Okay what about other images the mother mary etc.
well first, here is a good book that explains on that very well -
http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=15375783the thing we need to understand about worship is that it is not, by definition, what we reserve for God alone, there are two types of worship, adoration, and veneration,
adoration is the worship reserved for God alone, and veneration is what we give to the angels and saints,
so although it seems like something given only to God by our current modern understanding, by definition it is not.
but to further understand exactly what worship we give to God, and what we give to the angels and saints, here is a definition of worship from Catholic Reference -
"Acknowledgment of another's worth, dignity, or superior position. In religion, worship is given either to God, and then it is adoration, or to the angels and saints, and it is called veneration. Divine worship actually includes three principal acts, namely adoration (or the recognition of God's infinite perfection), prayer or the asking for divine help, and sacrifice or the offering of something precious to God. Worship as veneration also has three principal forms, whereby the angels and saints are honored for their sanctity, asked to intercede before the divine Majesty, and imitated in their love and service of God."so after understanding exactly what worship is, then how we honor the angels and saints and communicate with them doesn't seem so bad, and infact is quite good and actually encouraged by God Himself, because by venerating the saints, we are actually giving glory and honor and love to God, because while we ask the angels and saints to pray for us, and when we honor them, we are really praying to and honoring God, who is the source of all goodness and creator of all things, and we are giving glory to Him by doing what He has created us to do, which is to communicate and interact with eachother and love eachother for the love of God,
it is by our God given nature that we interact with eachother the way we do, it is a good thing that we have had since the beginning, which we read from the bible - "And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good."
our relationships with eachother and how we interact and speak with eachother does not end when we go to heaven, God made us to be that way, and God Himself enjoys interacting with us, it doesn't stop at heaven, it only gets better.
so with that said(i know i'm making this long) when we have pictures or statues of the saints or angels or the Blesses Virgin, we do not worship those things(we never worship objects
ever), but by them we can give honor to the angels and saints, which God is pleased with, because He sees that it is by our love for them that we do it, and when we love them we are showing our love for God, who created them.
some reasons why we have pictures and statues in our churches and in our homes, is to keep our mind on God and on heavenly things when we are praying or reading or whatever else,
it's also good to have pictures of Mary, and the angels and saints, because they help us to remember and contemplate on their lives which were so completely given to God and were just a great example to us for how we should live our lives,
and because they were so great(by the grace of God) we do have a great deal of respect and honor for them, and just as we have statues and pictures everywhere of great war heroes and other important people in history, so also the catholic church has statues and pictures of those they conciser heroes in our religion and history,
although you will see in that book i gave you, that he says we do not worship Mary or the angels and saints, but as you will see if you read further, he is referring to the worship of adoration only, and not of veneration, and he does continue to say that we do venerate the saints, which as i said already, veneration by definition is also worship.
but because of our societies understanding of the word worship, i never tell people we worship the saints...not without a good explanation such as this anyways,
i usually just say "no, we venerate the saints" but since i have more time to explain it on here i can explain it this way.
as Catholics, we know how to pray and how to worship and what we should and shouldn't do, we know that if we were to worship an object, that that would be a mortal sin, and if we were to give adoration to a saint, that would also be a mortal sin,
and no one, atleast knowingly, gives honor to the angels and saints which they should give only to God,
and i don't think...atleast i can't imagine, that anyone can worship an object without knowing it,
well, i hope i didn't make that confusing...my brain is kinda fried right now so i'm not sure i made that very clear x,x
but either way, that book i listed should explain quite clearly on this subject as well.
