My boyfriend (of over a year) and I are talking about possibly having sex. We are discussing options if something were to go wrong with the birth control we would plan to use.
I am currently on the pill and have been for 4 months (Loestrin Fe 1/20) but I'm still not regular on my period despite that. We will use condoms also.
I worry a lot and need to know all back-up options, in case the condom would break or I didn't take the pill perfectly.

My question for you is: Can the Plan B pills be taken if one is already on a birth control pill? If so, does she need to change the routine of her birth control?

Also, if you have a source for this information, could you be kind enough to post it?

Thanks very much,

So I just found one source that seems semi-valid. I'd still like anyone to respond with their findings if possible too.

http://www.mckinley.illinois.edu/handouts/plan_b_contraception.html

"Plan B consists of two (2) pills. One to be taken as soon as possible with food, and the second pill to be taken 12 hours later with food.

If for some reason you take Plan B while you are on the active birth control pills, using the patch or ring; you should go ahead and restart your method the day after Plan B is taken."

"It is recommended that a regular method of contraception be started immediately after Plan B® One-Step, since Plan B® One-Step does not reliably protect against pregnancy beyond the day it is used...You should not deviate from the directions for use of your usual contraceptive."

Plan B seems to be safe to take. It's a good thing to take when needed. But it is not something you should be using often. It's for emergencies only.

Keep in mind that condoms and the pill are very effective. When used exactly as directed, the pill is about 98% effective and the condom is about 96% effective. So if you're careful and use both as directed, you will be extremely well protected and should not have anything to worry about. Even if you forgot a pill or if your condom broke you should be fine and still at least 96% protected (assuming both things don't happen on the same day). So you probably wouldn't need to take Plan B unless you had a good reason to suspect that both methods failed. And if you're careful that really should not happen.

So research Plan B and keep it on hand just in case. But don't get carried away and start taking it every month or anything like that! If both your methods fail often, then something is wrong anyway! If you often forget your pill, set an alarm or talk to your doctor about a form of birth control that you wouldn't need to remember every day. If your condoms often break, double check to make sure you're using them correctly.

Condom tips:

"* Store condoms in a cool place out of direct sunlight (not in wallets or glove compartments). Latex will become brittle from changes in temperature, rough handling, or age. Don’t use damaged, discolored, brittle, or sticky condoms.
* Check the expiration date.
* Carefully open the condom package -- teeth or fingernails can tear the condom.
* Use a new condom for each act of sexual intercourse.
* Put on the condom before it touches any part of a partner’s body.
* Hold the condom over an erect p***s.
* If a p***s is uncircumcised, pull back the foreskin before putting on the condom.
* Put on the condom by pinching the reservoir tip and unrolling it all the way down the shaft of the p***s from head to base. If the condom does not have a reservoir tip, pinch it to leave a half-inch space at the head of the p***s for semen to collect after ejaculation.
* In the event that the condom breaks, withdraw the p***s immediately and put on a new condom before resuming intercourse.
* Use only water-based lubrication. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as cooking/vegetable oil, baby oil, hand lotion, or petroleum jelly -- these will cause the condom to deteriorate and break.
* Withdraw the p***s immediately after ejaculation. While the p***s is still erect, grasp the rim of the condom between the fingers and slowly withdraw the p***s (with the condom still on) so that no semen is spilled.
* Remove the condom, making certain that no semen is spilled.
* Carefully dispose of the condom. Do not reuse it.
* Do not use a male condom along with a female condom. If the two condoms rub together, the friction between them can cause the male condom to be pulled off or the female condom to be pushed in. "

Thanks, Lorien. That was very informative.
I'm still curious though as to if I would need to restart my oral contraceptives or just continue with the pack I would be on. It kind of sounds like you would need to get a new pill pack to start on, but I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it correctly.
And he and I will not be having sex often by any means since our roommates are nearly ALWAYS in the room, haha, and we believe that sex should be a total immersion of your souls, not just some kind of quickie thing. I know just as well that I wouldn't want to pay $10-45 all the time to get Plan B either.

I would think you could just continue the current pill pack. I don't see why you'd need to throw that one away and start a new one. But I could be wrong. Better to be safe and ask your doctor about it. 3nodding

When I took Plan B, I believe I just continued my birth control same as always, didn't start a new box of patches or anything like that. But Lorien is right, it's best to check with your doctor/gyno first.

I think everyone else answered your question. lol

But I have to comment that I am on almost the same pill as you. I'm on Loestrin 24 Fe. Probably a knock off of yours or yours is a knock off of mine. However, your period probably won't ever be regular on this pill. For some reason this pill is VERY strong. I've talked to another woman who's daughter is on this same pill and she gets her period every time but it's only for two hours.

I seem to get mine every other time, and it's usually on the last day of the sugar pills, and it's very light spotting.

So don't worry about getting pregnant with this pill or about your period being irregular.

If you take your pill correctly, there should be no concern. This pill is wonderful.

Also, to avoid missing a pill or taking it late, set the time on your cell phone as an alarm. You'll never miss a pill or be late again.--my boyfriend also adds that if you put the phone somewhere that will make you have to get up, it will make you get up to turn the damn thing off. Cause he turns off his phone alarm without realizing it and is late for school = ] so there you go.
