I can't pick just one favourite (sorry, I'm British so you get the British spelling). It's between three titles:
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.
They're all really inspiring books!

It's very hard to narow it down to one book, but science fiction has been my favorite genre since I was very young. Have Space Suit - Will Travel is a young adult book about a boy (18 years old) who wins a space suit in a contest. He is wearing it when he gets kidnapped by some violent aliens who mean to destroy Earth. I think I read this book for the first time when I was 8 or so, and I still love it. I literally grew up with Heinlein's books...he wrote a dozen YA books, but also wrote adult SF classics like Stranger in a Strange Land and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Heinlein is definitely my favorite author. Besides fiction, he was a fiercely patriotic man, and wrote a number of nonfiction articles, some of which have helped shape my real political views.
Despite Heinlein's brilliance (I have read 39 of his books, and enjoyed them all) I have long considered my single favorite book to be Dune by Frank Herbert. It is a long, complex science fiction novel that I first read as a senior in high school (when I was 17 or 18 ). It has a truly imaginative background, as well as great characters and writing. I have read a few other of Herbert's books, and sadly none have come close to the genius of Dune, so overall I don't consider him my favorite author over Heinlein.

The Catches in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (then the two books after that in the Vampire Chronicles), The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins (I just read that and couldn't put it down) and a few more... smile
