Place: An old dilapidated church in the outskirts of town. Time: Saturday at one in the morning. Scene: A friend of yours just came back from overseas and the old gang got together just for old times sake. It was all good (drinking, eating out, shopping, movies) until one of you spoke about the church that burned down when you were kids. That's when the dare to explore the place came up and how you all ended up meeting at the abandoned church at one in the morning.

Sitting on one of the rocks that in one time used to be a large and magnificent stone pillar, a girl with light brown hair that fall to her shoulders in graceful waves checked and rechecked her backpack. Slender hands covered by fingerless leather gloves searched through the tiny container for a lighter, two flashlights, extra batteries, a bright yellow scarf she bought earlier in the shopping spree, and most importantly...salt. Once all the items had been accounted for, she let out a relaxed breath. Just in case things went awry, she was indeed very prepared. Besides, if her flashlights ran out of juice, her cellphone was available as a make shift light.
Clearing her throat, the woman equipped herself with her baby blue colored backpack and stood up, facing her reckless group of friends. Just because she had mentioned that she'd seen a ghost around in these parts, they got it in to their heads to try and scare the living daylights out of themselves by coming here. Well...she was just thankful that it wasn't an abandoned hospital. She'd heard that spirits could be quite feral and really, she would rather deal with a headless priest who just wanted to show himself rather than a dead psychiatric ward patient. Choose the lesser evil so to speak...if there was really any evil to choose from.
Anyway! This lady with the slightly tanned skin and brown curly locks is named Elle. She was, out of the group of friends gathered here tonight, the one who was most sensitive out of the lot and as such, has had (if minimal) experience with spirits. And because of that minimal experiences she has had, Elle would rather be at her house reading and studying for her next exam which wasn't until after two months. Pulling her yellow jacket closer to herself, Elle made her way to the group, hoping to discourage any spirits lingering around to make contact with her.
"So! How are we going to do this? Split in to two groups or what? And what are we looking for anyway? Besides spirits and all that jazz?" she asked in good manner, trying to keep her voice calm when inside, she was a wreck of nervousness and anxiety. Everyone was accounted for. It was about time that they went inside the huge church with the broken roof, many vines, and debris littered floor.

Caitlin nibbled on the side of her lip, tasting the flavour of her watermelon and mint gloss and curled her short, perky hair around her fingers. The hairdresser had tried to give some spark to the girl to go with the new life she was entering. It hadn't worked though. Caitlin was still the same, nervous child that had left Strathfieldsaye three weeks ago. She was still a small girl with a haircut that didn't suit her. That was not to say she was physically short, far from it. "Small" was just what came to mind when people met her.
As the girl came closer, she held up the torch on her phone and peered over at the church. It seemed to loom over her, threatening her to leave the holy ground. She could almost picture it hissing foul abuse at her, and maybe it was. Maybe it was alive and only gave the appearance of a charred ruin to keep people away. Maybe the hissing wasn't the sound of grass in the breeze but whispers of the dead. Hadn't the others just said the place was haunted? Why were they going there if that was true? What if something happened while they were down there? Ghosts were bad. Very bad. They belonged in ghost stories told by schoolgirls with torches.
The newcomer was unsure whether she thought it was a trick or not, she was the new kid after all. Maybe they were testing her, you know, seeing if she was cool enough to be part of their group. Maybe... maybe she was thinking about too many maybes.
She wandered over to Elle and tried to guess what she was thinking. Caitlin had only been in classes for a week and already it seemed like Elle was the most intelligent of the group. She'd tell her if there was anything to worry about. After a deep breath, Cailtin asked, 'um, Elle. Are there really ghosts in the church? I mean, they're not real, right?'

"What silly question! We'll split in to two groups of course!" Mina, the self-appointed group leader, answered with a snort, "It makes things easier to explore and scarier too." She wiggled her fingers in some macabre dance. Elle supposed that it was supposed to be a scary gesture but all she could think about was the 'spirit fingers' bit on TV (no pun intended) and she threw her head back and laughed. Mina rolled her eyes and flipped her golden hair over her shoulder. Honestly. It was so difficult to scare that girl. Maybe it was because Elle had experienced being haunted by real spirits before that something as mundane as splitting in to two groups and wiggling her fingers combined with a look that was part demonic and part silly (or at least that was what she was aiming for) held absolutely no comparison.
Whatever.
"Alright! We're splitting in to two groups. Aja, you're with me..."
And there went the groupings. Elle listened intently before snickering as she was paired with Melissa, Caitlin, and two others whose names she still couldn't remember. They were new too...or at least, she'd never encountered them before.
'um, Elle. Are there really ghosts in the church? I mean, they're not real, right?'
What was this? Their new friend was a non-believer?
"You're a non-believer?!" Elle let out a mock gasp, trying to act like it was a great sin to not believe in ghosts. She turned her head to face Cait, her expression was one of pure shock and horror but her eyes were crinkled and twinkling with mischief. Whoever said she was a straight A student with a stick up her arse was a liar and should be sent to deepest parts of hell. She let the look last for a few more seconds for added effects before she grinned and ruffled the kid's hair.
"I've seen a ghost here before but I don't know if it was a ghost or just someone who wanted to visit this place. I guess that's why Mina wants to check the place out but in my personal opinion, I believe in ghosts. They've visited me countless times before but really. It's difficult to explain if you haven't experienced the things that I have. Maybe this trip will alter your perception of the world ya?"
"Yo people! It's about time we get started. You guys have everything you need? It's not too late to turn back!" Mina said and did that spirit fingers again, trying to scare the others to running away. Elle simply rolled her eyes. As if people would be scared by something so lame (and funny) as that.
"Come on then Cait. Let's go hunt some ghosts," she said and grinned as she led the way inside, trying to look confident and in control when all she wanted was to back away and never return...especially when she felt a chill run down her spine when she passed the double doors. Immediately, she grabbed one flashlight and illuminated the way ahead for her group. She whistled, trying to make light of the situation. "Watch your step you guys. There might be broken glasses on the ground so don't want to trip. And did you know that evil spirits love the scent of blood?" The last part was made as an off-hand comment but it was an important piece of information for the others...meaning don't injure yourself.
