Q? Was:

Antivirus software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (issues of concern)http://www.semiologic.com/2005/02/24...o-help-at-all/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antivirus

What do you think?

Of course for the average and uninformed user a AV is kind of the gadget that will stop you from speeding, but for those who are informed, sensible and adopt the common sense approach when accessing the www, are these kind of products really needed?

If needed is a real-time protection really required?

I am asking this because in all this time I used computers (around 10 years) I never caught a single virus. Of course I had issues in the past but they were more spyware related, and for these different applications are needed (specific antispyware programs).

Answear:

Sometimes you don't even realize that you have been infected with a virus.. Using PC's 10 years without AV, you cannot say that you never had a virus, if you never had an AV! How you think you can detect viruses? Some of them are silent.. you won't ever know that your pc is infected.

I find a firewall to be more important than AV as far as the defenses that actually provide used protection. That said, you have to realize that I am very careful about what I install on my computer. I don't just open email attachments. I don't click every link I receive, etc. As a result, AV is made almost unnecessary by good browsing habits and my firewall. I also work actively to prevent people from getting my contact information, so I don't get much spam.

But yes Antivirus programs are necessary unles you use linux. Or bsd. Or solaris. Or AIX. Or, I dunno, ANY unix-based OS? Viruses can only infect you if your OS has no proper permissions system, and if your OS allows an external source to execute arbitrary cod with system priviliges. Because of the way unix is built, only the user can execute code, and only the user can decide what permissions to give the code. Under unix, antivirus programs are pretty much irrelevant.
but just on the safe side i creat Antivirus for linux aswell!

all in all anything that connects to the internet weather it be phone,computer,X-box they can all be given a virus so fire walls and A.V.
should be a must included for linux and so on!!..

Some User might find this by a simpler way of thought. ^_^

Various Computer tech supporters like Doctormo on deviantART has better informed me that no Uxie and or general Linux has ever had any "Technical" needs for any AV, now any provided by Chronical themselves, with him saying that there is not yet a real virus that has been made for Linux. Only thing to make the computer act like it might have any is if it is the tower itself.

While People Like Crash on PCHelpForums, has informed me about a year ago that there are only 3 viruses for Linux, while friends has told my Linux has been around longer than Windows, yet cannot be harmed by that many problems that are pointed out as "viruses" on Windows.

If you guys would like my thoughts on making sure you don't get a virus, for people paranoid like me.

*With your browser set it to not accepting cookies, after that you can permit individual sites to temporarily store cookies. (Cookies are things that a website has your browser download to your computer temporarily to make a site more easier and convenient to use, but going to an untrusted site allowing it to store cookies, might be more than a risky idea.)

*Do not accept 3rd party cookies. (3rd party cookies belongs to sites that are often not a part of your commonly trusted site, while your security and browser may or may not warn you about the 3rd party cookies that are stored on your computer)

*Casually delete your old, unused, files, packages, and personally downloaded stuff you have and no longer use, because the more stuff you have in a computer the slower your computer gets and acts like it might have a virus. (Also more stuff you have in your computer makes it easier to hide an active virus, ant make it take longer to find it and so on.)

*A Quick reminder that when you add a web page to your favorites, and or bookmarks(Depends on what your browser calls it) the browser will download a copy that is almost unneeded, and almost useless to your computer. (If you are using the general Linux Ubuntu all I can say is go to Places >> Home Folder >> Hit "Ctrl H" >> .Mozilla(If you are using default browser) >> firefox >> t41goabn.default >> bookmarkbackups. That is where you go. You can safely put the documents found inside "bookmarkbackups" into your trash-bin and delete them. It is safe and won't affect/harm your browser, I do this all the time when I am cleaning out my computer.)
