Do you use banishing rituals in your daily activities?
Yes, but only to get rid of "Astral Nasties"
I do so when I begin a ritual and upon ending it.
No, I do not see the point to one.
No, but only because I have never tried.
I use one everyday as a visualization exercise.
  I haven't found one that I like.

ANGUS'S BANISHING RITUAL

Here it is as I wrote it down originally:

0. Bow yer heed and hold yer wind. When ye almost pass oot, let th' wind oot and shoot th' light doown! Extend ta either side.
1. Invoke th' wind an' sing th' vowels. Oop an' doown an' imagine th' power orbs. Thrice ye shall do eet.
2. Entend yer hand an' paint th' star. Singa th' vowels againa. Do this againa an' againa an' againa.
3. Cover yo fache because noone wanna see dat, mmm mmm. Singa da "Eeeeaaahhhhmmm"
4. Fill yo boday wit' th' light! Watch as it compacts isself.
5. Scream "BEGONE!" at th' evils!
6. Dance in backwards circles to catch th' ashes from th' 'slpostion

It helps me laugh. So here it is in a more comprehensible form:

0. Bow your head forward and take a deep breath. Hold it. Hold the breath until you feel you are about to pass out and then let it all out in a great woosh. See a beam of light strike through your body down to your feet and through to endlessness. Extend this light in two beams out to either side and into the infinite beyond.

1. Breath deep again and then intone "IEAOU". Visualize bright orbs of light appearing and glowing in the head (I) the throat (E) the heart (A) the stomach (O) and finally the genitals (U). Do this coming back up reversing the intonation "UOAEI". Do this three times or until you are satisfied.

2. Extend your right hand in front of you and trace a banishing pentagram whilst intoning the five vowels starting with I. Turn to your left and repeat. Do this twice more until you are at the point where you started.

3. Cover your face with your hands and begin to rock back and forth. Intone "I AM" as many times as you see fit.

4. While you are doing this you should visualize energy coming into you and concentrating in the area of your stomach. Just pull and pull into that small space. We are going to make it explode outward.

5. When the time is right (and for some reason I have never done this voluntarily) swing your arms out violently and yell to the high heavens "BEGONE!" clearly and forcefully. Do it as if you are commanding something. This will cause your mind to go blank if you have done it correctly, which is exactly what we are looking for. The energy that you compacted will have exploded outward with the force of a small bomb and I have always gone blind for just a moment before reality swirls in again.

6. Spin around counterclockwise and try and catch the ashes on your tongue. Laugh at yourself for the silliness of your actions because any onlooker would have been completely confused.

AN ANALYSIS

Step 0. Holding one's breath until the point that you pass out is a great way to get into an altered state. Some may say that this is dangerous and it is. I believe that any attempt at trying to get into an altered state is dangerous. I am going to have to make an experiment of letting the air out slowly instead of in one great woosh to see if that changes anything.

The beam of light and the white cross is prevalent in many different banishing rituals. Some have words that go with it, such as the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. I have no words to go with mind, only a visualization and a feeling of contentment. The cross is meant to cleanse the spirit completely for the work at hand.

Step 1. The five points that I have here are power points that I feel when I vibrate these five vowels. They are not precisely where I have noted them, they appear in my head as to where they are suppose to be. For example: The O intonation goes inside me rather than floating before it like in the throat point. They are indeed reminiscent of the chakras save that one is missing. The point of this step is to attune the body to the working at hand.

Step 2. Now we get to the heart of the working. In many banishing rituals that I have come across a shape is traced in the air and protected onto a wall or space in the mind. I project my pentagrams onto a space in my mind and onto a space in the air, or on a wall if I am working inside. The pentagram, to me, has always been a symbol of power. When using the banishing pentagram one is banishing the powers around them that are negative. This cleanses the space around you.

Step 3. The point of covering the face is to disorient yourself. I did it on a spring of intuition. The swaying brings one further into an altered state of consciousness (I have found). One intones "I AM!" so as to not forget who you are in all this. There is the possibility of losing yourself completely and banishing yourself, which would be very bad indeed.

Step 4. The energy is being drawn from within yourself and from the ground and the air. Everything is coming in toward you. I have visualized it as a wispy white substance that compacts into a small ball within me just below my heart.

Step 5. I have never consciously made this step happen. It has always happened for me involuntarily. My hands fly outward and I yell "BEGONE!" in a commanding voice that carries into the infinite space around me. The energy inside me explodes outward with the force of a small bomb, filling me with light and banishing any entities around me that might want to creep in and disrupt me. I become extremely light headed and giddy after this and I have no idea where I am for a moment until the universe collects around me again. My mind, for a moment, goes completely blank.

6. Laugh. Laughing is the best form of gnosticism, it is precisely what we need here. Laugh until your sides burst because you are so silly in what you have just done. Any normal person would think that you are insane, and maybe you are. I like to spin around like a small child and catch at the little pieces of awareness that now float around me.

I have a shortened version of this of course. Merely one traces a banishing pentagram and then focusing on that vibrate "I AM!" and then one can or can not shout "BEGONE!" it is completely up to the magician. I do the shortened version for sealing my doors and windows and such.

A NOTE ON INTONING

This is how I learned to intone. It is a difficult thing to master, but one can get the gist of it quickly. All I can say is practice, practice, practice! Start with the vowels UOAEI.

Ready? Here we go. What I want you to do is start with U as in ooo. Make your mouth nice and round and it helps if you put your finger in your mouth to get what I trying to describe. Now place it high and sing this out. Do not use vibrato if you can help it. What you are trying to find is a note that creates a fifth above it and a fifth below it as well. Listen carefully and don't sing too loudly. Play with your tongue, play with how nasal you get (I find this helps for me) play with where you are placing the vowel.

Now, transition the U carefully into O. This should be OH. Do the same thing and if you need to take another breath by all means do so. Raise your eyebrows, if you need to go higher. I have found that if I close my eyes I can hear the fifths better.

Now transition into A. This is not a drawn out AAAEEEEE it should be Awe. Make it nice and tall. Here is where you really need to start playing with your tongue. Still strive for that one note that vibrates the fifths.

Now what my teacher told me to do was make a wuh sound. OUA. Just try that a couple times slowly. Try not to transition too quickly, we want to hear all those vowels and the overtones that they create. And when you are doing A try not to go quickly into E, which is difficult.

The E should sound like Eh or AEEE. Transition slowly, the further you go in the vowels the harder it is going to be to keep on the vowel in question. The transition into I. This should be a drawn out EEEEEE sound. Now the amazing thing about this EEE is that you can start to hear the U again and you can repeat this for minutes on end. Just remember to breath. If you can circular breath (I can not, I will have to learn though) then power to you.

Just remember to hear the fifths and practice every day. If you listen carefully it will sound as if you are going up in the pitch as you go through the vowels. This is an illusion. You should still be able to hear the main pitch that you started with if you listen carefully.

Intoning is used by a lot of ceremonial magicians when intoning the names of gods or entities or angels. This is what is used when monks chant their mantras, save for the fact that they do it a bit lower than what I am suggesting here. You can do it lower as well, but that takes a lot of time. One can hear the fifths a lot easier when one is intoning starting at a higher pitch. I am not sure why this is, that is what my teacher taught me. You can certainly practice lower if you want, but know that this can ruin your vocal cords if you are not careful.
