Of course, Avatar is a story about the evils of imperialism, as well as a love story, but another theme in the film is the power struggle between science, war, and money.

Grace represents science, the Colonel represents war, and Parker represents money. Each of these people seems to think he or she is in charge of the whole operation, so they come into conflict with each other quite a bit. I think it becomes obvious that Parker and money are really in charge when the Colonel has to go to Parker to get permission to begin the invasion, and Grace is helpless to stop it.

War is just a tool that they use to achieve their ultimate goal of capitalizing on the unobtanium deposit. But what role does science play?

And what does Jake Sully symbolize? Compassion? Diplomacy? The common man?

Yeah, it is a lot like when the Europeans came over to North America. That's why it's been compared to Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves. Still, there are issues in Avatar that aren't addressed in those movies.

Jake represents the common man. His work encourages war and inspires science. But the thing that drives him is money. Money gives his cause and gives him effect. It gives him a reason to start, a reason to continue, and a reason to never end. Money makes the world go 'round... as long as you let people like the na'vi be oppressed.

I believe that Jake represents the 'good' side of humainty...and like you stated...compassion. I believe that he was the purest character in the movie. Everyone had an underlying mission:to further our knowledge through science, to bring home a hefty check, and to fulfill the urge of dominance through acts of war. There was a scene in the movie where Neytiri's mother says something along the lines of 'you can not fill a cup that is already full'. Jake tells her that his cup is empty. I think this was one of the defining statements to his character. I believe that he acts through his heart which I admire

Well, money was his reason for going to Pandora in the first place, but he gave that up for love. So.. what does that mean?

[socialist]Money doesn't buy happiness.[/socialist]

[capitalist]The avenue in which he found love, the Avatar program, costed billions of dollars. He money was a necessary step on his way to happiness. It's just like retiring.[/capitalist]

I think you can go even further and get some symbolism in the fact that he was chosen for the project because of his brother. And as for oppression, the avatar program is the epitemy of oppression. Its humans forcing their will onto other beings. As for reasoning... it wasnt so much money, but a chance to start things over.

Good point there. Also, the seeds of the tree of souls are pure spirits, and they alighted on him, sending a sign that he is pure as well.

The only other movie I've seen Sam Worthington in is MacBeth, but judging from these two movies, he is a very good actor. MacBeth is also a great movie but I don't want to get off topic, lol

Personally, what I think is, is Jake is the classic problem with all spies; what's to stop them from falling in love with the people they are spying on, which is what happens to jake. Parker I think is doing what he thinks is best for RDA and humanity as a whole, because without unubtanium, Humanity cannot reach the stars, and Quarich has just gone a little nuts from the jungle, just like many soldiers did in vietnam. Anyone considered Trudy Chacon yet? she's the one whoes death really saddened me.
