If you live in the U.S. then any grocery store carries free apartment guides

Abandoned building are nice, but you gotta be careful. I got lucky, and found an apartment building that was mostly finished being built. The constustion crew just up and left one day. I theorize that the company gave up on it. Considering the economy, your chances are goodish. Fun fact: squatting gets loney. I guess what I am saying is take a friend, or even a stranger. Talking to an a*****e beats talking to a wall.

Oh yeah! If you have options, choose the place nearest a soup kitchen. Can't beat a free hot meal.

yeah, I Know of more houses that are prime pickings for a nice squat than i can count on my fingers. I found this cool site SquatThePlanet.com. there are a couple squatters on there from my area. but i might just be pulling if off all by myself, making happy visits to friends for some hob nobbing and good times.

So why do you want to squat? As some kind of means to escape reality for a bit until you can sort s**t out? I don't think that a scuzzy ice cold endless vacation is really the answer, but best of luck to you.

1. ive wanted engage the survivalist inside since i was 10 falling in love witht he book My side of the mountain.

2. Im exploring the possibilites of alternative lifestyles. adapting the engineering i learned in school to build perhaps better living spaces and green energy for people with little to no money. and essentially i want to be able to create them in ways that anyone could do.

3. I love detroit more than i love anything else in the world. and i want to be in the thick of its suffering, in the thick of its hardship, and come out ok. and i know i can do this, ive spent 13 years of my life planning survival theory.

4. i hate HATE HATE commodity and im just sick of existing with it.

Its not a matter of punx points of thats what you infer.

hopefully ill still be able to work while im at it, keep some money on the side, and pay for water, and power since it is winter and none of my green energy machines are really working efficiently yet. and maybe even internet so i can keep in touch with my good friends.

No no, just implying there's definitely easier ways to get away from it all to sort your brain.

But your reasons sound pretty legit. Definitely best of luck to you.

yeah dude im really ******** excited about it, im jumping in my own skin right now waiting till i can find a decent place... not gonna be too hard... heading out to the west side and cass corridor soon.

i might just check into the housing department for the city and see their listings of abandoned or empty homes, and the conditions that they are in.

Old factories are a great place I would say. I've never squatted myself, but I would look for unoccupied spaces that look like they are secluded, safe, well insulated, with multiple points of entrance and exit.

Other finer points;
-Never come in and leave the same way more than you can manage it. Creates more opportunities for people spotting you, leading to attacks, theft, etc.
-When building a fire to keep you warm (I live in Ohio and it's cold as ******** down here) Keep it small and barricaded from the view outside. More chances for people to see you, ask what's going on, etc. Steel wool and a 9 volt battery will create a spark.
-Carry rope, a flashlight (preferably induction), and a hefty length of pipe with you. Escape/useful at all time, light (duh), and weapon.
-Have a source of fresh water at hand. You can strain water through a cloth, catch it and boil it to create fresh water.

When I think of more, I'll put it up.

the unfortunate situation right now is, i cant exactly find decent house.

I dont so much need seclusion exactly, especially if i can find a decent house that just got forclosed and evicted or something.im trying to find abandoned houses with the electricity and water pipes still in tact. there are a plethora of abandoned homes unfortunately most are stripped by scrappers of their pipes and wires. Copper prices are at an all time high.

anywho, yeah there are hundreds of vacant factories in this city most are run down to hell. but they are still fairly well secured. and thus well insulated and probably still have decent plumbing.

ultimately though im looking to find a group of crusties to squatt with before im all on my lonesome. learn the tricks of the trade and what not. SquatThePlanet.com forums only provide so much advice.

and if it really comes down to it i can make my own shelter, ive dont it before in the wilderness... and with garbage everywhere in all sorts of shapes and sizes making a wigwam might be easier than risking tresspassing violations

then again, the police can only arrest squatters for tresspassing if they have proof the squatter broke into the house inorder to get it.... if i find a house with an open window, i can meander in, unlock the front door, replace the lock and i have a secure house. and the only way to get evicted is if the landlord files several documents before the local housing commisson to have me evicted. police cant do s**t unless they catch me red handed.

i know a couple other methods of water collection too from survival training in the Boyscouts, Border Patrol explorers program, and just camping with hardcore back packers. also one thing that SquatThePlanet forums have tought me is how to get free food.

thanks chuck. much appreciated. ill probably be heading out some time this month, given i can locate some local kids with like minds.

Also, never read you live in Detroit. I just live over in Windsor, across the border! If you ever plan on coming over here for a concert or something mention it and I'll keep an eye out for ya, Jungle.
Can't think of any great places to squat over here but hell, in Detroit you should have endless opportunities of abandoned places.
