I read on buddhanet that one of the precepts is not to sing, listen to music, or any form of entertainment. And also not to adorn or use anything to beautify oneself. Is this meant for the monks or for everyone? I work at coach purses and I have to do my hair and makeup, I probably would not have got the job if I did not. But what are your thoughts on it and is it required to follow these? I could actually get adjusted with time.
It depends entirely on how rigidly you wish to follow things - as far as I know, no singing/dancing generally only applies to monks and nuns, unless you're doing an observance day. Then extra precepts on top of the five generally prescribed ones (Not to kill, not to steal, Not to engage in sexual misconduct, not to speak lies, not to take intoxicants) get added to your practice; the three extras are not eating food between the morning of your observance day and the following dawn, no singing, dancing, music or other entertainment/personal adornments and no sitting or lying in a large/high seat or bed.
3nodding So no, you really don't need to worry about that one too much, to be honest, unless you're doing a special observance day.
