My cousin wants to go out West with his horse and set up a little mini ranch so he can ride around in the "wide open space".
What are good "wide open space" states that don't get too cold in the Winter? My cousin was thinking New Mexico, and I suggested northern Arizona.
Also, what would one look for when acquiring horse property? All my cousin always boarded, so he really doesn't know anything about buying land for horses. Should he look for riding trails nearby or something like that?
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Texas?
If you're looking for wide open spaces that don't get cold in the winter, you're going to be in the desert. That's your trade off. I personally highly recommend Wyoming or South Dakota for wide open spaces, prettiest places I've driven through (and I've driven through 90% of the USA). But those get wicked cold in the winter.
As for horse property, you'll need to figure out how much acerage you want/need and how many horses you plan to support. What are you planning on doing? Just trail riding? The trade off of it not getting cold in the winter, is that it's really hot in the summer. I really don't know all that much about desert horse-keeping though, so I unfortunately can't help you too much.
Oh, Nevada. There's nothing in Nevada outside of Vegas. Seriously. Any state that has a sign saying "Last gas station for 200 miles" should be pretty much considered abandoned. Lots of wide open space there. Mostly BLM land though, I believe.

~Spirit of Dragons~ AriaStarSong Any state that has a sign saying "Last gas station for 200 miles" should be pretty much considered abandoned. What was the speed limit? 55, I think x.x Which we ignored. Still, longest drive of my life. And that's including the 19 hour day when we realized there was no where to sleep in Ohio so just kept driving all night. It made sense at the time. We were worried about zombies.

Why were you worried about zombies? Have you ever been in a car for 19 hours? We were driving on some back roads in Ohio, it was around 10pm or so and there was a lightning storm going on. The power was out in one of the towns we drove through. What do normal people do when their power is out during a lightning storm? Stay inside their homes! What did the people in this small town in Ohio do? Wander the streets! We came up to a stoplight and saw a woman walking out of an alley. We looked down the alley and saw an abandoned baby carriage. At this point, were at... about 16 hours in the car I believe. I screamed "SHE ATE THE BABY! RED MEANS GO!!" and we took off. Road trips are exciting. I recommend everyone should take one at some point in their lives. You learn all sorts of interesting things about yourself.

We're planning on a cross-country road trip this year sometimes.
