STORY:
It started in November, 2008. An unprecedented outbreak of violence. The media mostly attributed it to anger over the election. The newspapers printed all kinds of sensational stories. About a dog that ate its owner before it was put down. About a mother who tore her babies to pieces. Missing children. Serial killers. A closer look hinted at a larger trend. An epidemic. An epidemic that spread far faster than any infectious disease had a right to. An epidemic that killed the living and brought the dead back to life. Driven by an insatiable hunger for living things, these monsters multiplied rapidly, adding to their ranks with each and every victim. Survivors were quickly left to fend for themselves as government analysis of the situation, coupled with a delayed reactive, then aggressive proactive stance, lead to dismal failure. Some people still believe that the epidemic was caused by a virus, or a bacterium, or a parasitic organism. Some people believe it is divine retribution.
Some people believe it is Judgment Day.
PREMISE:
This roleplay focuses largely on the characters and their struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world infested by zombies. However, there is a purpose behind this apocalypse, which will be revealed as the story progresses. Until then, players are not bound by anything except the usual roleplay rules.
ZOMBIES:
The most important aspect of this roleplay is the zombies, which are created through a supernatural force, instead of the usual virus.
The origins of the epidemic is, at this point, still ambiguous. All that is known for certain is that any human that dies will become a zombie in a matter of hours unless his or her body is properly disposed of. Any animal a zombie kills will also become a zombie unless its body is properly disposed of. Zombies must consume living things in order to obtain their lifeforce, which keeps their bodies from decaying as they normally would. To help them locate this lifeforce, zombies develop a kind of aura vision. To them, the dead appear as shapes filled with darkness, figures of shadowy smoke floating on a background of pure white. The living, on the other hand, appear as shapes filled with a beautiful, radiant gold, figures of warmth and light that must be touched, tasted, and devoured. The only way to kill a zombie is to destroy its brain. Simple decapitation is insufficient, as a zombie's decapitated head will still attempt to bite as long as its brain remains active.
The thing that makes these zombies truly unique is that they can regenerate by consuming living flesh. What's more, a zombie that consumes massive amounts of living flesh can actually increase its mass, becoming a hulking behemoth.
LICHES:
An innovation I am introducing into this roleplay is the lich.
In this case, a lich is a zombie that has managed to retain its intellect. The easiest way to achieve this is by keeping the brain oxygenated after the body has died. In this roleplay, zombies possess a variety of supernatural powers. However, only liches are actually capable of using them. These powers are mostly based on mentally manipulating the energy that flows through all living things. For example, by withdrawing one's energy into one's self, one can become temporarily invisible. I'd like each and every lich to be at least a little unique, so I am allowing roleplayers to pick and choose their own powers. If you are interested in roleplaying as a lich, please include the powers you'd like to have in your application.
In any case, all liches are capable of tapping into the ether, a kind of network made up of the collected experiences of everything that ever lived on Earth. Liches can control zombies through the ether. Liches can also communicate with other liches through the ether, so long as they possess a talisman, an object associated with the person they wish to contact. Lastly, liches can absorb the powers of other liches by consuming their brains.
Bear in mind that, other than their intellect, liches are the same as zombies. All the rules that apply to zombies apply to liches, as well.
