The Enemies [Upon reaching the outskirts of the Academy, you are suddenly assaulted by the thick stench of monsters. There are none around, but based on the charred landscape and tousled earth, there have been multiple battles here very, very recently.
Phoebe perches up on a rock, amazingly able to remain standing despite her bumbling walk. Looking around herself for a moment, she then turns to you.] Phoebe: Well, I wish we had more information on the monsters, but there isn't anything right now. All the students that have had their familiars stripped from them have fallen into shock, and can't tell the teachers anything. So as a result, we have no idea what we're up against. The good thing is though, is that there are three Cardmasters that prove the most threat, and can summon the most monsters at once. We get rid of them, the entire group falls back and vanishes into the forest. We'll need to defeat them first, otherwise they'll just keep coming back. [She hands you written descriptions of the three Cardmasters the professors had seen.] Their appearance and general demeanor were sketched by eyewitnesses before we arrived. Bosses Name: Moxley Age: 10-13 Height: 4'4'' Demeanor: Curious, impatient, and always slightly agitated over the littlest of things. He is the smallest of the three. Battle Strategy: Unknown

Name: Rush Age: 17-24 Height: 5'8'' Demeanor: Rather introverted, she is seen saying very little, and she is always seen looking off into the distance. She has also been spotting fighting alongside her monsters with an unknown weapon. Battle Strategy: Unknown, but the eyewitnesses suggest that collaboration with her creatures is a key asset to her tactics.

Name: Shiirey Age: 20-28 Height: 6'3'' Demeanor: He is also very quiet, but he seems to be quicker to action than the other two, and faster to strike with harsher, crueler force. He is also, based on reports, blind. Battle Strategy: Unknown Phoebe: So, you know our targets. Any monster you defeat will have a spot in the Monster Manual after you defeat it. So. Shall we begin? Quest: Battle of the Elites - START

I've been fading away
I've been waiting on the call to reach my veins
Ready or not
No attention to waste
Every sorrow of the soul will read my name
When I cease to exist
Zedraz could almost be heard before anyone could have seen him coming.
He was crying, not because of something he had heard, but because of the battlefield.
"All these people...and how many were saved?" He wailed as he approached the rock which Phoebe stood precariously on.
He bowed his head to Phoebe before walking quickly out to the field and placing the cross upon his back into the mud, kneeling down and singing, his silken voice drifting through the air.
"I remember the way You looked at me, And the way You drew, Drew me close, With one deep sigh, Scattering pieces of my restless mind, Forgetting all that we have left behind."
Zedraz paused a moment before continuing.
"These tattered souls that float away, Save their souls, Draw them close, With Your deep sigh, Take their pieces, make them whole, Please oh please, save their souls."
Zedraz sat for a moment with his head down, then rose and picked up his cross, wiping his eyes once more before returning to Phoebe.

Hey, you. Yeah, you. What are you looking at? In contrast to Zedraz's dramatic entrance, Corsik's silent appearance nearly went unnoticed. He could be quiet when he felt the need, and although he rarely did, at the moment he felt mildly ill. The heavy scent on the air was rather nauseating. The only hint he had noticed either Phoebe's surprising ability to remain standing or Zedraz's theatrics came in the slightest rolling of his eyes. Ridiculous. Honestly. What did it matter if they were 'saved' or not? That guy didn't look like a Priest, anyway. Or smell like one either. Idly, he crossed to the rock that Phoebe stood on. He quickly categorized her in his mind as entirely useless. More than likely someone was going to have to be detached to protect her. Damn it. The Priest-who-wasn't-a-priest - Corsik had not yet categorized the other male's scent, so he wasn't quite sure what the guy was - didn't seem like the warrior type, if his previous behaviour was any indication and not just a sham. Someone else had better show up, and they had better be warriors, damn it. Corsik had not signed up for this thinking he was going to do it all himself. If no one else came, he was gone. There were...things he had yet to do, and dying here wouldn't get them done. Watch yourself… …I bite. And tell me, did you fall for a shooting star? One without a permanent scar...
"Can you imagine no first dance-"
And then you missed me, while you were looking for yourself out there? Can you imagine no love, pride? But tell me, did you sail across the sun? (Fall for a shooting star?)______ Did you make it to the Milky Way...
In a way, Corsik's concern was rectified... kind of. Without any pretense of stealth, nor a pretext of excitement, a woman clad in a strange, reflective armor approached on foot. Her skin was luxuriously white, tinted the slightest shade of midnight blue, while her hair was almost an almost luminescent shade of dark blue in turn. Her lips were the coldest color of all--nearly black in the intensity of their obvious color. Her eyes, though... her eyes were gray, or perhaps a dull silver. The reflective armor was worn minimally; underneath the few plates she wore a flowing black robe, presumably of silk by its look. Her features were sharp and her lips small. Her ears, although hidden by hair, were slightly pointed atop.
She walked with a leisurely, although not conceited gait. Her posture was straight and she normally kept her hands at her side, never fiddling. Any who touched her would find that she was incredibly chilled, and her presence emitted an aura of--something. Not superiority, but... that of something akin to a higher being. This was normal for most dragons, especially the wickedly cold variety. She also seemed apathetic to her surroundings, uncaring and unmoved by the scenes of battle and violence. Her eyes took in Zedraz and Corsik both, before settling on Phoebe.
She said nothing. Her presence would not go unnoticed, and that was all that mattered.
On the way here, Nex had wondered to herself why she'd taken this quest. It wasn't as if a couple of errant Cardmasters posed any threat, old or new, to her. She reflected upon the fact that gold had its own allure, even if minimally. The fighting might be nice--the impression was that these cardmasters were powerful.
Eh.
They would see how difficult this would be, especially to one of Nex Gel-Ocula's lineage and power. She was an ice dragon, though considered loosely a traitor, for various things she'd done in her past. It was true, she had been there at the death of a few fellow dragons. It wasn't anything that she regretted, however. Every experience was equal, including murder.
... Digressing.
Nex would provide more than adequately in a warrior's place. She was a massive creature, whose very body was one of the most deadly weapons in the world. Magic was not her strong suit, but the ice immediately surrounding her could be manipulated easily enough. Her strength, immense, while her lithe body was also capable of quick movements. In all, a fine body for fighting, which was what she counted on.
to see the lights all faded, __(And then you missed me...?) and that heaven is overrated? Was it everything you wanted to find? And, did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day?
"-freeze dried romance?"
And did you fall for a shooting star? And now you're lonely looking for yourself out there....

They love me. They hate me. They say what they want about me. Shortly after Nex arrived, there was a low growl from the area behind them. Despite such a threatening noise, there was no sound or attempt to attack. A Chimera, its snake-tail lashing and its wings folded tightly against its back, was sniffing at the air - with, it seemed, all three heads. Against the monster, the young blonde looked out of place. But her voice was cool and in control as she spoke up. "Kirali, hush." A pause. "Yes, I know it stinks. Hush." And the creature quieted, following along behind as docilely as a lamb. The woman strode up to join them, looking irritated and disappointed. Madeline had been following a rumour when she'd stumbled into this. Once she'd heard that Cardmasters were behind the attacks on the Elementalists, she'd been quite disgusted. That her own subfaction was stooping so low as to steal from children...well, she had to take a part in rectifying that. And the fact that she had a more important quest (to her, at least) never deterred her. Kirali kept reminding her that she was never going to find her brother at this rate, but Maddy shrugged it off. She'd find him eventually. She had all the time in the world. She looked over the group. Her eyes lingered for a few minutes on Zedraz, distrustfully - something about him seemed a little off - before sweeping over Corsik and Nex. She didn't even bother to glance at Phoebe. Well. Was this everyone? If so, she and Kirali might be in for a little more work than she had thought. She touched the little purse hanging on her hip affectionately. But they were up to it. But trust me, no one ignores me. Not anymore. Madeline Letrayal Cardmaster

Send out the morning birds xxxxxxxxto sing of xxxxxxxxxxxthe Damage Phi Chanthou xxxxxxxxxxxNow that the calm's returned xxxxxxxxI know I can't Manage Phi was understandably a bit nervous. This was her first big quest. She'd chosen it not for the difficulty level, or for the reward, but because of a rumor she had heard. Apparantly there was a kid her age involved in this. A kid who was on the side of 'evil' as she would call it for now. Really, to her, this entire set-up seemed suspicous. Three Cardmasters run in, attack like crazy, steal familiars, and then stick around to wreak more havoc and possibly get caught and killed? It didn't sound right. There was something behind this, she was sure of it. She wondered if the idea had crossed through anyone else's head. If not, then she would be quite ashamed. Everyone here was older, at least for their species-wise, than her by quite a few years. She was only a child, after all. The thought made her nervous again. What if they didn't believe in her? She was a prodigy! Able to fight just as well as any full-grown Tangu, sometimes even better. She knew that, even if the others didn't. Ah well. She suppised that they'd have to trust her. It wasn't as though she gave off the air of some stupid, reckless teenager. There were people like that. Phi wasn't very fond of them. They tended to annoy her, especially the ones who weren't teenagers anymore. They were just super-annoying adults.
The air was thick. Everyone seemed to be at least slightly bothered by it. It really only succeeded in making Phi's nose crinkle though. She'd never had a good sense of smell. She supposed that it wasn't that important though. There were only a few special circumstances in which she felt that it'd be important, and what were the chances of those things happening? Slim and none, she figured. So she didn't worry about it, just like she didn't worry about the smell. It was gross, sure, and she'd have to air out her clothes later, but otherwise...why let it bother her? She had expected for there to be a smell, what with all of the monsters running around. If there hadn't been one, then she would have been shocked.
Really, the only thing she was shocked about was the state of their guide. She'd said earlier that she wasn't drunk, but Phi had a difficult time believing her. As she looked at her, really, she couldn't be labeled as 'sober'. At least, not in Phi's opinion. Maybe Phoebe had a differen't definition of drunk than her. Maybe this was her idea of buzzed, or tipsy. That, or she was just crazy. Hmm, the first one seemed more likely to Phi. Ah, well! She supposed that Phoebe might have just been one of those annoying adults that she had been thinking about earlier. Anyone who could hardly stand while being the guide for a quest certaintly seemed irresponsible and reckless, even if they were being helpful to the Elementalists.
Poor things. Phi genuinly pitied them. She couldn't imagine having a best friend and life partner taken away, nevermind someone who helped them with their natural powers. Really, she was quite curious to the state of those who had had their Familiars taken away from them. They were probably still in shock. Phi knew that she would be, if she was in their shoes. It was hard to imagine that though. The closest feeling she could manage to feel was if she thought about losing the wings. Maybe the feeling was something like that. A mix of dread and anger and sadness and the thought of, 'What can I possibly do now?' Of course, if she lost her wings, there was always the chance that her mother would give up on her becoming the leader of the clan...Hah. Yeah right. Nothing short of Belphe having a change of heart and becoming the clan leader would change that.
Hmm, well, it seemed, as she looked out, that the only thing left to now was to wait. Yippee.

I cannot make it without you
All my efforts have failed
So that I will cry out in the need of you
Restore the strength of my dependence
Send me through the fire
Make me pure again
Everything I am
I give it all to you
Zedraz inclined his head when the newcomers arrived, making sure to be as polite as possible.
There was something quite...different about them, but it wasn't something he was meant to impose upon, unless of course he so felt guided to do so.
He gave a quick prayer before turning towards Phoebe and inclining his head, asking, "I would like to inquire when exactly our mission will begin."
His silken tone drifted once more across the landscape, though hopefully it would not attract any, unwanted attention. He so hoped to avoid unneeded bloodshed.

Phoebe looked almost incapacitated. She was surely not at her peak condition right now. Had the girl been fighting already, and then some? Nex raised her head, to allow the scents of the forest to drift into her. She closed her eyes and resisted the urge to cry.
These scents were not like home. If asked to discern the difference, she would probably answer, after some hesitation, that the scent of the cold reminded her of home. Memories, she would never say aloud, are precious, precious things; they're your experience. Without your memories, you lose who you are. By the time you find them again, you'd be surprised at just how different you've then become.
The stench of this battle-torn wilderness was familiar in a way, but for the most part it was a hostile environ. It brought to the surface certain memories... and Ararne. That was unneeded.
The stillness of the quiet around them declared a message as blatant as any explanation. The animals had moved on; such, during times of conflict and danger, is their nature. For those of elevated hearing capacity, the silence becomes almost surreal. How long would it be until some raucous-inducing foe came stumbling through the modicum of peace?
"Phoebe." Nex was now looking up at the teetering Gryphon. Her tone implied concern. "Can you fight?" Was that the scent of alcohol she could detect?

Hey, you. Yeah, you. What are you looking at? Corsik fought the urge to point out what, to him, was obvious. Of course, he was standing much closer to Phoebe, and just downwind - the scent of alcohol was much stronger for him. He wondered if the woman (if she was a woman) was just trying to give Phoebe the benefit of the doubt. He most sincerely hoped not. That would not be a good idea. It was already evident to him that Phoebe herself was not going to be too much help. Possibly even more of a hindrance. Why could they not have had a more capable guide? Corsik wondered idly why he had even signed up for this quest. Oh yes, that was right. He'd had hopes that maybe, just maybe... But no. Had she heard about it, she'd be here by now, all fired up and ready to rend the Cardmasters in question to pieces for behaving like such idiots. So he was wasting his time again. Well, he was in it now. He could resume the trail later. Watch yourself… …I bite. Your dreams are MORE than worth ĐĘFĖŊĐĮŊĢ. {You need to let go...}Phoebe blinked. If she knew Nex was a dragon, it probably wouldn't have made a difference.
"Um..." she stammered, swaying a little. She swallowed, cleared her throat. "Well, no," she admitted. "I'm actually kind of a pacifi-"
"Of course she can't fight!"
The tone was snappish and impeccably rude. From a burst of blue flame a woman appeared nearby - black, unruly hair flowing over powerful shoulders. The eyes were sharp and alert, tinted with just a bit of cruelty. The woman looked more like a pirate - with her off-shoulder white blouse, black half-corset, and red-and-black striped stockings beneath a black, knee-high ruffled skirt paired with black boots equipped with an almost-stiletto heels. A wide belt with a bright gold buckle wrapped around her wide hips completed the ensemble.
But that blue fire was surely not of the pirate variety.
She strode into the flanks of the group, her gaze sweeping the rest of the group and several tattoos visible along her skin. Then her gaze went - almost piercingly - to Phoebe, who seemed unmindful of the danger.
"Who are you?!" The newcomer demanded. "What on EARTH do you think you're doing leading a QUEST? Has Barro lost his MIND?"
Phoebe swallowed again.
"I'm Phoebe Phantasma," she stammered, her legs quivering a little beneath her - whether it was from fear or from an effort to remain standing was unknown. "I was placed as guide for this mission because I have a friend who goes to this school that-"
"You're a drunken idiot who can't even tell up from down," the woman snapped - almost business-like in her cruelty. "You're a ******** weakling - what the ******** do you think you're doing here?" Snorting, she dismissed Phoebe, turning away with her tone simple and matter-of-factly. "Get lost. You fail at life."
Setting her hands on her hips, she turned to the others, and spoke loudly.
"Forget the idiot," she called, almost sneering. "I am Elaina Moonsword, and I am your new guide."A NEW BEING APPEARS!

Elaina MoonswordPhoebe bit her lip.
"B-but..." she stammered. "I'm... I'M the guide..."
"Not anymore, little girl," Elaina sneered. "Go ******** a drunk or something. You're worthless here."
Phoebe tried to get off the rock, slipped, and hit the ground hard. Her face screwed up in probably more humiliation than pain, and thus she curled up into a ball and began to cry.
"Was there really such a need to be so cruel, Elaina?"
A teenage boy in a rather dashing-looking suit and top-hat also appeared, having flown in on the back of a rather large and busty harpy, who settled on an arm of a massive cactus nearby and folded up her wings, unmindful of the needles.
Needling down next to Phoebe, he patted her head.
"There there, Phoebe." He handed her a handkerchief as she raised her head to look at him. "Are you all right, my lady?"
Her eyes widened, and she threw her arms around him.
"Mimzy!"
Elaina burst into laughter.
"Oh yes, 'Mimzy'!" She mocked as the boy awkwardly returned the hug, too polite to pull away. "What a lovely name you have! I was almost worried for a moment! Ha!" She slapped her knee. "Oh, you're hilarious little boy. Absolutely hilarious."
The boy helped Phoebe up after she reluctantly released him and sent a mildly exasperated look at Elaina.
"Miss Elaina, please."
"Don't 'Miss Elaina' me," the other woman replied, hands on her hips. "Don't try that sass with me!"
He rolled his eyes, and Elaina turned to the rest of the group with a smirk.
"This is Mimzy," she mocked, making him scowl. "He's Phoebe's boytoy."
"Heh, incorrect Elaina, but thank you for trying," he replied lightly, staying polite despite the rudeness. He turned to the others and tipped his hat to them. "Greetings. I am Mikeal."A NEW BEING APPEARS!

They love me. They hate me. They say what they want about me. Madeline was kind of horrified – and, in a small, awful way, mildly amused – by the arrival of the new girl. That came…completely out of nowhere, she decided. Maybe it made her a terrible person, but she was almost relieved by the fact that someone who seemed to have the slightest idea of what they were doing had joined them. However, when the blonde boy arrived, Maddy’s eyes narrowed on him. He seemed…she thought she recognized him, somehow. Kirali’s heads had lifted again, sniffing the air as she marked the newcomers down in her mind. And suddenly, all three sets of ears almost seemed to perk, like a dog’s. ”Madeline! Maddy, that’s--!”Madeline turned to Kirali, surprised and confused. “What? What?” She hadn’t heard the Chimera so excited since the last time she nearly set the house on fire. Upon her interruption, though, Kirali almost seemed to wilt. The Chimera eventually shook her lion’s head, snake-tail swishing again. “Never mind. Must have been my mistake, I guess. Thought he smelled familiar.”Maddy turned her head back, only to hear “…It is a pleasure to meet all of you.” Dammit! Missed the name. And she was sure she knew him. She was positive she did, in fact. The name was just there, right on the tip of her tongue…but she couldn’t pull it out of the depths of her brain. She’d always hated that. Why, why, why could she only remember the meaningless trivia? Hell. This was going to be frustrating. But trust me, no one ignores me. Not anymore. Madeline Letrayal Cardmaster ~ Hey, you. Yeah, you. What are you looking at? Corsik’s nearly bored gaze snapped back when the dark-haired woman appeared. He recognized the blue flames, and for a moment he almost seemed to light up. Evana. It’s Evana. She— “Evana?” he muttered, so softly it was unlikely that anyone would hear him. His eyes were locked on the newcomer, and he took a hesitant step forward, like he thought she would disappear if he went too fast. As soon as she started speaking, though, the hope faded. Evana, sharp as she could be at times, would never have just torn into Phoebe from out of nowhere like that, pathetic though Corsik agreed the woman was. She would at least have waited for a reason. Most of the time. Although she might have changed – it had, after all, been over a century – somehow Corsik didn’t think that she would have changed quite that much. And then she introduced herself, and just like that it rekindled. Moonsword. The wrong first name, sure, but the right last name. More to the point, now that he was getting a better look at…Elaina?...he could appreciate why he’d so immediately thought of Evana. She had the right face. They looked remarkably similar. So similar, in fact, they could have been twins. Hadn’t Evana said something about a sister? Watch yourself… …I bite. Nex watched the proceedings in silence. After the boy, Mikeal--after he came and introduced himself, she turned her eyes on this Elaina with narrowed distaste. It took a type of person to be so utterly cruel, without apparent reason. Nex knew--in her most probably longer lifespan--quite a few capable fighters that excelled at drunken carnage. A few of them fought better when inebriated.
But this woman was obviously acquainted with the girl, Phoebe. She likely knew the gryphon's strengths and capabilities, and her limits. Still, Nex felt perfectly content to completely turn her back on Elaina without a word, and step softly until she stood before Phoebe and Mikeal.
"If the situation is grave enough, you may be forced to fight anyway. I know from experience that your kind are formidable opponents." Her eyes wandered, taking in Mikeal's appearance. She seemed to sum him up and categorize his potential and apparent limits, only to then file the information away to likely never be used again, quite neatly. Her hope had been that he would be a fighter, but it did not seem so. He was only human, after all.
Nex could not know of Phoebe's inherent lifestyle, nor of her tendency to disregard her race. And it may have seemed like the dragon was being kind; in truth, she was simply more intelligent than Elaina apparently was, because this was absolutely necessary.

And did you fall for a shooting star? And now you're lonely looking for yourself out there....

Phoebe shifted, pressing close to Mikeal and making him wince in mild discomfort, but he didn't have the heart to push her away.
"I'm a... a pacifist..." she mumbled into his suit. "I'm... I'm not a fighter. I just... I just knew where this place was."
Elaina rolled her eyes a second time. Of course she was. That was just to save herself from explaining what a waste of time and life she was. Whatever.
The phoenix knew how pathetic the Gryphon really was. And the woman - whatever she was - would find out eventually too.
"Master."
Mikeal looked to the harpy perched on the cactus.
"Ara?" He replied. She blinked at him.
"There are many monsters around this area, many of them are in the castle walls, but there are several in this general facility," she informed him. "Shall I scout the area?"
Mikeal blinked, thinking. Mildly, he wished Akoro was there. The demon-hound was usually paired with Ara when they went scouting - one by land and one by ground - but Ara was alone this time. She relied heavily on Akoro, so he wondered if she'd be able to handle herself.
"All right," he replied finally. "You may. Just be careful."
Ara nodded and leaped off the cactus, flapping mightily up into the air and sailing off.
