In its solemn breath you can feel the questioning of the far distance beyond seeing and knowing.

'Let me care for you with all my heart.'

Zhu MeiLin

However she also longs to take her own path in life; in choosing accept a lotus as her duty, MeiLin has indeed found a way to annul her arranged marriage and dedicate herself to something she adores with all her heart. Very open-minded; she doesn’t fear other cultures like her father does and is willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

MeiLin tries hard not to hurt anybodies feelings. Soft-spoken, she has a giving nature. But beyond her shy, caring smile, there is also a strong willed girl who can withstand the worst of situations with her strong heart.

The arms of the forest reach forever into ampleness, into emptiness, until the pagoda at the wrist grows and is full of prophesy.

'Why are you so special?"

Zhu Ce

Age: 10

She was more of a mother to him that their real mother ever was and will often by found fighting for MeiLin’s honour if anybody dares mention her strange ‘habits’ or ‘friends’.

He puts on a very superior front, demanding things from others and making a nuisance but in his heart he means well. When others misunderstand his intentions he becomes moody and belligerent, retreating to his own little world that only MeiLin can reach. While he doesn’t like Song Tzue arrival at all, he is glad his sister no longer has to leave and get married.

The Ties that Bind Us

MeiLin’s Relationships

Lien Si: Whether as a child or a young man, MeiLin adores Lien Si. He brings out a motherly side of her where all she wants to do is stroke his hair and cuddle him. However she knows to respect his space and settles from admiring him quietly. It’s clear to her that he is in some way a very mystical being, but has never felt the need to mention it.

Hu Muoh Li: MeiLin finds the doctor charming and is quite happy to spend long hours talking with him over a cup of tea. She respects his knowledge and if she ever has any troubles he would be the first person she would come to for advice.

Song Tzue: This treasured lotus child has become MeiLin’s reason for being. She adores Song Tzue with all her heart, doting upon the young girl. She considers the pine her daughter and worries constantly about her strong willed nature getting her into trouble.

Song Tzue’s Relationships

MeiLin: Song Tzue thinks MeiLin worries too much, but Song Tzue loves her deeply. She would protect her gentle mother from any harm, even if she doesn’t quite understand why the young woman needs to be so proper all the time.

Ce: Song Tzue doesn’t really like Ce at all. She tolerates the boy, both amused and annoyed by his jealous nature. It’s hard not to press his buttons; he’s just so easy to anger and his reactions are always quite funny. However if he doesn’t stop stealing her comb he’s going to get a wholloping.

Bai Mei: As soon as she saw him, Song Tzue knew Bai Mei belonged to her. He is somebody she feels close to even after just a moment together. She’s ready to stick by him as a friend through thick and thin, to protect him from any harm.

Jing Ling: The Pine doesn’t have much to say about him; he’s talented at making things and he seems nice enough, she just hopes he takes good care of Bai Mei when she can’t.

Yoru: Another child MeiLin feels the oddest bond too.

Rebirth

Each morning when MeiLin woke up she would sit beside her lotus. As the sun only just began to rise she would burn fresh incense and open the window so that the breeze could ruffle through the soft petals. This gift from Lien Si had become her most highly treasured object and she found great joy in simply watching it.

As soon as she had walked in with it; a moody Ce at her heels, her mother had named it as something divine. The often flighty woman was prone to visiting fortune tellers and spoke often of the messages she got in the wind. Whether she truly got messages or not, she had immediately gone into a flowery speech about MeiLin duty to the gods.

While her father, Cao, was not amused by a glowing lotus, he had chosen to turn a blind eye to her gift rather than argue the point with his wife. For now, thoughts of marriage had been pushed aside. MeiLin knew it wouldn’t last, but at least she could a few more months of freedom.

One particular morning MeiLin woke up with a shiver. She lifted a hand to rub her eyes, thick black hair falling across her bare shoulder as she sat up. Judging by the chill in the room the window had been left open. Pulling her blanket up around her shoulders MeiLin shifted to look towards the window, distinctly recalling having closed it the night before.

She froze like a startled deer at what was before her.

A child sat on the windowsill staring outside with a strange and distant expression. It didn’t move and so MeiLin took some time to study it. There was no clear gender; it seemed to straddle the line between both male and female. Long green hair flowed down its back and when it finally turned, brown eyes took her in with one quick glance. The face of this creature was both strong and beautiful.

MeiLin relaxed, the scent of pine in the air, and smiled. She brushed a lock of hair from her face and beckoned the child over. It came with halting steps and as soon as she could MeiLin reached out, capturing the child in her arms and pulling it to her chest. With the blanket around them both, MeiLin tried to warm the child’s cold body.

She knew instinctively what this being was, what it had been and that she was destined to care for it.

-~-

Later that morning MeiLin was humming as she tied the child’s hair up with a ribbon. It had already been dressed in some of Ce’s clothing, him being the only one in the house whose clothes would fit the child. “There we go. You look lovely.”

The child turned its head a bit and smiled, lifting a hand to pat its hair. So far it had not said a word, but the vague look in its eyes was gone. It had been replaced with an almost uncanny alertness.

“You’re going to need a name.” MeiLin wanted to have something to call the child before she revealed it to her parents. “Let me think, hm... well, I suppose Song makes sense. But it needs something else.”

“Tzue.”

“Oh!” MeiLin blinked and then gave a sweet giggle. “That sounds nice. You have a lovely voice Song Tzue; you should speak some more.”

The child only smiled.

“Maybe later, then?”

-~-

A lotus turning into a child was no everyday occurrence. Zhu Cao was forced to accept it as something important. It didn’t take long for him to start bragging to his various business partners about how his daughter was chosen by the gods. MeiLin found such talk extremely embarrassing but she didn’t dissuade him from such talk, knowing that while he thought she was special, he wouldn’t consider marrying her off.

Like a mother with a new baby, MeiLin didn’t leave home for the first week of Song Tzue’s ‘birth’. They kept mostly to her room and the gardens, getting used to being together. MeiLin wanted to keep the lotus child to herself for a while, no matter how selfish it seemed.

Not that her wishes kept Ce out when he wanted attention.

“I don’t like you.”

“I don’t like you either.” Song Tzue didn’t even bother looking up from the paper MeiLin was covering in calligraphy.

“Well, I don’t like you more!”

“Be quiet.”

“Both of you stop it.” MeiLin chided them both, giving Ce an extra frown for good measure.

Ce pulled his knees up to his chest and went into extra grumpy mode. “Are you even a boy or a girl? It’s creepy.”

Song Tzue stared steadily at Ce until the boy looked in a different direction. Tzue huffed in triumph. “Neither.”

“You have to be a boy or girl! Only worms can be its!” He moved forward suddenly, kicking out a leg and knocking over the ink well, spilling it across both the paper and the floor.

MeiLin sighed. “Oh Ce.”

Song Tzue only laughed.

Hold Back the Snow

With the winter came that uneasy feeling of something long lost; a story of regret that she could not remember. This was her second snow and as she watched it fall; the soft flakes gently coming to rest on her outstretched hand and melting away, Song Tzue embraced it was a sigh. It wasn’t in her nature to simply accept feeling of uncertainty, but this time she had a trick of up her sleeve. This time she had Bai Mei and Yoru. They were a part of her. They were something special and only when she was with them; did she have a sense of completeness. What she had lost; had come back to her in them. Just the thought of them was enough to ease any inner turmoil.

Song Tzue closed the door against the cold and stepped back into the room. A pot of tea was steeping on the table and she sat down on a cushion before it, gently touching the rim of a nearby teacup. This was a rather surprising little hobby for the lotus girl. For she was really not much of a girl at all. She was brash and arrogant, ready to use her fists to protect her friends and generally was not interested in dressing up or primping her hair.

Still, she considered herself female. Even if she hadn’t modelled herself off MeiLin’s gentle demeanour, Song Tzue had taken on the gender. When she had first arrived in this world, new but quickly learning, already understanding many things, there had been the Zhu family. Song Tzue had quickly discovered a disdain for the men who ruled the house and even though she had absorbed some of their superiority; she didn’t not want to be considered one of them. Ce and his father were both rude and stupid.

No, she was certainly female.

The aroma of the tea, a special blend she herself had dried and mixed filled the room. Song Tzue gently picked up the teapot and poured herself a cup. Tea was lovely and was far more intricate than people gave it credit. So many soft flavours. It could be terribly bitter, but if done right, the taste would relax the body and leave a tingle on the tongue. This is could be feminine for. Enjoying tea she would give a rare, smile of girlish delight.

Some day she would invite Bai Mei and Yoru to live with her; and they could drink tea and forget the snow forever more.

Truth

It had taken Song Tzue a long time to understand.

The day was nearly over, the Pine girl dressed lightly despite the cold. Her expression was troubled as she stared down at the frozen corpse. Her breath came out in a little cloud and she shivered, not from the cold but from the unfortunate realisation that had been slowly creeping up on her throughout the months.

Song Tzue had always believed that you created your own path; nobody could rule you but yourself. She was naturally stubborn and strong; a pine tree refusing to bow down to the strongest of winds. It was that unfortunate truth that it wasn’t that way for everyone. Of course she had known there were those out there with weaker personalities and people born into poverty; but surely if they strived enough, that could change? Apparently not. Life; it seemed, was cruel, and not everyone could win against it.

The body at her feet was that of a young girl; skinny and now pale blue with death. Song Tzue vaguely wondered if this child would be missed. Would anyone in the world remember her and wonder where she had gone? The lotus child tightened her hand into a fist; lips spread into a thin, sad line. She had berated that boy she and MeiLin had met for not running away from a place he hated, but if he had, he would most likely have ended up like this.

She had been lucky. She had been born into a wealthy home with a mother who adored her. Anything she wanted; she only needed to ask. If she had instead come to life somewhere else, somewhere violent and desperate, would she have been weak? No. Even then she would rather fight and die then roll over and let herself simply fade away from existence. To Song Tzue, the idea of life was important. Especially her own.

She was very lucky, Song Tzue now understood, in not only her world but for the very core of her self. Those who were weaker would continue to fall by the wayside. It was sad, but that was the way it was. She felt suddenly cold and turned abruptly to walk away from the corpse. There were those in her life that certainly weren’t as tough as she was. So it would be her job to protect her friends and family, the people she loved, to make sure they didn’t have to be too strong. They could be just the way they were; gentle and kind, and she would keep them safe.
