The ability to run unsigned code on later versions then 1.5 has been the Holy Grail for Hackers. Constantly searching for loop holes, and glitches to exploit, as Sony continues to tighten up its Firmware.
But I bet Sony didn't see this one coming.
Fanjita who created the 2.0 Eboot loader has hit gold once again, by creating a Hello World program for Versions 2.0 and up. Thats right, even Sony's latest firmware will run this unsigned code. But how? Well, it uses the hit game "GTA: Liberty City Stories" and a gamesave to run the code.
Working upon the bases that the GTA Cheat device created.
Well, the gates are open. Fanjita has also stated that he wants to make his 2.0 Eboot loader compatible with this GTA loading of sorts.
So you will be loading through a loader, through another loader.
What I would like to see is a downgrader made through this. So 2.6 users can downgrade back to 1.5

And, Hopefully, 2.01 users. My PSP is stck there at the moment, and I'd rather not update my PSP for fear that I'll have even longer to wait to get it downgraded so I can play the homebrew games, such as PSP Minesweeper.

The funny thing about this though is the fact that Sony can't close the hole, for fear of hurting it's customer base, and ruining a certain aspect in a game that they promised would be there. So I can see this hole staying open for a very long time to come. There will likely be a downgrader for 2.6 before Sony decides to close up the game save exploit.

Whoa. thats shocking. Now, does that mean that in order to use the homebrew exploit, I'd need to have Liberty City, or a Liberty City game save?
I can't wait for them to get 2.5 downgraded. I had to get a used PSP after my original one was stolen, and the thing came w/ 2.5 already on it. My original one had only 2.0, so I'm waiting with baited breath over here. domokun

Thats correct, its tad more difficult to close up this hole because it deals with the game saves. Sony CAN close the hole, but it will be quite a process. A process that Sony will have to be careful where they step, or they might step on a landmine.

If a downgrade is possible on 2.5, I do believe it would work on 2.6. Which means all available versions of firmware are downgradable. Lets just hope the downgrade doesn't have any long term effects.

NO! Just because the ability has presented itself to run Homebrew through a gamesave doesn't mean that we can change our firmware by running it. A 2.5 downgrader is already in the works, but that DOES NOT mean that it will be released anytime soon. Remember what happened when they released a prototype of the 2.00 downgrader? People flocked to the thing, and half of them bricked their PSP's. It's best to lay low for a while, untill the People prove that the thing works nicely. And there is no reason to believe that the potential downgrader would work on 2.60 as well as 2.50. Sony always includes a security update with the upgrades. thats why a Downgrader is unlikely to work with 2.01 when it works with 2.00. There is no connection there at all. Similarly, 1.51 and 1.52 cannot and will not be able to downgrade, at least for the forseeable future. Just because a 2.00 to 1.50 downgrader came out does not means that we should assume that it will work on all other firmwares in between. Sony is actually making the holes for us to use in their upgrades, and, because of this, a downgrader may be only able to run through one of these new features, but not on other firmwares that do not have the feature, and cannot get it. The 2.00 downgrader only worked because a glitch was found in the Photo folder that was not there in firmwares 1.51, and 1.52. Just to let you know...

Ofcourse, you should wait until it has been proven that said downgrader works.
And a downgrader for 2.5/2.6 was more wishful thinking on my part. But you are correct, because a downgrader works on 2.5 does not mean it will work on 2.6.
BTW, by any chance do you know what security updates Sony added to 2.6? I believe it used to be listed on the Sony PSP site, I checked and it doesn't seem to be on there anymore.
