Government/ society

The Chryssalids have a very simple government. The queens rule as independent dictators over their allotted portions of territory/squids. Because of the telekinetic powers, disagreements are rare, and usually the whole fleet or army acts as one independent being. The workers and soldiers have the same place on the pyramid, so to speak, and get the same respect. (none) Spies, however, have a lot of independence from the queens, as they often need to be operating far outside of the influence of the queens, or have very personal decisions to make. The queens cannot micromanage all the spies dispersed throughout the galaxy, they are more concerned with the big picture. They have total control over their troops, through a combination of loyalty, a “for the greater good” mindset, and telekinetic control.

Lives are valued very little, even by the owner of the life. The only lives valued are the Queens, and to some extent, the spies. When a Soldier or worker is wounded or dead, they are thrown/jump into one of the slime pits present in every Chryssalid force. There they will dissolve into nutritional slime for new “Squids” to be spawned in.

The Chryssalid race as a whole is entirely devoted to war. They are in a constant state of war with almost everyone they meet. They hate and fear the rest of the galaxy, preferring the simple path of war to the muddles of politics and alliances. Occasionally they will hire single mercenaries, to aid their war efforts, by using them as military advisors and spies. Still, they are not to be trusted, and will kill you as soon as you are of no use to them anymore. Some queens choose to have a council of advisors, captured or hired, to help with strategy. The way this works is they all sdvisethe queen in matters of war and/or society. Every year the one who has been the least help will be duly executed, thrown into the sludge pits for matter to make more Chryssalids. This helps to keep the men motivated and encourages them to give the best they can offer. Some queens doubt this method, and choose to keep their own council, fearing spies leaking information or advising them into traps.

Chryssalids as a race have no religion. They are strictly atheist, and barely give thought to beings higher than they. Through science, and through interactions with other races, they have learned of the dimensions, but have given little thought to other beings residing in them. The closest thing they have to a religion is the underling's (workers/soldiers) near-worship of the queens. Their god Tarnak knows of this, and uses this to his advantage, making them proud of their "natural abilities. (more later) This drives them, along with previously stated reasons, to eliminate "lesser" creatures.

Diplomats
While warlike, the Chryssalids are not dumb; they realize the importance of maintaining a presence in the hall of coaligned planets. Their purpose is far from making allies, however. On the surface they seem to be civilized beings, speaking some of the more common tongues of the galaxy, and partaking of the regular things that other species do, like religion. The master plan behind this act is to create the impression that the “Squids” are not vicious beasts intent on killing. (which one could say they are) The hall would be much quicker to join forces to attack the menace if it were “alien” so to speak, than if it closely represented a normal race. Also, in addition to creating good rep, they can do their best to bog down the politics concerning the war effort. It’s one thing to declare war on a suspected aggressor, but if they have a delegate in the room with you saying that there is no attack on a planet you have to spend time confirming the facts before war is declared. (ooc. like the nemodians of star wars, bogging down the republic's efforts to stop the blockade of Naboo)

There are a select few “diplomats” on every planet that the Chryssalids have made contact with. They are of the spy class, and while spying is not the first priority, they still engage in that activity occasionally. They always go out of their way to attend social functions; they wear extravagant costumes which they claim to have religious and cultural value. They, in reality, are not interested in any of these affairs, putting up a feeble act disguising their totally alien nature. In conflicts in the past other races have been quick to attack because they did not understand the Chryssalids. Now, the diplomats are giving the other races in this galaxy something to connect with. Their disguise is not foolproof, however, as acting is not a squid’s strong point. The diplomats come with a crash course in diplomacy and in the fake culture/religion that the Chryssalids invented for the afore-mentioned political purposes. They do all they can to slow down politics, by filibustering or getting offended, attacking the enemies from within. When at times of peace, as most are right now, they work on their reputation, making political alliances and trying their hardest to appear like normal, so that when war comes, people might be able to feel sympathy for them. Also, their strange appearance can be used to their advantage. Most other races present in this region of the galaxy are humanoid, the only real exception being the Chryssalids. So a possible tact used by diplomats is to accuse others of racism, (specism?) claiming that they are only attacking them because they look “ugly” and strange. This usually causes apologies, and then forces are slower to oppose the Chryssalids.

(mod: This conflicts with your above entry as the Hall of Co-Aligned Planets is on Panacea Nostrum. The Chryssalid cannot be members of the Hall without having diplomats in the Hall. -DC)In that case they will be in the hall on Panacea N. I thought there were minor halls on each planet.

This is NOT real. I am posting this for better understanding of the Chryssalid mentality and race.

This is an example of a Space battle. I will use a boarding action against the Izani. They are orbiting a small planet, with none of the major races on it. We will assume the Chryssalids have already boarded the ship (it would take me a long time to explain how they do it, and I will explain that in a later post, see bottom) and that there are, in this particular corridor, 20 Izani and 700 Chryssalids. This is a realistic number, as Chryssalids are very poor soldiers, and usually come in great hordes.
Positioned at the end of the corridor are ten Izani, (renegades) and ten behind, with shields up covering the front ranks. Down the hallway comes a wave of Chryssalids, using their suckers to grab and run on walls, ceilings, and each other. They form almost a solid mass, with the front 2 ranks giving off high penetrating plasma bolts. the Izani set their auto guns to spray, and hunker down, trusting their shields for protection. Each bullet is guided, and so powerful it goes through many Chryssalids before stopping, hitting them all in vital or near vital areas. The Chryssalid casualties are heavy, but they are still progressing. (as they are running on six legs they achieve speeds of 20mph) the ground is now covered in Chryssalid bodies, lying prone upon the ground, being over run by their companions.
Within about thirty seconds, the Chryssalids struggle against the hail of bullets and reach within ten feet of the Izani line. Then the order is given, and five shrapnel packs are released, decimating the whole front of the Chryssalid wave. The Izani then begin to retreat, five of them having lost one of three shrapnel packs. (I am assuming here that they have fought Chryssalids before. Otherwise this would be very short.) The Izani are pounding down the hallway, and groups of three are stopping, with two pointing outwards, and one covering their heads. One will let loose a shrapnel blast, temporarily halting the wave, and then will run again, with shields on their backs. Three renegades have fallen already, with unlucky shots, or just great masses of plasma wearing though their shields. Only one is dead, the other two are carried by a pair that does not stop to fire.
After a few minutes of retreat, they reform at an intersection, repeating the first step. After the volley is done, they run around the corner, and begin their getaway. However, they do not get far. From an adjacent room spills 20 Chryssalids, in coordination with 10 from an overhead vent. The procession halts, forming a turtle formation and shredding Chryssalids on both sides. Still, more keep coming, and although the ones from the vents are destroyed the lines of the Chryssalid main wave crash into the formation. Switching to knives, each squid furiously stabs at the chinks in the shield wall, desperately staying out of the way of the guns while at the same time scrambling above and around the shields. It is not going well for the Izani, they are pulling off shrapnel blasts as fast as they can, but at such close range, they do not have the ideal effect. Drawing their knives, they start to fight back behind their shields at the visible Chryssalids.
The Chryssalids look like they have the upper tentacle (ha ha) but then from around the corner comes another detachment of twenty Izani warriors. The guns blast the squids off the melee and the rest scatter, streaking across the walls and ceilings, almost impossible to hit. After joining forces with the remaining soldiers, the new squad sends ten members to continue the rout. As they disappear around the corner, sounds of heavy fighting are heard. Taking most of the remaining troops, the sergeant rushes to the men’s aid, only to find that the Chryssalids had set up an ambush. Still, at the arrival of new forces, the Chryssalids slink back to their vents, leaving many wounded renegades as well as many dead squids. The Izani give up the chase, and return to tend their wounded, confidant that the attack is spent. Over the com-link comes the message that all waves have been disrupted, “Now comes the hard part.”
Down a ways from the squadron, Chryssalids are once again beginning to emerge. They are still pumped with adrenaline, but the flow is stopping. Soon they will crash; they need to find a safe place to sleep. But for now, they are busy. Retrieving weapons, fluid canisters, and occasionally bodies, they move much of the debris to secret places inside the walls of the ship. Some are injected with the fluid, in a couple of months a new Chryssalid warrior will com into being. When the Izani regroup, and scour the corridors once more, the walls and floor, once splattered with gore and bodies, are now less piles. The mostly intact bodies have been removed, along with all the equipment they had used.
Deep in the underbelly of the victorious starship hives of Chryssalids gather, storing their loot in unwatched places, destroying cameras and blocking humanoid access shafts. Now any attempt to purge the infestation will be met with very heavy loses. They wait with their stock piles of weapons, occasionally attempting surgical strikes on men walking alone. They infest as many as they can, commanding the Chryssalid inside to wait for the opportune time to grow. These strikes create a terror ship, with everyone constantly wary of attacks. Normally the ship would dock as soon as possible, to evacuate, but this time the Chryssalids managed to destroy the navigation computers in a large raid, causing the ship to drift in space until they manage to be found by another ship. Luckily for them, the Chryssalid attack on the communications was repulsed, and is now very heavily guarded. They can relay that they are lost, but have no way of directing ships to them. (ooc. They could use the stars, but with this level of technology, no one memorizes the layout of the galaxy. It is so huge they just use computers. Unfortunately for then, all their navigation apparatus is destroyed, including that.) The Chryssalids aboard the ship are heavily reduced, but there are enough that very few areas are truly secure. Safe houses are established, where traveling troops rest for the nights. They sleep with guard, and these place’s vents are blocked, so that no intrusion is possible.
A month passes, then two months. Now the Chryssalid eggs hatch in all the infested bodies. The Izani forces are weakened, but are still strong enough to stop an all-out attack from the Chryssalids, even with their new hatches. However, the Chryssalids have not lost all communications or navigation systems. They had brought equipment with them, anticipating this very same outcome. At two and a half months the Chryssalids launch their attack. Another fleet comes within range and boards the Izani ship. Slightly less size than the first fleet, this one has less resistance getting closer in, as many of the weapons systems are disabled from the last attack. (ooc. Chryssalid starships are generally on the smallish size, but come in massive amounts) once again the invaders have to hold out from the wave of squids, but this time there is a civil war going on inside.
The Chryssalids previously inside have massed up into several groups, and attacked from behind lines. Quickly realizing their precarious position, the remaining forces of Izani retreat to the command deck, and make a last stand there. They are desperately trying to repair the navigational devices of their ship, while holding out against Chryssalid probes. The Chryssalids are scouring the whole ship before their last attack. They do not want anything unexpected to happen, as well as collecting equipment that they might be able to use. The Renegades know they are in the eye of the storm, and make the most of it, setting up defensive positions on all the corridors leading to their last safe haven. The Chryssalids know of this, as they periodically scout the defenses of the enemy.
Soon the Chryssalids are ready, but before the attack starts, they pose an offer of surrender to the remaining Izani troops. Ten minutes pass. The remaining Renegades are in deep debate. Finally, they sound out, “We do not trust you. After the unjust attack on our ship, we have little faith that you will not kill us outright. Send a representative, to work out a compromise. We are not going to relinquish our weapons. If this means fighting to our deaths, and it probably will, we will try our hardest to cripple your force here ere we go.” The Chryssalids responded that the total damage done to their forces will all regrow within three months, so it would be the wiser of the two options to surrender now.
Delegates from both sides meet, and they work out a compromise. Chryssalid warriors withdraw, leaving a generous passageway for the Izani. They, in turn, march along the open path, cautious, with their weapons at the ready. They slowly make their way to the escape pods along the side of the ship and board them. All the Chryssalid fleet moves silently to the other side, and backs far enough away. When the Izani have made certain that their path to the planet is safe, they launch their ships off into the void. Soon they will crash-land on the planet, and eventually make their way back to Izani lines with the story of the Chryssalid humanitarianism. They Chryssalids move in again, linking ships and disappearing back behind their own lines. They captured this ship, with more losses than expected, but also with the added benefit of boosting their appearance.
Many times the Chryssalids succeed to capture vessels on their first try; this was created to show you the multiple aspects of their invasion. Later I plan to add one about the Ship warfare.

Chryssalids fight in waves, as previously seen, but then peter out into raiding missions. Each attack is coordinated by one queen, and numbers about 1,002,000 personnel. Of that, 1000 are spies, and 1000 are workers. The other million are brute warriors. The queen in charge of this massive force doesn’t direct individuals, she mainly acts as a player in a RTS game, and helps the squads cooperate. She can see the whole picture, and uses this to help them work more efficiently. She also directs the objectiveds of the troops, telling them where they should head towards, or when to stop. There have been cases where the queen directed in what type of weapon to predominantly use, but those are rare, and microing greater than that is almost never seen.

The Queen theoretically could control more troops, but this number has proven in the past to be the ideal number for one queen to command.

Unlike other races, The Queen as a commander does not fight, and devotes all of her energy into working with the troops, so much so that she is almost oblivious to the surroundings. While assassination attempts are much sought after by the opposing force (as the army would dissolve into chaos) the queen can pay more attention to herself, and usually manage to slip away. Unfortunately, this causes a lapse in concentration, and, to use the same analogy, it’s as if you had to balance a ball while playing a video game. So, one could say that assassination attempts are still successful, even though they usually do not reach their full potential.

The worker class is there for their technical skills, and their construction skills, because the Chryssalids have learned their lesson that that can come in very handy. They do not participate in the actual fight, but are essential in the aftermath. They can seal corridors, reinforce strategic walls, and even construct not-to-high-tech appliances on the battlefield.
