At one point.. The police were respected and loved members of the community.

Someone you nodded to as you walked down the street. They helped the people, and were there to serve and protect.

But thats all changed now.. The police are there to make money from traffic tickets.. So rather then serving and protecting their extorting money from people who drive 7 miles per hour over the limit.. How does that protect people?

7 miles over? thats not going to cause any problems.. 42 rather then 35 isn't going to be dangerous.

But no, the cops now make money for each ticket they write, and have a quota they have to reach each month..

They are also equipped with tazers and can be a little trigger happy with them. If you try and discuss your ticket, or disagree with the officer in any way you could be in danger of being tazed..

Now people are terrified of the police. And seething hatred felt towards them.. People slow down and get nervous when they see a cop car.. "am i doing anything wrong?? man i hope i don't get a ticket"

Also you never know what the cop will stick you with.. He could give you some otherworldly complete bullshit think with that ticket.. If you talk back or defend yourself will you get arrested? Will they antagonize you or threaten you?

The new persona of the police is someone to be scared of.. They are so focused with ticket writing that when it comes time to actually protect someone.. they drop the ball.. I know of several people who were released after assault charges.. They were released and let out on the streets during the trial!

There's only so much the people of this country will stand for before we reach the breaking point..

How do you view the police?

There are some police that you can trust, but on my personal view, I do not like the police that much.
I think they abuse their power way too much.
And it seems nowadays, they are more racist than anything.

The only problems I have had with them was when I thought someone had broke into the house cause the alarm just went off.
I got scared and called the police; took them about an hour to get to my house.
I could have been dead by then if someone really did break in.

Yeah their really bad around here..

They'll even tail gate people sometimes and try and scare them into making a mistake...

They can only keep doing it for so long before people say i've had enough..

And downstate in detroit is heading for complete collapse..

It does take about an hour for any emergency officials to get on the scene.

I've had pretty good luck though, i have never gotten a ticket. And i usually get some pretty nice cops.

Our fire dept is absolutely amazing though. We had a fire at my house and the were so respectful. And went way out of their way to reduce water damage, and were very careful with everything in our house.

I love em.

I've never had an issue with the police. Every one I've met has always been really nice. I think part of the problem is that we've heard so much bad press about the police in the last few years. Not all of them are like that. And really, things change. Ten years ago, you wouldn't see a huge uproar about someone being tazored but now we're more informed about the physical effects. Does that mean that the police are horrible for carrying tazors? No. It means that we should be doing more research about the weapons that we release. The police are only responsible for so much.

As for issuing people a ticket who are 7 miles over the speed limit, well, according to google, that would be about 11km and even though it seems "silly", it's their job to enforce the law. Yeah, it would make more sense to just give a warning and tell them to slow down but their job is to enforce the law, no matter how petty or small it may seem. If they have a quota of speeding tickets to fill each month, then that is a problem with their superiors, not the police themselves. They do what they're told and if they're told that they have to issue 50 speeding tickets a month, then they do it. They're not directly responsible for the law.

I really think that people need to realize that the police are people just like them, doing a job. They're not the ones who are in charge of making laws or what weapons they carry. They take orders just like everyone else. And I'm really sick of people treating them like dirt. We don't live in ******** China, okay. The police don't randomly kidnap journalists and stick them in jail until the government can remove their organs to sell on the black market. They have a hard job and they do the best they can. Not all police are violent psychos just like not all politicians are money-grubbing liars.

I think it's time that the average person stop generalizing and making blanket statements about the people who help run their country. Saying that the police abuse their authority isn't helping anything. If these people actually believed this and were actually upset by it and wanted to change it, they would. But just making statements like this without stating facts is cowardly.

The problem here is that the governor put the police on a quota. they have to write a certain amount of tickets a month..

Also the primary problem is.. Is that the police are SO focused on traffic violations (which doesn't protect anyone... thats just the police making money) And not all police are bad. The ones in this area will tailgate you to try and scare you into making a mistake.. (really) They'll pull people over who have a record of tickets even if they didn't do anything wrong to see if maybe they have something illegal in their car they can pick up on.

They are rude, harassing, to busy writing tickets.. Just the stuff that i know of.. Their rampant incompetence allowed someone who committed insurance fraud off the hook. Assault, well he got off for no real reason.. they had all the evidence, they let him stay outside of jail during the trial and he bailed went out of state.. he had a huge criminal record of assault, suspected rape, and even a suspected murder charge and they let him out of jail during the trail... Now he's out and in some other state. Also if you're house gets broken into, you get mugged, you need to file a restraining order, whatever.. They'll go slow.. treat you like s**t..

They enforce the worthless laws.. And the laws that protect people they drop the ball on...

Its so bad it actually damages tourism.. Michigan police are just awful (i tend to have better luck with the state police around here then the city though.)

i despise our police dept.. as well as every single person i talk to...

But our fire dept is absolutely incredible. I love those guys. :3 So that's a plus.

Also they give traffic tickets out for 1 to 5 mph over now... And they cut the amount of points you can have on your license in half without telling anyone. they change traffic laws without telling anyone.

I don't just say i hate the police because i got a ticket.. (which i've never gotten before) I hate the police (around here) because they are abusing their authority, spitting on their oath and causing people to actually be SCARED of them.. People here are scared of the police.. because they don't think that they'll help them.. and are scared that they'll slap other worldly charges on them...

Not every cop here is bad.. I have met a few nice ones.. But they are sadly far outnumbered by young douche bag jocks who became cops so that they could do whatever the hell they wanted.. Michigan is most likely going to break out in riots over their incredibly despicable police force..

I REALLY hope not all of this is true because that sounds horrible. And it makes me happy, yet again, that I live in Canada. I wonder if there's any way that the people who live there could get the govenor to remove the quota requirements? Putting requirements on things like that causes people to look for traffic violations, no matter how miniscule. It's really just common sense.

I don't really understand the license points? Is it an America only thing or what? Maybe I just haven't heard about it since I don't drive. It sounds like it's out of The Fifth Element though!

Not to be argumentative but a lot of this does seem like anecdata and that can't really be used as the foundation of such a damning opinion on the police force. I feel like if this were happening all the time, there would be punishment for the officers involved. Then again, I'm speaking with knowledge of Canada's police force and how things work here. They do investigations into anything the police do if there's any slight chance of an officer being at fault.
