Speechless

Ed dragged himself up yet another flight of stairs towards his and Al's room. Mustang was merciless today wanting to know every last detail of his latest expedition. He had already gone over it twice when Hawkeye came in wanting to record it onto paper for later reference. He didn't mind it so much when she asked him but the Colonel...as far as Ed was concerned, the Colonel b*****d better sleep with one eye open until he left again.

Outside his dorm room, Ed paused for a second when he heard muffled voices from inside. He could make out his brother's voice but the other one was too quiet to understand what was being said. Ed went to open the door when his brother cracked it open slightly and looked down at him.

"Brother!" Al stated sheepishly, "I wasn't expecting you home so soon."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I should have been back hours ago. Who the hell was just in here with you?"

"In here...? No one." Al looked around then looked back as innocent as he could. "I was here all alone."

"Uh-huh. Listen Al, I'm not in the mood for games right now. I'm tired. I want some sleep." Ed pushed past his brother and into the room.

"Wait Brother-!"

Before he could stop his brother from going in any farther, Ed stormed back out holding a small gray kitten by the scruff of it's neck.

"WHAT IS THIS DOING HERE?!" Ed demanded and shoved the cat into his brother face.

The cat mewed pitifully and Al scooped it up holding it like a baby. "But he is so small and it's cold outside. I couldn't let him stay on the street."

Ed mellowed somewhat when the cat and Al stared at him with puppy dog eyes. He reached out a tentative hand and scratched the cat behind its ears with his human hand.

"You know we can't keep pets, Al, because we need to travel for information on the Philosopher's Stone. And besides, you don't even have a name for him."

"We can get Mr. Fury and Mr. Havoc to watch him. And I do have a name for him," If a giant suit of armor could beam happily, Al did at that moment. "His name is Mr. Mustang."

Ed stiffened and clenched his automail fist. "Why the hell are you calling it that?"

"Because you seem to like him." Al replied happily and went back into the room to finish feeding Mr. Mustang.

Ed was dumbstruck until he realized the hidden meaning behind his little brother's words. For minutes afterwards, several people looked out into the hallway from their rooms to watch the small alchemist go on about brothers, Colonel Bastards, and cats being Satan's spawn.

------

Mustang stopped and glanced into a cafe filled with it usual Friday night customers. He could see spots of blue uniform among the patrons showing that this shop was popular among the men and women of the military. He pulled the collar of his trench coat up a bit higher to block out the sudden chill in the air when he sneezed. Looking around, he saw nothing that would cause him to sneeze.

He continued walking when a ball of fur rushed around corner and hurled itself at him. He caught it and looked at it. The cat he held glanced up at him and licked his face. Mustang sneezed again.

"Look Havoc! I told you he would find Mustang. Oh, but it sounds like Mr. Mustang has a cold."

Mustang shook his head no; then realized no one would see it. It isn't a cold; people are just talking about me lately.

"You do not need another pet to take care of. Go get Ed back, Fury, before the Colonel fries him to a crisp." Havoc's voice answered.

"He wouldn't do that." Fury smiled up at Havoc when he put his arm around his around his shoulders. They turned the corner to where Mustang was standing and Fury took the orange tabby from the speechless Colonel's arms. "See he likes cats."

Mustang blinked a few times in shock. One, Havoc and Fury were hugging. Not that it was that much of a surprise, those two were hiding something for weeks; even the thick headed Ed noticed something was up. To him, it was about ******** time. Maybe now Hawkeye would stop bugging him to do something about his subordinates. But the second thing was the most surprising of all; what they named the cat.

Ed.

Fury hugged the cat to his chest and then wrapped his coat around both of them to keep it warm.

When the shock wore off he rounded on Havoc because Fury was too busy making sure his cat was alright. Roy swore and asked why they named the cat Ed.

Fury grinned and answered for him. "Because, Colonel Sir, they like you. And it seems to go both ways."

And for a second time that day, Roy Mustang Colonel of the Army and the Flame Alchemist was speechless.
