I have to admit, I don't have the dedication to balance stats, natures, strengths, and all that. I build my teams based primarily on element and how often I've used the Pokemon in prior teams. I use my starters as tanks until the Pokes I want are strong enough to manage on their own, and then set the starter aside to build full custom teams.
I've also finally come to the realization that I should check which Pokemon learn which HMs before I put my team together, so I've now got teams planned out that require no more than one side Poke to cover for HMs necessary to get through Victory Road. I do have one team in planning with no Pokes who can learn Fly, but I can manage well enough without it.
And I've long since come to terms with my habit of getting my a** kicked by the Elite 4 with custom team plan-fail xd

I start off by looking at what pokemon I like, how well they would theoretically fit into a team, and go from there.

I find a pokemon or two that I like, and for sure want in the team. (Example, Gengar) Then I decide whether I want all of the other pokemon to be the same type as the afformentioned pokemon, the Same theme, ( Like making a team of Ghost, Dark, Poison and Psychic, [They just seem to mix well for me]) or if I want it to be a team that would be ideal for serious battling, with a variety of types. The first two options provide more for "Backstory", but the third one is obviously much more useful.
In the end, I can never decide, and out of frustration, stop playing for a week. gonk

Hufflepuffs In the end, I can never decide, and out of frustration, stop playing for a week. gonk Ahaha xd I've stopped playing out of frustration before. Now I'm planning my teams out in advance... I've got like five index cards with teams planned out, including my player name, which HMs to teach what Pokes, and some even have gender listed. I wanted to make an all-female Eeveelution team with a male Honchkrow xd but then I'd be missing vital HMs sweatdrop But I do plan to make teams at some point with each generations' Eeveelutions.

I catch pokemon that are strong or will become strong to get through the storyline and only worry about EVs afterwards.

When building a team, I basically rely on covering as much types as I can. I don't really do that thing with the natures and the EVs. . . I just like it simple.

just put it in your mouth I wing it but try to never get the same poke that I used last game. I've got FireRed and my girlfriend has LeafGreen - I'm thinking of borrowing her game so I can get a couple Pokes that aren't in mine xd I'm also breeding up eggs from parents I've traded in for my next team in Platinum - still need something from the Magmar chain, though.

When it comes to in-game teams, I usually just use Pokémon that I like, and then subsequently Pokémon that I haven't used before (like in Gold, I used Pidgeot, so in Silver I used Fearrow). For in-game teams, I don't worry at all about IVs/EVs/proper movesets, because the NPCs don't take that much effort to beat.
But for competitive battle, I tend to use strong Pokémon that I also like, or at least am neutral to. Like Salamence, love the thing. Metagross? Not so much, but I'll still use it. But Rypherior? It may be strong, but it's ugly as hell, so no thanks. I'm going to be spending some time training these guys, so I want them to be enjoyable to look at for hours on end. I also tend to favor Goodstuffs over specific strategies, so my com.bat teams tend to be a mishmash of OUs (and some UUs/Ubers) that can stand on their own.

When it comes down to it, I usually try to expand a wide varitey of different types of Pokemon with different types of attacks so that I'm put at a semi-advantage (though in some cases I can be put into a corner) and yes I LOVE to breed my favorite Pokemon and have their EV's perfectly in place because that's just me. I also hate legendary Pokemon just because.

For in-game teams I generally pick out the Pokemon I like, and ones I need to have an advantange. Most of the time, I like to do it in advance, though sometimes I'll run into a Pokemon and think: Oh! Haven't used that one before! Wonder what it's like! biggrin I've already started planning out my HG/SS team... sweatdrop

Hey, now. Grass is pretty freakin awesome, considering it's strong against ALMOST all other types. Well, a lot anyways. Like electric, water, ground, rock, metal, fighting, etc. Even though fire is my favorite type, grass is probably of the strongEST. 3nodding heart
