.

Members are not allowed to create Announcements or Stickies.

The Captain will only invite someone to crew if there is a need for another crew member and there is no one in the "So you want to be a Crew Member" thread the Captain trusts as a Crew Member.

Crew Members are assigned ten Members to watch. They are required to check their members once a week for activity by seeing if their Guild post count has gone up and posting that weeks totals in the Weekly Posting thread in the Crew subforum.

Crew Members are not allowed to suspend or ban anyone without a Vice Captain's being made aware and consulting with the Crew Member. However, they are able to warn their Members. They cannot give warnings to Members belonging to other Crew Members, Vice Captains, or the Captain. They should contact the appropriate Guild administration.

Crew Members are not allowed to accept New Member Applications.

Their Boss
Just like every Member is assigned to a Crew Member, every Crew Member is assigned to a Vice Captain, and the Crew Members should contact that Vice Captain when they need to suspend or ban a member. This Vice Captain will be in charge of making sure that the Crew Member is doing their duties and posting once a week.

Voting
Crew members are required to read all Guild announcements and to vote in all Guild Stickies posted in the Crew Subforum. They should not vote in the Stickies in the Main Forum as those are specifically for Members.

Amending the Constitution

Amending the constitution requires a preliminary vote in the Crew subforum of at least 2/3 majority. If the amendment passes this preliminary vote, it is then made a stick in the Main Subforum for the Members to vote one. This again requirs 2/3 majority. Both votes will be open for two weeks, and any member that did not vote will be suspended for a month.
