I need some electronic help! Dx My laptop has just randomly stop going into standy by or hibernate when I close the top of my laptop down. This sucks because I hate leaving my laptop on at hours at a time. >.< When I close the screen down and I opened it back up it just says "Preparing to stand by" and it stays on too! The day that this started to happen it staid on the WHOLE day I was out and they only way to shut down my laptop is to press and hold down the power button. I have been on so many tech websites and so far no luck at all! So any suggestions? Please! T^T

(sorry I havent been on, just been very buisy,school/homework/afterschool activities/etc)
Ok lets rock'n roll twisted
Whats your laptops operating system? I can guess what may be the likley cause.
Memory/Ram
Maybe a setting. Try checking your control panel settings.
Make sure your the only user on your laptop. If you make an account other
than the administrator(owner) It will usually disable options.
Another cause could be a registry error or virus. 2 Download these tools here to see:
Check for viruses: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

For registry errors. http://www.ccleaner.com/
When using ccleaner dont check anything just scan it. This will improve your ram by getting rit of temporary files the the HDD saves from performing actions/saving/acssesing web pages. YOu'll be amazed of how much it saves and the room it take up.
Malware bytes is fairly easy just click start full scan and check disc drive "C" Then let it scan. This may take hours depending on the size but it will definitly help if a virus is on it.

I want you to try to put it in standby mode manually. See if this works. Then please let me know what happends. And if it dosent go into standby we'll go from their. biggrin

No prob and thank you for taking time out of your day to help me. ^^
What do you mean by operating system? My laptop is on Windows XP. Is that what you mean or what is it that you mean? Sorry. Dx
I have checked my settings and they are all normal.
I have scaned and scaned my computer and I have no viruses. Is this ccleaner a scarer or what does it do?
and I have tried to put the compuer in standby mode manually and it still shows the screen "Perparing to Standby." T^T

My pleasure I like to help. biggrin
ccleaner clears up memory. However you may not need that then.
Also yeppers, Ok xp my other theroy could be this, check your task bar were the time is, And check whats running. On laptops ceartin programs interfear with stanby processes. Something as little as a download will do it too. Now for the geeky part. rofl
open task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) Scroll and check your processes.
Find the ones with the biggest numer example: I have opera web browser 300,000k. Post the processes with the biggest numbers. The'll say something like firefox.exe avguard.exe or something like that. List what you see from their. Then you could x out the window. Dont worry it'll be fine. I've fixed my pc/my sisters/my moms pocket pc, and my uncles pc. rofl

Hypothosis: A program may be running that windows is having a difficult time minimizing during the sleep process. One thing you must make sure you have done is, make sure automatic updates are on. It dangeroouse and can be catostrophic if the operating system is not up to date. They update security settings/firewalls and bug fixes. Iwhen I first got my dell diminsion 8200 I couldnt get stuff without errors. I had to update it and it worked like a charm.

Well the processese that has the most is iexplore.exe 276,492 K. That's my biggest one. And it's funny that you talk about updates because with my computer start freaking out I updated it and I had 22 updates. >.< but when I did that I tried to standby my laptop and it still wouldn't work. Dx I'm sorry my laptop is being a pain. Dx

its ok biggrin , I'm starting to think it got a hold of a bad update that corupted it. You notice any other problems? You should go to microsoft.com and get a new update. It should override the faulty sector. You have windows xp service pack 3?

Other problems? Nope none really. My internet works and other programs work and it shuts down just fine.
I have no idea what that is but I can ask my dad if we have it but I doubt it because my this was my grandmother's laptop before she gave it to my mom and she sent some cds for the laptop a couple years back but nothing that seemed very important.

Anytime! Sorry for the long reply I just had been very buisy. smile
I continued to search and found nothing. sad This is mysterious... One more theory is pherhaps the harddrive is going bad. This happends from age its nothing that can be done. You see when you delete something it never delets its only over written. Hardrives can only be written on and written over so many times. Since this is a simultaneous act it puts stress on the drives sectors. Eventually giving up the whole hdd. Pc and laptops can last for a period of usually 5 years before matience is needed on internal parts.
