Basic Training (reference)

It was the middle of the day out in the wasteland. The sun was bright and shone overhead as a Brotherhood of Steel soldier went down into the ground for her final bout of training. A bunker was set aside for this one last obstacle course before the plunge, when this fine soldier was to be sent out to earn her name in the field. She was issued down a long corridor into the dim illumination, ending up in a small room with a metal door. In front of that door was her tester.

Her instructor-to-be was not the tallest, or strongest man, but he was respected enough to mold her flabby flesh into durable steel. He stood there in the armor of a Knight, a suit of combat armor that had been modified to provide better protection, stained in a dark gray. The Knight's helmet was off, golden hair cascaded from his head like straw. His eyes were also golden, like a cat.

"I am Knight Azure and you are in my charge until you have completed my course."

Azure's relatively calm voice echoed throughout the corridor.

"Since I haven't had the chance to read your files, perhaps you would be so kind as to introduce yourself..."

Objective 1: Character Introduction.

Please introduce your character in a post (minimum one paragraph). In your introduction, please describe any physical traits or mental quirks that your character has, the equipment they wear/use, and anything else you believe should be known about your character. The more descriptive you are, the easier it is for you and others to understand and visualize your character.

She walked carefully down the hall, outfitted in leather armor that was rather obviously different from the average armor, being that it was green and scaly. She seemed very nervous, not sweating, but her hands were a little shaky. One can tell her skin is normally tan, but she's a little pale at the moment because of her nerves. A strange-shaped knife is strapped to her leg, it's almost as long as her thigh, and her hand fidgets at the handle, not as if to draw it, but to take comfort from its presence. On her hips are holstered twin 9mm Berettas, one might find it odd that her hand is on the knife and not the guns. Her AK-47 is strapped tightly to her back by a strap across her chest, and it moves amongst her long dark hair because of her deep breaths as she tries to relax herself.

Her footsteps are very quiet, somewhat obviously so, especially with her hesitance, and one can see it's because she's wearing shoes made of the same material as her armor. How strange. She takes one last very deep breath as she comes to a stop in front of her instructor.

"Good day, sir. I am Ryela Camillor. I am new here, an Initiate I believe?" her voice is full of hesitance "Anyway, I came from Vault 904 a number of years ago and have travelled a long way with the intent to experience the world, and I look forward to my experience with the esteemed establishment of the Brotherhood of Steel. If you'll keep me, of course." She smiles nervously.

"We'll 'keep' you for as long as you can fight."

The instructor stated bluntly before he turned and went up to the door. It opened with a loud creaking noise. He ushered the Brotherhood soldier down a short corridor and into another room. Some straw-stuffed, burlap sack dummies stood around on metal poles. One such dummy stood off to the right, three more stood across the room, where a white firing-line was drawn on the ground several meters from them. Weapon lockers and ammo boxes lined the sides of the room where the dummies weren't.

"Let's see what you can do against these dummies."

Knight Azure said as he pointed to the lone dummy nearby.

Objective 2: Basic Combat.

Basic Combat is divided into three sections: unarmed/melee combat, firearms, and throwing (usually grenades).

1) Unarmed/Melee Combat.

In another post (minimum three sentences), approach the straw dummy provided, and strike it with either unarmed attacks or a melee weapon (you may use any Initiate ranked unarmed or melee weapon of your choice).
PostPosted: Wed Jan 27, 2010 10:41 pm

Ryela steps toward the dummy that her instructor has indicated, and stops about a step out of arm's length, facing the dummy.

She asks over her shoulder, patting her knife on her right thigh "I hope you don't mind if I use my own weapon in this case? It's what I'm most familiar with."

She turns back to the dummy and takes a deep breath. She draws the knife slowly, then brings it up quickly as she steps forward to cut once diagonally down from what would be the dummy's left shoulder, once across its midsection, then pulling back and stabbing her black blade straight into the center of her second cut.

She steps back, and turns to her instructor, the knife held lax at her side but not replaced in its sheath on her thigh. "Will that be sufficient, sir?" She seems to have lost the tremble in her hands, for the moment.

"That will be sufficient for now."

Azure said before he motioned with his hand to bring the recruit over to the firing line. A table sat off to the side with an assortment of smallarms. Pistols to hunting rifles adorned the surface of the table.

"Now let's see how you handle a firearm."

azureink
Objective 2: Basic Combat.

2) Firearms.

In your next post (minimum three sentences), approach the firing line, and take aim at any of the three straw dummies provided (you may use any Initiate ranked firearm of your choice; if you choose a basic firearm without the burst feature, you will need to requisition one that does have that feature for the second part of this training exercise). First, fire some single rounds into the dummy(ies) of your choice. After that, you will switch to burst-fire mode and mow down a dummy of your choice.

"Yes sir" said Ryela as she slipped her knife quietly and easily back into the sheath on her thigh.

She walked to the table of firearms, glancing over them. She selected a single 9mm Beretta like her own, hefted it in her left hand gently to be sure it was loaded, then walked to the firing line with a deliberate step. She flipped off the safety easily. With her left arm outstretched, she proceeded to fire at the far left dummy, aiming for the center of its presumed forehead. The chamber casing slid back, spitting out the shell, which fell between her feet. Her left index finger had pulled a little too much, causing the bullet to enter just above what would be the dummy's right ear. Perhaps still a fatal shot for most, but she frowned at her shot, obviously it wasn't what she had hoped for, and the shell towards her face didn't help. She only frowned for a moment before turning to grasp the Beretta with both hands, still using her left hand as the dominant hand. This time she aimed at the center dummy, in the same place as on the previous, and fired again. Once again she frowned momentarily at the hole just to the left of the center of the forehead of the dummy, and likely at the fact that she had forgotten that most guns shoot the shell toward the right. Finally, she turned to the right dummy and held the Beretta out in her right hand, the pistol seemed to kick more as she fired this time than either of those before, but with a hole bored through the center of the dummy's forehead, she appeared satisfied with her shot.

"I try to use both hands, in case one ever becomes incapacitated for any reason. My right hand will always be better though, I can't change the years behind that. I'm still terrible using both hands at once on something this small though, too many fingers in one place."

She put the safety on the Beretta as she walked to the table, and set it down carefully in its previous place. She carefully examined the other guns available. She selected the AK-47, like the one on her back. She picked it up, examining it, and it seemed to fit naturally into her hands, but she seemed more cautious with it than the Beretta. She walked to the firing line again, switching off the safety and set the AK to auto once she arrived. Ryela lifted the AK to the appropriate position, aiming at the center dummy. A look of slight disgust, at the waste of bullets this mode required, crept onto her face as she held down the trigger. The AK spit forth 5 shots, kicking back into her shoulder despite how stiffly she held it. Ryela released the trigger and observed the five holes clustered together in the chest of the dummy. Again, she turned on the safety of the weapon before carefully setting it back down on the table.

She looked toward her instructor from beside the table. "Is that enough of a display, sir? What's next?"

[Please add to the post how the gun and you react when it fires. Does it jump in your hand? Does it rumble when it sprays bullets? Does the barrel spark? Etc. Also, what happens to the dummy? How does it get chewed up by the bullets? Does they spew straw from their wounds? Etc.]

[Much better.]

"You seem hesitant. Perhaps with more practice you will feel more comfortable."

The Knight pointed to a box of grenades, then to the dying dummies.

"End this with a grenade."

azureink
Objective 2: Basic Combat.

3) Throwing.

In your third post (minimum three sentences) of the Basic Combat training, you will retrieve a grenade of your choice from the nearby ammo box, and throw it at one of the three straw dummies that inhabit the same area that you used your firearm(s) on. Describe the explosion.

"I'll try," said Ryela as she sifted through the box of grenades carefully, handling each one extremely gently. Finally, she selected one, holding it tightly but carefully as she walked to the firing line. She stood right in front of the center dummy, that she had previously opened up the chest of using the AK. She took a deep breath, squeezed the lever of the grenade, and pulled the pin out of it. She took one quick, but deliberate, breath before pitching it like a fastball at the torn chest of the center dummy.

Ryela ducked behind a nearby wall as soon as she released the grenade.

The grenade embedded itself in the chest of the dummy, and it and the dummy exploded, sending bits of flaming hay and burlap flying into the air, leaving a charred post in its wake. The other dummies smoldered and smoked a little from the falling embers, and were charred on the sides closest to the center dummy.

Azure nodded his head at the baseball pitch and the resulting explosion, ducking behind the weapon desk when the grenade went off. He stood up, dusting himself off, and motioned the soldier towards the door into the next room.

"You have done well so far. Now for the next test."

He led them into an even larger room than the first. This one was dotted with obstacles. Small hills, waist-high walls, oil drums... it looked like a miniature reenactment of the wasteland surrounding the Brotherhood compound.

"On the other side of this world is the exit. If you can reach it undetected, we'll know whether your sneaking skills are top notch. If you can't... well, you can't.

You have already passed most of the parts that matter, so this is more of a test to see if you can sneak. This is to notify us of another ability at our disposal. If you want to give up, or don't care to go through this last part, you can say so now, or later on. I myself never cared to much about stealth.

You can't see him from where we are, but there is another initiate on the other side of the room, his job is to find you when this starts.

Any questions?"

azureink
Objective 3: Stealth.

You are ushered into a large square room with many small barricades to hide behind (ranging from boulders to stacks of barrels and crates). You start on one side of the room and the instructor starts at the exit. The objective is for you to make it to the exit without the instructor catching you. The instructor has to hunt you down and can't wait at the exit. This objective will take the form of an rp with many posts (minimum three sentences each for both participants). The objective is completed whether or not you can make it to the exit. The objective is not failed if the instructor catches you... not everyone is born a ghost.

Ryela looks over the room and shrugs "I suppose I may as well try. Do I get any supplies to work with? And do I have a specific place to start from?"

[Also, can I get some sort of map to know what there is to hide behind, in, on, under, next to, or as? I don't want to expect there to be something similarly colored to my armor to blend in with, and there actually not be anything.]

[There is no map. We draw the map through our own descriptions. If you need a barrier of your colors, create it through rping.]

"You start from here."

Azure said, indicating where they were both standing.

"You also have on everything that is allowed."

The Knight replied, referring to the simple leather armor that the Initiate was wearing for training and relative lack of weapons. Though who knew how many tools she carried, or what she could do with her surroundings to make distractions or camouflage.

"However, a stealth mission in broad daylight would be suicidal."

At that very moment the entire room went pitch black as all the overhead lights were turned off. One light was left however, a search light that scanned slowly across the room at random intervals. Another thing that came to eye were several barrels that had fire coming out of them.

"Natural eyesight, helped and hindered by this single search light and flaming barrels, is your way through this course. Just as you might see out there in the wasteland. Any more questions?"

~

Initiate Fitz looked about for a moment as the lights went out. It was always difficult to become adapted to the darkness after being awash with light for so long. He blinked for a minute or so before heading out from the area that housed the exit to this challenge.

Fitz's hair was short, but a golden straw color that illuminated his head like a bulb, which made it difficult for him to sneak. In order to be effective in hiding, Fitz wrapped up his luminous hair in a black bandanna. Scruffs of yellow hair peeked out from underneath as he moved around.

He crouched up to a low wall made of stacked cinder blocks, just as the searchlight passed by, and peeked through the holes. While he was in shadows, a nearby barrel, only a few meters from him and up against what looked like the edge of a small cliff, glowed with soft light.

Both participants in this little duel started off quite some distance from each other. It was unknown who would emerge victorious.
