Noticed that the guild doesn't have a thread devoted to discussion of the wildlife of Pandora, or the humans technology. well, that changes now. feel free to post about whatever you want about Pandoran wildlife, Sky People tech, or anything else related. Oh, and being critical is acceptable; outright nastiness is not. that aside, let the discussion.....begin!

I say we start out with the Avatar program! As in the giant caskets that let Jake, norm, and grace use their avatars.

I'm intrigued by what the air content is. And also why the trees look like trees, but there is apparently no oxygen.

I should probably read around and find the info, I'm sure it's out there somewhere. Has anyone read anything on it?

According to Pandorapeia, with regards to the trees, there is oxygen in the atmosphere. the atmosphere is thicker than on earth. its the prescenece of hydrogen sulphide and other gases ( it doesn't say what) that make it toxic to humans. and I think the Avatar program would be a great place to start this thread! nice to see people are interested... anywho, anyone find that the link pods seem to be arirtight, yet they are not, as we see with jake when quaritch ( I though the colonel was named "Parch" because he'd never really intoduced as colonel so and so, its just from what trudy and jake say that you learn his name) smashes the window of the link module a bit strange?.....big oversight there I think.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't think it would be possible for the linkpods to be airtight. For starters, it would ruin the Neytiri saving human Jake scene. It wouldn't make sense for them to be airtight, without some kind of external air source. Which would just make it cost more. I presume they have some kind of air flow thing going on though. I wouldn't want to be in a box like that, that didn't have atleast air vents.

Agreed. feel too much like you're in a casket if it didn't. I'm wondering how long you can stay in link to your avatar. since your, essentially, downloaded into the Avatar, you wouldn't notice anything happening to your own body unless its extreme ( like the scene were the Colonel almost kills jake, and he pops out of link because he;s choking on pandoras air) right? the part were after jake comes out of link after meeting the Na'vi makes me think that theres actual pyhsical effects to staying that long in link, since he's a little comatose at first.

I'm actually in the process of creating a list of all creatures seen in the movie, however I've been busy with lots of things lately, so it's not ready to be moved to this subforum sad

I found a drawing of the link system and it clearly labeled exhaust vents and intake vents. Since the humans are not hooked up to a breathing apparatus it cant be airtight. They spend hours in there and if they spent hours in an airtight container... it would make you choke. Im glad other people are interested in the subelties of the movie. Also a friend of mine made a good point. At the end you see Norm in human form when the humans are on their forced retreat, but a mere seconds later you see Norm as his Na'vi alternate. Did he get back in the link in that momentary timelapse?

I don't think it was norm...I think that it was one of the other Avatar guys....remember when jake is using his Avatar at first, you see at least a dozen of them. Norms Avatar died, I'm pretty sure; hence the scene were it shows him popping out of his pod looking like crap ( and running...no clue why he would be running AWAY from the defensible building...). and he was hit across the chest with at least half a dozen rounds, just like Tsu'tey....I'm wondering if any of the other Avatar guys took the option of permenantly downloading into their bodies like jake does.

I thought the mecha-things that the Sky People used (I call them Transformers xp ) were pretty cool. It seems like we already have all the technology needed to make something like that. Wasn't there a controller in the form of a glove for nintendo like... 15 years ago? The only challenge would be making a robot that walks like a human.

I wonder if they did that, too. It would be difficult to continue using the casket-things after all the other humans left, but I don't think everyone makes it when they do what Jake did, since they have to pass through the eye of Eywa. (Of course Grace didn't make it, but that's cause she had a fatal wound.)

See the only problem with that is that it was a spiritual transfer not quite as easy as a download. Because Jake says there was a high degree of failure. I dont think the other Avatars had quite the connection with the na'vi. And to the earlier comment of norms avatar... it did show him dying but at the end there is a na'vi dressed just like him. The red and khaki pants. So not quite sure who that is.

Regarding the Link Pods. In the main station they were air tight (as i noticed after the second time seeing the movie) but the ones in the Hallelujah Mountains were not for more practicality.
To the question of how long you can be linked. It's like waking up from an eight hour rest. When you enter the link your original body is in a coma like state with frequent Rapid Eye Movement which would make your sleep even deeper. When you exit the link the Avatar goes into a coma like state with the same effects.
All these questions about Norm should be easily answered. When they were bringing the link station into the static area he was in his Avatar.
I will edit in a few hours

Not quite the info about norm we were looking for. At the very end... I could swear i see him standing as a Na'vi shooing the humans off. Maybe its just a different avatar with a similar clothing scheme but i could have sworn they looked alike.
