Me and a friend of mine had a mini argument over something that was said in the commentary on the episode, "The Most Horrible Christmas Ever".

Anyway, she was saying that judging from the commentary, the show was cancelled because the staff was sick of it, and begged Nick to can it for them.

But I thought they were just kidding because they were saying that they "couldn't keep with the genius of the show", and were all laughing about it.

So do you guys have any proof whether this was serious or a joke?

I think it's a half-truth. The pressure of keeping the show up was starting to get to everyone, and so, looking back, they all say they were relieved to be done.
Of course, this is only my interpretation of the comments.

I heard that they had to have it cannceled because it was disturbing for the parents and they didn't want their kids watching it so "word" got out to many different parents who agreed and they decided that they wanted to do something about it. so they got the show canceled in time for the Christmas special to be the final episode. Its sucks to here that but I don't even know if it is true.

I heard that the ratings weren't good (probably in part to the crappy scheduling, or so I heard), and it was costing Nickelodeon more money than they were getting. I guess Nick promised them at least two full seasons--to see if the show would be popular enough more than likely--but instead they jipped Jhonen & Co. off and cut the show halfway through season two (or so I heard).

Ever since my renewed facination in Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (thanks, Bleedman gonk ), I have a feeling the "parents-thinking-the-show-is-too-disturbing" theory isn't entirely correct. Grim Adventures has quite a bit of "disturbing" humor as well, like the in the haunted tricycle episode where Billy falls off his bike and skids face-first into the cement--then looking up, revealing his torn up face (it still makes me cringe to this day). Well, anyways, despite some crude humor, the show is still airing and churning out new episodes. So, therefore, I think the ratings and cost really did have more to do in Invader Zim's cancellation.

I am done.

Yeah.. I higly doubt that the reason the show got canceled was because of the parents thinking it disturbing. Infact, my parents like the show. And every now and then, we sit around and have a few hours of laughs...
But I wouldn't doubt one bit that one of the reasons it got canceled was because of the time schechueled in. Too bad too, not even I could watch it.... >.< Only from time to time, when I had the chance to sneak out of my room.... twisted

Nick were thick enough to put it on the TV during hours of either little viewing, or better things on other channels. Also, the advertising wasn't exactly up to scratch - leaving many poor people in the dark concerning the show's existance.

But then, worst of all, Johnen doesn't even have the rights to his own creation; Viacom does! Many in the production team wanted to sell it to the cartoon network or other distributors around the world that would have made a bigger deal of Zim, but they couldn't. Viacom wanted to keep it in their gurbby hands to squeeze out every drop they could muster from the series and franchise.

And entire new series was planned involving Dib in the newly repaired Tak's ship in persuit of Zim across the universe, spending each episode or so on a different planet, until they finally reached Irk wherein the series would have ended in a feature-length series finale entitled "Invader Dib". That woulda ruled.

Damn Viacom...
