Hi there! I've been curious and pondering about Buddhism for a while, while I get the basic concept, I don't really understand the sects, the refuges, and the more in tricate details. I've read most of the topics on this forum relating to my questions but with the slew of information, I just kinda tumbled over in confusion. I feel I really would like to be a Buddhist, but I don't want to jump in without knowing the full picture, I don't want it to be a label I put on myself (I had a friend who would jump around, changing her beliefs without knowing what they really were).

Er. Hrm.

Well, where do you want to begin? History? Practice? Basics or in depth?

What do you already know?

I understand the History and the basic concept, but when the actual practice comes into play, I just get so lost. DX

I also don't understand the difference between the sects very well either.

Given the first post you made here, I'd have to say the problem's definitely not lack of availability of information, but rather the opposite. In that case, I'd recommend taking it slowly - pick up one small chunk at a time and learn it. There's nothing that says you NEED to know everything right now - if that was true, I'd not be a Buddhist for sure, because there's no way I do. xd

Let's see...practice? Put the Noble Eightfold Path into your daily life. Live the Ten Perfections as best you can, keeping in mind they're perfections, and it takes a lot to manifest even one - but if you can do one, the rest follow. Abiding by the Five Lay Precepts can help a lot.

Give meditation a shot. I'd recommend picking up a fairly easy type at first. Breathing meditation is probably a good place to start. It helps with concentration.

For the sects, I think the best bet locally would be the sticky in the main forum, to be honest. It explains things rather well. If you have questions about specific sects and practices, feel free to post in there - I'm sure that, between the members of different schools/sects and our combined resources, we can answer it. 3nodding

Alrighty, thanks, this definitely helps a lot... I just kept reading and each time I tried to get a bit more information more and more of it didn't make sense. XD;

Just relax. Go with it. 3nodding

It's easier if you don't take it like it's a math final or something and try to cram it all in your head immediately, because it's pass or fail. It's not pass or fail. You have time. biggrin
