Anyone else have bad experience with teachers? My current band teacher (for three years now...) is pretty bad herself...

She talks for about 20 of the 50 minutes of the band period, if not, sometimes more.

I've just started out in percussion, and she's taught me nothing at all. We're the advance band, and she gives us level 1 and 2 music instead of 3's or 4's, and she gave me this one song on bass that was extremely easy, and I've had 7 years of music experience. I think I know how many beats a quarter note gets in 4/4...

She expected me to play in the Jazz Band (seperate band from symphonic) and play drumset and to play a solo...I told her I didn't have any experience, nor took any lessons, yet she still expected me to play. I declined the solo.

Anyone have the luck as I have?

I love my current teacher. I have two right now. one I've been taking for the last 5 years and another through the University. The one I've had for the longest while doesn't hesitate to beat the hell out of me. Not only that, be brags to other people about the hell he puts me through. He finally admits that I'm "getting better" rofl . I'm also doing teaching now, so he's been helping me in terms of telling me what to teach. I found working with books that I've been through makes it easier to teach because I remember what I had to work on. A good teacher won't make you buy stuff (except for maybe sticks an a metrenome AND a practice pad) but it's all about knowing how to practice and understanding the vast source you can get knowledge from. I've been able to get everything from drum tuning/recording/technique etc. out of this guy. It's great. He'll even take time to teach me something that I specifically want to learn. Mind you, I've also been working on my transcription skills so I'll write out something and he checks it over. I'm doing pretty good. Your success on drums (or any instrument) is only relative to how much hell you put yourself through. I've somehow been put from one level of hell to another and it keeps getting harder and after a lot of stress and suffering, I'm starting to like my progression. Anyways, that's me rambling on and on....I'll stop now 4laugh

I'm hoping to ditch my current teacher. I think I'll list my complaints just so you guys can take your time to read them or ignore them I don't care i just want to complain about this fatty.
Every day he complains about me. The bell rings he gives us one minute to practice and i have to take out the set and get everything ready in about 2 minutes or he complains. After that he makes us play the same 10 songs over and over. The drum beat is almost always something that requires no skill at all and then one day he just says hey Tylor during this low part of the song i just want you to do some fills. I asked him how many fills what speed, length, style, and count he wanted he said just make it up. So i do some fills he says how about we do a little less fills because i figured maybe he wannts me to do a worth while solo since nothing but the drums play there. So I lightened it up a bit and he just ignored every other question i had about how exactly he wanted me to do it. About 3 days ago wich was like 2 months after he told me to just do fills he says oh how about we not do fills some emo girl in my class was like YEAH it sounds retarded when you just start rockin out during the song doing all that hard stuff and my teacher is all YEAH shes right. I just got mad and started yelling you think thats rockin out and thats hard stuff then your all retarded. So the rest of the class period I was pissed because he underestimates me and always gives me the easiest thing you'll ever play on a songs that i've made parts up that he admitted would sound better but he wouldnt let me play it cuz i thought i wasnt good enough. but during that class period the other drummers were being a bunch of retards like always theyre in the advanced band with me so i kinda expect them to know a few things but then they start making me even angrier asking me questions like how do you loosen the snares and then one of the other drummers tightened his bass drum heads until he couldnt move it any more because he thought he knew how to toon it so as i'm yelling at them my band teacher is in front of every one saying i sound like his mother and i need anger management.
The only thing he has ever taught me is how to read music and a lot of successful metal drummers dont even know how to read because they dont need to. The only reason i was staying in his class because next year ill be going to the highschool and theres some really good drummers there even if they dont play the same stuff as me as good as me i know they can show me a lot of stuff but i dont think its worth listening to my stupid teacher who knows nothing about drumms yell at me for doing something perfect. It occured to me today that the only beat he know is bass drum on the first count and the snare on three with me riding on the closed hi hat so you cant even hear it
I have a few more complaints but i dont know if i want to keep typing about it the bad thing about all this is that i might not be able to get out of his class its all up to my dad

Heres the sequence of events for drum teachers. First teacher was great! He was in a band, made it fun and actually liked me, though he was not so much technical as practical. Then I had my grammar school band teacher. Knew nothing of drumming. Never actually taught me anything. I would have to say I taught her more than she taught me. Second teacher, horrible, just horrible. I cant explain to you how bad he was. Third teacher was decent. Taught me well in jazz, which aided me in honors band. Fourth HS drum teacher. Doesnt get much better than him folks. An accomplished orchestra drummer. Played for the NY Philharmonic, amoung others. Has traveled the US as part of various bands and orchestras. Very technical and practical. An awesome teacher. Had a WIDE range of knowledge. A true percussionist, could play just about every percussion instrument. A cool guy, really loved what he does. Only drum teacher whose name i remember. Mr. Teofolo. My last and final teacher before I went on indefinate hiatus. Very technical, perhaps overly technical. Cared more about how your hands moved than the sound of the drum. Was OBSESSED with rudiments. But was a good technical teacher if you needed that. Also part of many bands. Still can't touch Teofolo.

My rock band teachers r awesome. My school band teacher acts like a baby. She heas to leave the room when she's mad. She laughs for no reason. She threw herself on the floor twice, once for us getting the music right, and once because the woodwinds were way off.

Mines cool because he'll come to the section and play with us until we get what we're workin on. most of the perc. section hates em because he does'nt let us talk that much, but I think that's good because some of our band realy needs help. his only problem is that he plays traditional grip with his right hand. smile

My drum teacher is not like yours at all, he is really nice and caring. He will help you with anything you need help with and teach you with anything you want to learn. If you want to work on your drumkit skills, he will do that, If you want to work on your mallets, he will help you. I have learned so much from him, he is amazing.

My Elem. teacher sugercoated everything. My M.S teacher is amazing. He has a great personality, and he is very good. In his 36 year career he has won many, many awards. Including State, and National Band Director Awards. I am very sad that I will only have one year of his teachings though... He's retiring crying
