Meandering through the crisp winter air, Gwen enjoyed the suburban atmosphere of the homes around her. They all had the same general appearance, with little distinctive touches that must have had their owners feeling like their yard was unique, special. This one had lawn gnomes guarding a garden of pink petunias, the next had a bench painted red, white, and blue, overlooking a small fountain featuring a bald eagle, water tinkling down from it's proud beak. On and on the yards went, giving their neighbors and Gwen a vague idea of what their personalities might be like when they're not wasting away behind a desk or running mindless errands. Gwen sighed heavily...And yet, these people made an honest living. They probably had families and birthday parties and dates. Gwen had no one. All she had was an abandoned flat in Chinatown to call home. Smiling pleasantly, as if she belonged with the normal people in this normal neighborhood, Gwen strolled along, innocently casing for the perfect house to rob.

3:17 in the morning noted Gwen as she passed the microwave. It was a lovely kitchen, all light blues and purples, and spotlessly clean to boot. It belonged to the Nicolsons, a fifty-something year old couple whose children had begun their own lives, allowing their parents to relax after the long years of child rearing. Their current form of relaxation was taking cruises, one of which they were on now, probably having a wonderful time in the Keys or Cozumel.
Gwen had learned this from Reggie Davis, an ex-army officer with an English bulldog and the Nicolsons across-the-street neighbor. Older men always noticed Gwen, and she was fond of them as well. They were friendly, and loved talking about everything, and Gwen really didn't mind the extended human contact. Reggie had pretended to lose hold of Admiral, his bulldog, and come up smiling to Gwen while she scratched the dog's stomach.
An hour of bright smiles and bad jokes later, Gwen had learned that Ms. Olsen down the street had a bad hip, that little Gerry Wright had gotten a dalmation puppy, and that the Nicolsons were on a two week cruise out of Miami. The elderly didn't leave their homes often, and dogs were out of the question, so Gwen decided to visit the Nicolsons' home later that night.
Sliding open a window at the back of the house, Gwen smiled, remembering how happy Reggie had been to have someone to talk to. Gwen had enjoyed herself too. Crawling stealthily out the window, Gwen reached back in for her backpack. It had been a great house to rob. Gwen had an assortment of fruit, which would have gone bad anyways, some cans of Spaghettio's and boxes of Kraft, sandwich meats and cheeses, and a few frozen dinners and pints of ice cream in her insulated lunchbox. She also had some money, which she had found hidden in a vase, and a few pieces of jewelry.
Although she felt a small pang of guilt for stealing from the Nicolsons, the truth was that she had left a lot more than most people would. She hadn't even taken the whole amount of money in the vase. Who knows? Maybe they were saving for their next cruise. Honestly, they probably wouldn't even notice. The things that most people took for granted, Gwen had to steal to survive. Pulling her pack on and shutting the window securely, Gwen headed out of the nice suburban neighborhood, giving a quick wave to Reggie's dark house, and headed towards her home in the ghettos of Chinatown.
